Lom's Charms Unveiled
Today was all about soaking in the unique atmosphere of Lom, a village nestled in the heart of Jotunheimen National Park. It’s amazing how a single day can offer such a diverse range of experiences, from thought-provoking art to the simple pleasure of savoring local cuisine. I find myself constantly amazed by the beauty and serenity of Norway, and today was no exception.
My day started with a hearty breakfast at Bakeriet i Lom uteservering. The aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries filled the air, and I couldn't resist trying one of their famous cinnamon buns. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures. Sipping my coffee and enjoying the morning sun, I felt grateful for the simple pleasures of travel. This bakery is known as one of the best in Norway, and after tasting their baked goods, I can certainly see why.

Next on the agenda was a visit to Steinplassen, a monument that pays homage to cairns found on mountains. It's a simple yet powerful tribute to the enduring human connection with nature. Standing there, surrounded by the majestic peaks of Jotunheimen, I felt a sense of awe and humility. The Valdresflye Tourist Road, where Steinplassen is located, offered stunning views of the landscape. It's easy to see why this area is a favorite among hikers and nature lovers.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
After Steinplassen, I headed to the Poem Ladder of Jan Magnus Bruheim in Skjåk. This unique attraction features poems engraved in steel, bolted to rocks along a nature trail. As I climbed the ladder, reading each verse, I was struck by the beauty and simplicity of Bruheim's words. His poems, inspired by his time living by the coast, resonated deeply with me. It was a truly immersive experience, blending art and nature in a way that was both inspiring and thought-provoking. The ladder is located near the E6 highway, making it accessible for travelers.

Before heading back to Lom, I stopped by Fjell og Fritid AS, a sporting goods store in Lom. I needed to pick up some insect repellent and sunscreen, two items I had regrettably forgotten to pack. The store had a wide selection of gear and supplies for all sorts of outdoor activities, and the staff were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. It's reassuring to know that there are well-equipped stores like this in the area, catering to the needs of adventurers like myself.

For lunch, I decided to try Ruten Fjellstue, a mountain lodge with a rich history dating back to 1939. Located at the top of Espedalen, the lodge offers stunning views of Langsua National Park and Jotunheimen. The food was delicious, featuring local produce and traditional recipes with a modern twist. I enjoyed a hearty meal while soaking in the cozy atmosphere of the lodge. It's a perfect base for hiking and cycling in the summer, and ski touring in the winter.

In the evening, I treated myself to dinner at Banken Bryggeri & Spiseri / Weistad Overnatting in Heidal. This gastropub, located in an old bank, has its own brewery in the basement. I sampled some of their craft beers and enjoyed a delicious meal made with high-quality ingredients. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and I struck up a conversation with some locals who shared their stories about the area. It was a great way to end the day, connecting with the community and experiencing the local culture.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Jotunheimen National Park continues to surprise and delight me with its natural beauty and cultural richness. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Lom bygdamuseun and Besseggen 1 [If I'm feeling brave enough for the challenging hike!]. For dinner, I'm planning to visit the Jotunheimen Fjellstue [Although Toppen Skybar is tempting me for a drink]. It's hard to believe that my solo adventure is coming to an end soon. I want to savor every moment and make the most of my remaining time in this incredible place.
It's funny, back in Heidelberg, Lena and I often talk about escaping the daily grind. I brew my own beer as a way to unwind, and she gets lost in her graphic design work. But being here, surrounded by this majestic landscape, makes me realize that sometimes you need to completely immerse yourself in nature to truly recharge. Maybe we should consider a longer trip next time, or even find a way to spend a few months each year exploring new places. The possibilities are endless, and I'm excited to see what adventures lie ahead. For now, I'm content to soak in the tranquility of Jotunheimen and appreciate the beauty of the present moment. I really needed this trip, and I'm so glad I came.
