Exploring the Tranquil Beauty of Mae Hong Son
Day 10: Chasing Waterfalls and Valley Views: A Day of Serenity in Mae Hong Son
Discover the tranquil beauty of Mae Hong Son with Mette and Hans as they explore waterfalls, viewpoints, and savor local flavors.
Finding Peace in Mae Hong Son's Natural Wonders
Today was all about embracing the serene beauty of Mae Hong Son. After several days of exploring the town and surrounding areas, Hans and I decided to dedicate a day to nature, seeking out the stunning viewpoints and refreshing waterfalls that this region is known for. With the December sun shining warmly, but not overwhelmingly, we set off on an adventure that proved to be a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.
Our day began, as many good days do, with a hearty breakfast. We found ourselves at Hommie Samosas, a local spot known for its delicious, crispy samosas. Though I had heard they have a stall at the Saturday night market in Chiang Mai, experiencing them here in Mae Hong Son felt special. It's these small, local experiences that truly make a trip memorable.

With our appetites satisfied, we headed towards our first destination: Mae La Luang Viewpoint. The drive itself was a treat, winding through the picturesque countryside. As we climbed higher, the air grew cooler, a welcome change from the warmth of the town. December in Mae Hong Son offers pleasant weather, with average temperatures ranging from 13-26°C, making it ideal for outdoor activities.

Reaching the viewpoint, we were greeted by a breathtaking panorama of rolling hills and lush valleys. The landscape was dotted with rice fields, creating a mesmerizing tapestry of greens and golds. It was the kind of view that makes you want to pause, breathe deeply, and simply soak it all in. We spent a good hour there, taking photos and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere. There's something incredibly calming about being surrounded by nature, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. I even spotted a small playground nearby, which made me chuckle, imagining how much fun children would have playing amidst such stunning scenery.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of settings, where nature's beauty speaks directly to the soul.
After the viewpoint, our next stop was Pam Bok Waterfall. The drive to the waterfall was an adventure in itself, taking us along a slightly bumpy road that added a touch of excitement to the journey. As we got closer, we could hear the gentle sound of water cascading down the rocks.

The waterfall is nestled in a narrow canyon, creating a unique and intimate setting. The water wasn't gushing, as it sometimes does during the rainy season, but it was still a refreshing sight. I was glad I'd remembered to pack my lightweight hiking shoes, as the rocks leading to the waterfall were a bit slippery.
We took a dip in the natural pool at the base of the waterfall, the cool water providing a welcome respite from the afternoon heat. It was invigorating! I can imagine that during the rainy season, the waterfall would be even more impressive, but I appreciated the peacefulness of the scene today.
By late afternoon, our stomachs were starting to rumble, reminding us that it was time for lunch. We decided to try Baanpai restaurant, known for its traditional Thai dishes. It had a charming, open ambiance, and we were quickly seated by the friendly staff. Hans opted for the Massaman Curry with Chicken, while I decided on the classic Pad Kra Pow. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, and we savored every bite. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of exploring.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back towards Mae Hong Son town, but not before making a pit stop at Heaven Cafe. This place, open from 5 PM to midnight, has a reputation for its cozy atmosphere and live music. We grabbed a couple of drinks and enjoyed the laid-back vibe as local musicians serenaded the crowd. It was the perfect way to wind down after a day filled with natural beauty.

Reflecting on our day, I realized how much I appreciate these moments of tranquility. Life in Berlin can be hectic, and it's easy to get caught up in the daily grind. But trips like this remind me of the importance of slowing down, connecting with nature, and appreciating the simple things in life.
Tomorrow marks our last day in Mae Hong Son, and we plan to visit Huay Pu Keng - Kayan Village and Wat Luang. I'm particularly excited to learn more about the Kayan people and their unique culture. But for now, I'm content to relax, enjoy the cool evening air, and reflect on another wonderful day in Thailand. And I really need to buy some bug spray, as I forgot to pack it, and the mosquitos are having a feast!
Thinking about our travel plans back to Berlin, I am once again grateful for the flexibility that my job as a freelance translator affords me. It allows me to fully immerse myself in experiences like these, without the constant worry of deadlines looming over my head.
As we prepare to leave Mae Hong Son tomorrow, I'm already cherishing the memories we've made here. From the stunning viewpoints to the refreshing waterfalls and the delicious local cuisine, this charming town has captured a special place in my heart. Tomorrow, before we leave, we are planning to have breakfast at Ban Nin Tra Mae Hong Son and lunch at Mae Hong Son Islamic Restaurant. For dinner, we'll try Than Hong Son Restaurant. Before heading to the airport, we might stop by Cross Tattoo Studio! It will be sad to leave this tranquil paradise, but I know that we'll carry the spirit of Mae Hong Son with us, wherever we go.
