A Day of Discovery in Yakushima

Today was a day of exploration and immersion into the heart of Yakushima's natural beauty and culture. David and I set out to uncover some of the island's hidden gems, from cascading waterfalls to cultural insights, all while savoring the local flavors. It was a day that deepened our appreciation for this unique UNESCO World Heritage site.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Il Mare. We opted for a delightful mix of seafood and pasta, crafted with fresh, local ingredients. It was the perfect start to fuel our adventures, and the Italian twist was a pleasant change of pace. I must admit, enjoying Italian cuisine with a Japanese touch was quite a delightful experience.

After breakfast, our first stop was Ryujin Falls. The journey there was an adventure in itself, as the waterfall is tucked away, barely visible from the road. The moment we stepped into the forest, we were enveloped by the serene atmosphere and the sounds of nature. The 30-meter high waterfall was nestled perfectly in the forest, void of many man-made developments, which only amplified its beauty. The falls were absolutely mesmerizing. The cascade of water against the backdrop of lush greenery was a sight to behold. I couldn't help but feel a sense of tranquility wash over me as we stood there, admiring nature's artistry.

Next on our itinerary was the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center. This center proved to be an invaluable resource for understanding the unique ecosystem and cultural heritage of Yakushima. The exhibits offered insights into the island's natural environment and the daily lives of its people, with helpful signs in English. We watched the film 'Yakushima – a symphony of forests and water' on the wide-screen cinema, which was a highlight, offering a captivating overview of the island's beauty and biodiversity. I learned about the island's history and the importance of preserving its natural resources. The center is a must-visit for anyone wanting to delve deeper into Yakushima's wonders. It really helped put our entire trip into perspective.

For lunch, we headed to Kamogawa Restaurant. This local eatery is known for its traditional Japanese dishes and local specialties like flying fish. The atmosphere was casual and welcoming, and we enjoyed eating alongside locals. David decided to try the flying fish, a local delicacy, while I opted for a comforting bowl of udon noodles. The meal was simple yet satisfying, offering a true taste of Yakushima's culinary scene. I found it charming that the restaurant was no-frills but very friendly, a perfect spot to immerse ourselves in the local culture.

In the evening, we decided to try a different culinary experience at Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. The restaurant had a unique ambiance, blending local flavors with artistic presentation. We savored a variety of dishes, each a work of art in itself. The Yakushima Gallery Restaurant certainly provided a feast for both the eyes and the palate.

After dinner, we decided to unwind at Cafe&Bar RainTree. This cozy spot is known for its unique blend of cafe and karaoke culture. We enjoyed a few drinks and listened to some locals singing their hearts out. It was a fun and lively way to end our day, experiencing a different side of Yakushima's nightlife. I even tried my hand at a Cantonese song, much to the amusement (and perhaps slight horror) of the other patrons.

As the day comes to a close, I am reflecting on the incredible experiences we had. From the awe-inspiring Ryujin Falls to the insightful Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center, every moment was filled with discovery and appreciation for this remarkable island. And with a karaoke session in the books, I am happy to report that my Cantonese still has some life in it, although David might suggest otherwise!

Tomorrow, on Day 10, we plan to explore more of Yakushima's natural wonders, including Daio Sugi and Yahazudake Shrine. I am looking forward to more hiking and immersing ourselves in the island's serene beauty. I'm particularly excited about seeing Daio Sugi, the giant cedar, and visiting Yahazudake Shrine. I must remember to buy insect repellent, though, as I forgot it on the trip, and the bugs have been relentless!
