Discover Jotunheimen's beauty on Jotunheimvegen, savor local flavors at charming eateries, and unwind in a cozy pub. A perfect day!
Sunday Serenity in Jotunheimen
Today was a day of embracing the simple pleasures of travel: stunning landscapes, delicious food, and the quiet joy of solo exploration. I set out to experience the famed Jotunheimvegen and soak in the views, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. Plus, I made sure to sample some local cuisine along the way!
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Skeid Kro. Nestled in Skjåk, this roadside restaurant is known for its traditional Norwegian fare. I opted for a classic: scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, accompanied by a strong cup of coffee. It was the perfect fuel for the day ahead. I couldn't help but notice the cozy atmosphere, filled with locals and fellow travelers alike, all eager to start their day in this beautiful region.
With a full stomach, I set off towards Jotunheimvegen, a 45-kilometer toll road that winds through the heart of Jotunheimen National Park. The drive itself was an experience. The gravel road meandered through open mountain terrain, offering panoramic views of glistening lakes and majestic peaks. It felt like I was driving through a postcard, with every turn revealing a new breathtaking vista. The road is only open during the summer months, typically from late June to October, so I was lucky to catch it in its prime.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand adventures, but in the quiet moments of appreciation for the world around us.
I made a stop at Viewpoint Fjord, which offered an incredible panorama of the fjords stretching into the distance. The vastness of the landscape was humbling, and I spent a good while simply taking it all in. It's moments like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to linger and truly connect with a place.

Continuing along Jotunheimvegen, I was struck by the sheer tranquility of the area. Patches of snow still clung to the higher elevations, contrasting with the vibrant green meadows below. I even spotted a few reindeer grazing in the distance, a truly magical sight. The road itself has an interesting history, originally built in the 1950s to replace a milk boat service. It’s amazing to think about how this route has evolved over the years, now serving as a gateway for tourists to experience the beauty of Jotunheimen.
By lunchtime, I had worked up quite an appetite again. I decided to stop at Ruten Fjellstue, a mountain lodge known for its traditional Norwegian cuisine and stunning views. The lodge is nestled in Espedalen, offering a beautiful panorama of Jotunheimen. I opted for their famous trout, sourced locally from Espedalen, prepared with fresh herbs and served with potatoes. It was a delightful meal, and the cozy atmosphere of the lodge made it even more enjoyable. Apparently, Ruten Fjellstue has been welcoming travelers for over 80 years, and it’s easy to see why. The hosts, Berit and Arthur, are the third generation to run the place, and their hospitality is truly heartwarming.

As the afternoon wore on, I continued my drive along Jotunheimvegen, making several stops to capture the scenery with my camera. Photography is one of my passions, and Jotunheimen provided endless opportunities for stunning shots. I even learned that the area is known for birdwatching, particularly along the northern shoreline of Lake Vinstri. Apparently, it's a great spot to see raptors and various other bird species.
Before heading back for the evening, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Andre Etasje in Lom. This restaurant is located in an old Swiss villa and is known for its unique atmosphere and delicious food. I had heard great things about their menu, which features local ingredients with a modern twist. I decided to try their reindeer steak, and it was absolutely divine. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated with repurposed furniture and colorful accents, creating a cozy and inviting ambiance.

To cap off the day, I decided to check out Svingen Pub in Lom. This pub is a local institution, known for its lively atmosphere and wide selection of beers. I enjoyed a local brew while chatting with some of the locals, learning more about the area and its history. It was a great way to unwind after a day of driving and hiking, and I felt a real sense of connection to this place. Svingen Pub is known as the first real pub in Beitostølen and is a popular spot for after-ski and watching sports events.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible part of Norway. The landscapes are truly awe-inspiring, and the local culture is warm and welcoming. Tomorrow, I'm planning to hike Besseggen, which I've heard offers some of the most dramatic views in Jotunheimen. I'm also hoping to visit Klimapark 2469, an ice tunnel experience that sounds fascinating. I’ll make sure to grab breakfast at Aasgaard stogo before hitting the trails, and I’m already looking forward to lunch at Brimi Sæter. Dinner at Steaks & Bones - Huset sounds like a perfect way to end the day. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up a souvenir at Sport 1 Lom.
For now, it's time to rest up and prepare for another day of adventure. Jotunheimen, you've truly captured my heart!
