The air is crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and distant snow. Today was the day I'd been both anticipating and slightly dreading: hiking Besseggen. It's known as one of Norway's most iconic hikes, a rite of passage for any serious hiker, and I was determined to experience it, even if solo. The challenge, the views, the sheer scale of the landscape – it all called to me. This morning, after a hearty breakfast, I set off, ready to test my mettle against the mighty Besseggen.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Aasgaard stogo. Located in Beitostølen, the restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere. I enjoyed a traditional Norwegian breakfast, fueling up for the demanding hike ahead. The staff was friendly, and the cozy ambiance helped calm my pre-hike jitters.

After breakfast, I made a quick stop at Sport 1 Lom. I needed to pick up a few last-minute supplies – insect repellent and sunscreen, two items I'd foolishly left back in Heidelberg. It was a rookie mistake, and I was kicking myself for it, but thankfully, Sport 1 Lom had me covered. It’s always a good idea to double-check your packing list, even for seasoned travelers like myself!

With my essentials secured, I headed towards Gjendesheim, the starting point for the Besseggen hike. The drive itself was stunning, with glimpses of turquoise lakes and snow-capped peaks at every turn. Arriving at Gjendesheim, I could already see the imposing ridge in the distance, a jagged line against the sky. I parked the car and joined the queue for the Gjende boat, which would take me to Memurubu, the traditional starting point for the hike.

The boat ride across Lake Gjende was an experience in itself. The water was an unbelievable emerald green, a result of glacial melt carrying sediment into the lake. The views of the surrounding mountains were simply breathtaking. I chatted with a few other hikers on board, all of whom were buzzing with anticipation for the trek ahead. It was comforting to know I wasn't alone in my slightly nervous excitement.

The mountains are calling and I must go.

Arriving at Memurubu, I took a deep breath and started the ascent. The initial climb was steep and relentless, a real calf-burner as some hiking guides had warned. The trail wound its way up through rocky terrain, with the vibrant green waters of Lake Gjende far below. I quickly found my rhythm, focusing on each step and trying to ignore the burning in my legs. It was definitely a challenging start, but the views were already worth it.

As I climbed higher, the landscape became increasingly dramatic. The trail narrowed, and I found myself scrambling over rocks, using my hands for balance. The wind picked up, adding another layer of challenge to the hike. But with each step, the views became even more spectacular. On one side, the emerald green of Gjende, and on the other, the deep blue of Bessvatnet, one of Norway's clearest lakes. The contrast was simply stunning.

Reaching the Besseggen ridge itself was an exhilarating moment. The ridge is narrow, with steep drops on either side, and the wind was howling. It definitely got the adrenaline pumping! I took my time, carefully navigating the rocky path, and soaking in the incredible panoramic views. It was a truly awe-inspiring experience, a moment where I felt completely connected to the raw, untamed beauty of nature.

The hike along the ridge was a mix of challenging climbs and relatively flat stretches, offering a welcome respite for my tired legs. I passed fellow hikers, exchanging smiles and words of encouragement. There was a real sense of camaraderie on the trail, a shared understanding of the challenge and the reward.

After several hours of hiking, I reached the highest point of the Besseggen trail. I paused to catch my breath and take in the view. The world stretched out before me, a tapestry of mountains, lakes, and glaciers. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated joy. I felt a sense of accomplishment, of having conquered something truly challenging and beautiful.

The descent from the ridge was steep and rocky, requiring careful footing. My knees were starting to feel the strain, but the thought of a warm meal and a comfortable bed kept me going. As I neared the end of the trail, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experience. Besseggen had tested me, challenged me, and ultimately rewarded me with some of the most incredible views I've ever seen.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to visit Klimapark 2469. I was intrigued by this unique attraction, an ice tunnel carved into a glacier. The park is located at a high altitude, so I bundled up in my warmest clothes before heading inside. The experience was fascinating, walking through the icy corridors and learning about the history of the glacier and the surrounding environment. It was a perfect way to end a day of adventure.

For dinner, I chose Steaks & Bones - Huset in Beitostølen. I was craving something hearty and satisfying after my long day of hiking, and a juicy steak seemed like the perfect reward. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, with music and friendly staff. I ordered a delicious steak with all the trimmings and savored every bite. It was the perfect way to refuel and relax after a challenging but incredibly rewarding day.

As I sit here now, back at my campsite, the memories of the day flood back. The challenging climb, the breathtaking views, the camaraderie on the trail – it was all an unforgettable experience. Besseggen is more than just a hike; it's a journey, a test of endurance, and a celebration of the beauty of the natural world. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Stuttgongkampen and the Waterfall lookout. I can’t wait to see what other wonders Jotunheimen has in store.

The solitude of solo travel, I'm realizing, has its own unique charm. It allows for a deeper connection with the landscape, a chance to push personal boundaries, and a quiet space for reflection. Though I missed Lena's company today, I know she would have been proud of me for tackling this iconic hike. And who knows, maybe next time I'll convince her to join me on another adventure in this stunning corner of Norway.
