Exploring the Tranquil Beauty of Mae Hong Son
Day 9: Chasing Waterfalls and Finding Serenity in Mae Hong Son's Embrace
Mette and Hans explore Mae Hong Son's natural beauty, from stunning waterfalls to breathtaking viewpoints, savoring local flavors along the way.
A Day of Nature's Wonders
Today was all about immersing ourselves in the raw, untamed beauty of Northern Thailand. We ventured into the heart of Mae Hong Son's wilderness, seeking out cascading waterfalls and panoramic viewpoints. It was a day filled with the kind of simple joys that make traveling so rewarding – the scent of pine in the air, the sound of rushing water, and the warmth of the Thai sun on our skin.
Our day began in Pai, where we enjoyed a comforting breakfast at P'lai Rice Soup. I opted for the congee with shiitake mushrooms, while Hans had the classic pork version. It's amazing how a simple bowl of rice soup can be so flavorful and satisfying. The friendly atmosphere and quick service made it a perfect start to our adventurous day. Fuelled up, we set off towards Namtok Mae Surin National Park. The drive itself was an experience, with winding roads offering glimpses of the stunning mountainous landscape. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty with Hans by my side.

Upon arriving at Namtok Mae Surin National Park, we were immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. The park is known for its impressive features, including Doi Pui mountain and the towering Mae Surin Falls. We decided to hike the Mae Sakut Nature Trail, a path that promised a close encounter with the park's diverse flora and fauna. The trail was well-maintained, and we enjoyed spotting various types of wild plants and wildlife along the way.
The highlight of the hike was, of course, the Mae Surin Waterfall. As we approached, we could hear the thunderous roar of the water cascading down the cliff face. It was truly a sight to behold – a powerful, single-tiered cascade plunging into a lush gorge. I felt so small standing there, in awe of nature's grandeur. We took some photos, trying to capture the moment, but no picture could truly do it justice.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand gestures, but in the quiet moments of appreciation for the world around us.
After spending a good amount of time at the waterfall, we continued our journey to Huai Kung Viewpoint. The road to the viewpoint was quite an adventure itself, with some steep inclines and hairpin turns. But the views along the way were worth it, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys. As we climbed higher, the air grew cooler, and the scent of pine became more intense.

Reaching Huai Kung Viewpoint, we were rewarded with a breathtaking panorama. The landscape stretched out before us, a tapestry of rolling hills, dense forests, and distant villages. It was the perfect spot to take a deep breath and soak in the serenity of the moment. We spent some time simply enjoying the view, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such natural beauty together. Hans, ever the thoughtful one, pointed out a small bird soaring effortlessly through the sky, reminding me of the freedom and adventure that travel brings.
As the afternoon drew to a close, we made our way back towards town, our stomachs rumbling. For lunch, we stopped at An Pochana Thai Food. I decided to try their Tom Yum soup, craving something spicy and flavorful. Hans opted for one of their noodle dishes, and we shared a plate of spring rolls. The food was delicious, and the service was friendly. It was a perfect way to refuel after a day of hiking and exploring.

In the late afternoon, I felt the urge to do some shopping, so we stopped by Tom Scoendhand clothes. to look at the local clothes. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-woven scarf, a perfect souvenir to remind me of our time in Mae Hong Son.

For dinner, we decided to try Pa Hom Noodle, a local noodle shop known for its flavorful dishes. I ordered the classic noodle soup, while Hans tried the dry noodles with pork. Both were delicious, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure and exploration.

As we walked back to our accommodation, I reflected on the day's experiences. We had chased waterfalls, conquered viewpoints, and savored local flavors. But more than that, we had connected with nature, with each other, and with the spirit of adventure that had brought us to Mae Hong Son in the first place.
Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Mae La Luang Viewpoint and Pam Bok Waterfall. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems Mae Hong Son has in store for us. And perhaps we'll find a cozy spot at Heaven Cafe Mae hong son for an evening drink. Until then, goodnight from Thailand.
I'm also reminded that I need to pick up some bug spray – a crucial item I somehow forgot to pack! And maybe a travel guidebook on Mae Hong Son would be helpful too.
It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel. The chance to disconnect from the everyday, to immerse myself in new experiences, and to create lasting memories with the person I love most. It's a privilege, and one that I never take for granted. I am so grateful for this trip with Hans.
And it is also so nice to be traveling during the cool season. It makes the days that much nicer.
I think I'll try and learn some more Thai phrases tonight so I can try them out tomorrow. I think the locals really appreciate when you try to speak their language! I also want to try a Korean Scallion pancake when I get back to Berlin. Hans and I love to cook when we are at home.
I am also thinking about some of the movies that have come out this year. I hope to catch Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy when I get back to Berlin. We love to go to the movies, especially in the winter.
I am also thinking about getting some new workout clothes when I get back to Berlin. I have seen some adds for honeygrow, and I like their style.
