Beacon of Light and Distant Shores

Today's journey around Yakushima was a delightful blend of coastal exploration, cultural immersion, and gastronomic adventures. David and I set out to discover the island's quieter corners, seeking out scenic views and local experiences that would deepen our appreciation for this natural paradise. It was a day filled with unexpected discoveries and moments of serene beauty.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It's always amusing to start the day at an airport when you're not actually flying anywhere! The restaurant offered a simple but satisfying Japanese-style breakfast, which fueled us up for our explorations. After breakfast, we headed towards our first destination: the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering glimpses of the rugged coastline and lush greenery. As we approached the lighthouse, the landscape opened up, revealing a stunning view of the East China Sea.

The Yakushima-todai Lighthouse stands proudly on the edge of Nagata Cape, a beacon guiding ships through the vast expanse of the ocean. The lighthouse itself is quite charming, painted a brilliant white that stands out against the blue backdrop of the sea and sky. We took our time exploring the area around the lighthouse, breathing in the fresh sea air and marveling at the panoramic views. The coastline here is dramatic, with rocky cliffs meeting the crashing waves, creating a mesmerizing scene. It's easy to see why this spot is cherished by locals and visitors alike.

After the lighthouse, we made our way to the East China Sea Observatory. This roadside observation deck offered yet another perspective on the island's stunning coastal scenery. From here, we could see the vast expanse of the East China Sea stretching out before us, meeting the horizon in a seamless blend of blue. The observatory provided a perfect vantage point for taking in the sheer scale of the ocean and the rugged beauty of Yakushima's coastline. David, ever the history enthusiast, was particularly fascinated by the strategic importance of this location, imagining the countless ships that have sailed these waters over the centuries.

Having soaked in the coastal views, we decided to delve into the local culture with a visit to the Yakushima No Kokusan Tatami Nakajima Tatami Shop. As someone who appreciates craftsmanship and traditional arts, I was eager to see how tatami mats are made. The shop was a treasure trove of woven wonders, with tatami mats in various sizes and designs. The owner, a friendly and knowledgeable artisan, explained the intricate process of making tatami mats, from harvesting the igusa reeds to weaving them into the final product. I found myself drawn to the natural textures and subtle fragrances of the tatami, reminiscent of my childhood in Sai Kung, where such craftsmanship was highly valued. We ended up purchasing a small tatami mat to bring back home, a tangible reminder of our time on Yakushima. Perhaps I can use it during my Tai Chi in the park when we return to Stratford.

Lunchtime found us at Iso no Kaori, a highly recommended seafood restaurant in Anbo Harbor. This place came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint! The restaurant had a cozy, authentic atmosphere, with tatami mats for seating. We started with an order of deep-fried flying fish, a local delicacy that was crispy, flavorful, and utterly delicious. We also sampled some fresh sashimi, which was incredibly tender and practically melted in our mouths. The staff were friendly and accommodating, making our dining experience all the more enjoyable. David, adventurous as always, even tried a local shochu, declaring it a perfect complement to the seafood.

As the afternoon progressed, we made our way to the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant, located in the center of Miyanoura, offered a diverse menu with a chic atmosphere. We opted for a table with a view, overlooking the town and the surrounding hills. The menu featured a mix of local and international dishes, and we decided to try a bit of everything. The pork belly dish was a standout, tender and flavorful, as was the unique sashimi selection. The restaurant also had a wonderful selection of drinks, including local craft beer and tankan juice, a citrus fruit native to Yakushima. It was a delightful way to end our day, savoring delicious food and drinks while reflecting on our adventures.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Yakushima's natural wonders, including the Ohko Waterfall and the Botanic Gardens. I'm particularly excited to see the waterfall, as I've heard it's one of the most beautiful spots on the island. And perhaps David and I will celebrate our day with a drink at Ambar.

Today was a reminder of the simple joys of travel – discovering new places, meeting new people, and savoring new experiences. As we head back to our ryokan, I feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this enchanting island. Yakushima, with its natural beauty and cultural richness, has truly captured our hearts. And I am so glad I have David here with me to share these experiences. It makes it all the more special.

And I am especially thankful I remembered to pack my rain gear! Although I did forget my portable phone charger and insect repellent. Oh well, one can't be too prepared, can one?

I am looking forward to tomorrow.
