A Day of Discovery and Reflection

Today, Yakushima revealed more of its captivating character. It wasn't just about the stunning landscapes, but also about understanding the island's past and its deep connection to nature. David and I set out to explore, eager to uncover the stories hidden within its waterfalls and museums.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Each Meal, a Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter. The name itself promised something special, and it delivered. The food was simple, yet exquisite, highlighting local ingredients. I savored every bite, appreciating the care and attention to detail that went into preparing our meal. It was a perfect start to a day filled with exploration.

Our first stop was Senpiro Falls. As we approached, the roar of the water grew louder, building anticipation. The falls are easily accessible, and as we rounded a bend, the sight was simply breathtaking. The water cascaded down a massive granite rock face, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The sheer scale of the falls was awe-inspiring, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder at nature's power. The name 'Senpiro' means 'one thousand fields,' referring to the immense size of the granite rock, which is said to be as wide as one thousand people holding hands. It was easy to see why this spot is so popular; the falls are at their most spectacular after a rain, and today, with the recent showers, they were truly magnificent.

David, ever the history buff, was fascinated by the geology of the area. He pointed out the unique V-shaped valley carved by the water over centuries, a testament to the relentless force of nature. I, on the other hand, was captivated by the lush greenery surrounding the falls. Ancient cedar trees clung to the cliffs, their roots intertwined with the rock, creating a scene straight out of a painting. We spent a good hour simply soaking in the beauty, taking photos, and listening to the soothing sound of the water.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

After the falls, we drove to the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore. I was particularly excited about this, as I always find museums to be incredible portals into understanding the culture and heritage of a place. I was hoping to deepen my appreciation for the island's unique identity. The museum is housed in a charming building, and as we stepped inside, we were greeted by a cool, quiet atmosphere. The exhibits were well-curated, showcasing artifacts and documents that told the story of Yakushima's past. Although some signs were only in Japanese, we were given an English pamphlet that helped us navigate the exhibits.

I learned about the island's history of logging, and the impact it had on the ancient cedar forests. It was a sobering reminder of the delicate balance between human needs and environmental conservation. The museum also highlighted the unique lifestyle of the islanders, their close relationship with the sea and the mountains, and their traditions of worship and respect for nature. One of the highlights was a preserved section of the Jomon Sugi tree, offering a tangible connection to this ancient giant.

David was particularly interested in the displays about the island's fishing industry, learning about the different types of fish caught in the surrounding waters and the techniques used by local fishermen. He was also fascinated by the exhibits on the island's unique food culture, including the preparation of smoked mackerel and flying fish, local delicacies that reflect Yakushima's wild and untamed atmosphere. I made a mental note to try some of these dishes before we leave.

For lunch, we decided to try the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It was a convenient choice, and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. I had a delicious bowl of ramen topped with fried tobiuo (flying fish), a local specialty. It was crispy, flavorful, and a true taste of Yakushima. David opted for a set meal with grilled mackerel, rice, and miso soup. It was a simple, satisfying meal that fueled us for the rest of the day.

In the late afternoon, we sought out Seirios, a local bar known for its craft beers. It was a cozy spot, with a friendly atmosphere. I tried a Yakushima Cedar flavored beer from Catch the Beer brewery, which was surprisingly refreshing and had a unique, woody aroma. David, never one to shy away from the local spirit, sampled some Imo-shochu, a sweet potato distilled liquor that is a Yakushima specialty. We chatted with the bartender, who shared some insights about the island's culture and history. It was a relaxing way to unwind after a day of exploration.

Before dinner, we took a stroll along the coast, enjoying the sea breeze and the stunning sunset. The sky was ablaze with color, painting the clouds in shades of orange, pink, and purple. It was a perfect moment of tranquility, a reminder of the simple joys of life. We reflected on our experiences of the day, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore this enchanting island.

For dinner, we went to a heavenly kitchen, drawn in by its intriguing name. The restaurant lived up to its promise, serving delicious, innovative cuisine that highlighted local ingredients. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the service was impeccable. I savored every bite, feeling a sense of contentment and gratitude.

As the day drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to Yakushima. It wasn't just about the stunning landscapes, but also about the history, the culture, and the people. I felt like I was beginning to understand the soul of this island, its deep connection to nature, and its enduring spirit.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse and the East China Sea Observatory. I am excited to see more of the island’s coastline and learn about its maritime history. I am also looking forward to trying more of the local cuisine, perhaps some smoked mackerel or another flying fish dish. Until then, I will cherish the memories of this day, the whispers of the water, and the echoes of history that have filled my heart.

As I sit here writing, I realize that I had forgotten to pack insect repellent! A rookie error for someone who loves exploring nature. I will definitely need to buy some tomorrow. Luckily, I remembered my travel journal, which has been invaluable for capturing my thoughts and experiences. I am also grateful that I packed my Cantonese-English dictionary, which has been helpful in communicating with the locals. I am constantly reminded of how fortunate I am to be able to experience this beautiful place with my husband, David. His enthusiasm for history and culture complements my own curiosity about the natural world, and together, we make a great team of explorers. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures.

As Frances, an ALT (Assistant Language Teacher) who lived on Yakushima for three years, once said, getting out of the city and experiencing the natural beauty of Japan is essential for a fulfilling travel experience. I couldn't agree more. Yakushima is a treasure, a place that will stay with me long after I leave.

Good night from Yakushima.
