Embracing the Wild Beauty of Hornstrandir

Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the raw, untamed beauty of Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. It’s a place where the elements dictate the rhythm, and every view feels like a privilege. David and I set out with a sense of anticipation, eager to explore more of this remote corner of Iceland.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Dunhagi. The cozy atmosphere was a welcome contrast to the chilly November air outside. The cafe is known for its local cuisine, and I decided to try the Icelandic lamb, while David opted for the fresh local fish. The flavors were rich and comforting, setting us up perfectly for a day of hiking. It felt like a home away from home, especially with the friendly owner who shared stories about the area.

With our bellies full, we headed towards Drangaskörð, a mountain pass that promised stunning views. The hike was challenging, especially with the unpredictable November weather. The temperatures hovered around freezing, and there was a mix of rain and snow. We bundled up in our warmest gear, grateful for our waterproof jackets and hiking boots. I was especially glad I had remembered to pack my gloves and hat! The landscape was breathtaking, with snow-dusted peaks and expansive valleys stretching out before us. It was a stark reminder of nature's power and beauty. The wind was biting, but the views were more than worth it. This time of year, the weather is definitely something to consider; the daylight hours are shorter, and the conditions can change rapidly.

The true beauty of Iceland lies not just in its landscapes, but in the resilience and spirit of its people, who have learned to thrive in harmony with nature's challenges.

Next on our itinerary was Möngufoss, a waterfall cascading down a rugged cliff face. The hike to the waterfall was equally rewarding. The sound of the water grew louder as we approached, and the sight of the falls was simply mesmerizing. The water plunged into a pool below, creating a misty spray that glistened in the weak sunlight. I took out my camera, determined to capture the moment, though photos never quite do justice to the real thing. We spent some time simply taking in the scene, feeling the spray on our faces and listening to the roar of the falls.

After our hike, we made our way to Ísafjörður, where we had lunch at Restaurant Galdur - Seafood Restaurant. Being a seafood restaurant, David was in his element. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, serving incredibly fresh and flavorful dishes. I enjoyed a traditional Icelandic fish stew, while David savored the Arctic char. It was the perfect way to refuel after our outdoor adventures. We chatted about our plans for tomorrow, when we hope to visit Drangajökull glacier, weather permitting. I am looking forward to tomorrow, and I hope we can make it to Drangajökull glacier, but I know that the weather in November is always unpredictable.

Before dinner, we stopped by Þristur, a local shop in Ísafjörður. I was hoping to find a solar charger, as I realized I had forgotten to pack one. While they didn't have the charger, I did find a beautiful hand-knitted wool scarf, which I promptly bought as a souvenir. David picked up some Icelandic candy. It’s a small shop, but full of character and local charm. I was able to find a small treat called Þristur (50gr).

For dinner, we chose Logn, restaurant & bar, located in Hótel Ísafjörður. The restaurant had a varied menu, and a cozy lounge area. I decided to try one of their interesting gin drinks, while David enjoyed a local beer. The atmosphere was relaxed, and we enjoyed reflecting on the day's adventures. It’s amazing how much we managed to pack into one day, from hiking and waterfalls to local cuisine and shopping.

As I write this, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventure. We are planning to visit Drangajökull, one of the major glaciers in the area. Of course, we'll need to keep an eye on the weather, as conditions in November can be unpredictable. But whatever tomorrow brings, I know it will be another unforgettable day in Hornstrandir. I am also looking forward to the bar Verbudin.

Hornstrandir continues to surprise and inspire me. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature. And as much as I love exploring new places, there's something special about returning to a place like Iceland, where the landscapes feel both familiar and endlessly new.
