First Footsteps in an Enchanted Realm

Today marked the beginning of our Yakushima adventure, and what a start it has been! From the moment we stepped off the plane, the island's unique charm enveloped us. The air was thick with the scent of cedar and damp earth, a fragrant promise of the ancient forests that awaited. I'm excited to share my experiences as we delve deeper into this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. Fuelled by a traditional Japanese breakfast, David and I were ready to immerse ourselves in the natural wonders of Yakushima. It's always fascinating to observe the culinary nuances of a new place, and this morning was no exception. I found myself appreciating the delicate balance of flavors, a prelude to the sensory feast that Yakushima promised.

Our first stop was the Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center. It was incredibly informative. The center provided a comprehensive overview of the island’s unique ecosystem and the conservation efforts in place. I was particularly impressed by the exhibits detailing the island's diverse flora and fauna. It’s fascinating to learn about the unique species that thrive here, many of which are found nowhere else on earth. David, ever the history teacher, was captivated by the historical context of Yakushima's preservation. We learned about the island's designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site and the ongoing efforts to protect its natural beauty. It was a great starting point to truly appreciate the island's ecological significance. The friendly staff were very helpful and provided valuable information in English. It’s a must-visit for anyone coming to the island for the first time, as it sets the stage for understanding Yakushima's natural wonders.

The forest speaks in whispers, and those who listen closely will hear the stories of centuries etched into the rings of ancient trees.

Next on our itinerary was Yakusugi Land, and it was nothing short of magical. As we journeyed deeper into the park, the ancient cedar trees, or *yakusugi*, began to reveal themselves. These trees, over a thousand years old, possess an aura of timelessness and resilience. We opted for the 150-minute hiking trail, which allowed us to venture further into the heart of the forest. The trail was well-maintained, but sturdy hiking boots were definitely a necessity, especially with the intermittent rain. I was glad I remembered to pack ours! I swear I saw Emily's pair sitting by the door as we left Stratford. The sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, casting an ethereal glow on the moss-covered forest floor. The air was crisp and clean, invigorating our senses with every breath. We were surrounded by towering trees, their gnarled branches reaching towards the sky like ancient arms. It was easy to feel dwarfed by their grandeur, a humbling reminder of the power and longevity of nature.

We saw many distinguished and unique *yakusugi* cedar trees with individual names such as Buddhasugi. The park has five maintained hiking trails, a 30, 50, 80, 150, and 210-minute course options to choose from. The trails wind through dense forests, alongside mossy streams, and feature wooden walkways and bridges. We crossed a few bridges and took the time to appreciate the clarity and tranquility of the mountain river. One thing I found very interesting and remarkable about Yakusugi Land is the way in which the second-generation cedars have grown back on the felled trees. This gives the trees a very unique shape.

For lunch, we stopped at the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. The restaurant had a cozy ambiance and showcased local artwork, which added to the overall charm. The food was delicious, featuring fresh, local ingredients. I opted for a seafood dish, while David chose a mountain vegetable set. Both were flavorful and satisfying, providing us with the energy we needed for the rest of our day's adventures.

After our hike, we decided to explore the local markets. We visited the Yakushima Market, hoping to find some local crafts and souvenirs. The market was bustling with activity, and we enjoyed browsing the various stalls. I picked up a beautiful piece of Yakushima cedar wood carving, while David found a unique tea set. It was a great opportunity to interact with the locals and learn more about their culture. The Furusato Market was well-stocked with Yakushima gifts and crafts, foodstuffs and books. I was hoping to find some Ponkan and Tankan orange, but was not successful.

As evening approached, we made our way to Katagiri Flying Fish Restaurant for dinner. I had heard wonderful things about their flying fish dishes, a local delicacy. The restaurant was situated by the coast, offering stunning views of the sunset. The flying fish was prepared in a variety of ways, and each dish was a culinary delight. The delicate flavor of the fish, combined with the expert preparation, made for a memorable dining experience. David, who is usually hesitant to try new things, was pleasantly surprised by the unique taste of the flying fish.

To cap off our first day, we decided to visit Cafe&Bar RainTree. It was a cozy spot with a relaxed atmosphere. We enjoyed a couple of drinks while listening to some local music. I even tried my hand at karaoke, much to David's amusement. It was a fun and lighthearted way to end our day, immersing ourselves in the local nightlife. The karaoke bar and cafe is known for its vibrant blend of karaoke and cafe culture. The island has many men and women traveling alone, so it is a good place to meet people.

As I reflect on our first day, I am filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation for the days to come. Yakushima has already captivated me with its natural beauty and unique culture. I am eager to explore more of this enchanting island and share my experiences with you. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Shiratani Unsui Gorge and Wilson's Stump. I've heard that the gorge is like stepping into a scene from a Studio Ghibli film, and I can't wait to see it for myself. I am also looking forward to seeing Wilson's Stump, which I hear is gigantic and heart-shaped when viewed from the inside. It’s hard to believe this is only the first day. I already feel a deep connection to this island, its ancient forests, and the warm hospitality of its people.

“To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles.” This quote perfectly encapsulates my experience today. Yakushima is indeed a place of miracles, where nature's wonders are on full display. I am grateful for the opportunity to be here and to share this journey with you. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our exploration of this magical island. Good night from Yakushima!

The weather forecast for the next few days indicates a high chance of rain, so I'm glad we packed our rain gear. I'm also reminded that I forgot my portable phone charger and insect repellent. Hopefully, I can find these items at one of the local shops. I'm learning that even the most meticulously planned trips can have minor hiccups, but it's all part of the adventure.

I am also looking forward to visiting the Yakusugi Museum next to the Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center which features a branch from a 1660-year-old cedar tree and displays on the history of the coexistence between nature and humans in the area.
