Savoring the Douro: A Day of Views, Vines, and Vintage

Today was a day dedicated to soaking in the majestic beauty and rich flavors of the Douro Valley. With my friends in tow, I set out to explore scenic viewpoints and indulge in the region's famed port wine. It was a day of sensory delights, from the panoramic vistas to the complex notes of aged wines, creating memories that I know will last a lifetime.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at A Companhia - Museu do Douro in Peso da Régua. The restaurant, nestled within the Douro Museum, offered a delightful start to the day with its regional Portuguese cuisine. I opted for a traditional *pastel de nata* and a strong *café* to fuel up for our adventures. Lena would have loved this place, she has a sweet tooth and always enjoys a good coffee. The atmosphere was artistic and inviting, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration.

With appetites satisfied, we drove to our first destination: Miradouro de Valença do Douro. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering glimpses of the terraced vineyards that define the Douro Valley. As we climbed higher, the anticipation grew. The Miradouro de Valença do Douro is situated at over 415 meters above sea level and it is known as one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the region. The viewpoint offered a breathtaking panorama of the Douro River snaking through the valley. The landscape was framed by rolling hills covered in vineyards, creating a picture-postcard scene. The local municipality recently placed two grape-bunch-shaped frames that serve as literal frames for the landscape, which I thought was a nice touch. I spent a good while snapping photos, trying to capture the sheer scale and beauty of it all. It's moments like these that make me appreciate my hobby of photography, I am glad I brought my camera with me. The air was crisp and clean, and the sun was shining, making it a perfect morning to appreciate the natural beauty of the Douro Valley.

The Douro Valley isn't just a feast for the eyes; it's a symphony of flavors waiting to be discovered.

Next on our itinerary was Quinta do Panascal - Fonseca Porto, one of the most iconic wine estates in the region. As we approached the quinta, the landscape transformed into a sea of vines, stretching as far as the eye could see. Quinta do Panascal has been producing Port wines since the 1840s. We opted for the audio tour, which allowed us to explore the vineyards and learn about the winemaking process at our own pace. The audio guide was available in multiple languages, including English, which was helpful for my friends. I found it fascinating to learn about the different grape varieties grown at the quinta, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, and Tinta Roriz.

After the vineyard tour, we headed to the tasting room, where we sampled a selection of Fonseca's renowned Port wines. The tasting included the Siroco Dry White, Bin 27 Reserve Port, and Fonseca 10 Year Old Tawny Port. Each wine had its own unique character, from the fruity notes of the Bin 27 to the rich, nutty flavors of the 10 Year Old Tawny. I particularly enjoyed the Fonseca Vintage, with its complex aromas and smooth finish. It was interesting to learn that Quinta do Panascal was one of the first properties in the Douro to open its doors to visitors in 1992. The views from the tasting room were simply stunning, overlooking the Távora Valley. It was the perfect setting to savor the exquisite Port wines.

For lunch, we stopped at Figurino do Douro, a restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant is located in Melres, and it offers stunning views of the Douro River. I decided to try the *bacalhau à brás*, a classic codfish dish with scrambled eggs and potatoes. The flavors were rich and satisfying, and the portion was generous. My friends tried other local specialties, such as *polvo à lagareiro* (octopus with roasted potatoes) and *arroz de marisco* (seafood rice). Everyone was impressed with the quality of the food and the friendly service. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely lunch. We spent a couple of hours enjoying our meal and soaking in the beautiful surroundings. The restaurant is highly rated by TheFork users, with a 9.1/10 for food quality, a 9.2/10 for service, and a 9.3/10 for atmosphere.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Pinhão for dinner at Veladouro. This restaurant is praised for its fresh traditional food and friendly service. Luckily I had made reservations, as it was quite busy when we arrived. The location, right by the Pinhão docks, offered stunning views of the Douro River. I opted for the grilled salmon, which was cooked to perfection and served with fresh vegetables. Others in the group tried the black pork and the sea bream, both of which were incredibly fresh and flavorful. We paired our meals with a bottle of local Douro wine, which complemented the dishes perfectly. The atmosphere was lively and vibrant, and we enjoyed watching the boats pass by on the river.

To cap off the night, we decided to head to Porto to experience the city's nightlife. We visited Lust Porto, a nightclub known for its vibrant atmosphere and great music. The club is located in the Galerias de Paris, a lively area in the heart of Porto. The music was a mix of hits and unexpected tracks, keeping the dance floor alive all night. The vibe was amazing, with a mix of locals and tourists all enjoying themselves. While some reviews mention potential scams and violent behavior, we didn't experience any issues. The staff were friendly and efficient, and the drinks were reasonably priced. We danced the night away, enjoying the energy and excitement of Porto's nightlife. It was a fun way to end a day of exploring the Douro Valley.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of the Douro Valley. From the breathtaking views at Miradouro de Valença do Douro to the exquisite Port wines at Quinta do Panascal and the delicious meals at Figurino do Douro and Veladouro, every moment was a sensory delight. I'm looking forward to tomorrow where we plan to visit Miradouro da Estrada Nacional 222 and Quinta de Covela, which I hear has some excellent white wines. It's experiences like these that make traveling so rewarding, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Before I turn in for the night, I should probably figure out where I left my travel adapter and look into buying a light rain jacket, as I seem to have forgotten those essentials at home in Heidelberg. Seems like I was a bit too eager to get going!
