Exploring the Tranquil Beauty of Mae Hong Son
Day 11: A Fond Farewell to Mae Hong Son: Reflecting on Tranquility and Cultural Richness
Mette and Hans conclude their Thai adventure in Mae Hong Son, cherishing serene landscapes, Kayan village visits, and culinary delights.
Saying Goodbye to Mae Hong Son
As our Thai adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the serene beauty and cultural richness of Mae Hong Son. This final day was a tapestry of unique experiences, from meeting the inspiring women of the Kayan Village to savoring the local flavors that have defined our culinary journey. It's amazing how a place can capture your heart in just a few days, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.
Our last day in Mae Hong Son began with a delightful breakfast at Ban Nin Tra Mae Hong Son. The restaurant's charming ambiance and delicious Vietnamese cuisine were the perfect start to our day. I opted for the spring rolls, while Hans enjoyed a hearty omelette. Sipping my coffee, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had here, a feeling of Danish 'hygge' settling over me, a sense of contentment and connection.
After breakfast, we set off to visit the Huay Pu Keng Kayan Village. The drive itself was scenic, winding through lush landscapes and offering glimpses of rural Thai life. Arriving at the village, we took a short boat ride across the river to reach the community. The Kayan people, originally from Myanmar, are known for their distinctive brass neck rings, a tradition that has both fascinated and sparked debate.

Walking through the village, we were greeted by the sight of women selling their handmade crafts. I purchased a beautiful woven scarf, a tangible reminder of our visit and a way to support the local economy. While observing their way of life, I felt a sense of respect and admiration for their resilience and cultural pride.
Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences come from simply observing and appreciating the lives of others.
Next on our itinerary was Wat Luang, a temple that stands as a testament to Mae Hong Son's rich history and architectural heritage. As we approached the temple, its intricate details and serene atmosphere immediately captivated us. The temple's design reflects a blend of Thai Yai and Burmese influences, showcasing the region's unique cultural identity. We took our time exploring the temple grounds, admiring the ornate carvings, the towering chedi, and the peaceful ambiance that permeated the air. It was a moment of quiet contemplation, a chance to reflect on the spiritual significance of this place and its importance to the local community.

For lunch, we ventured to Mae Hong Son Islamic Restaurant, a local favorite known for its authentic Halal cuisine. We savored flavorful dishes like chicken biryani and beef noodle soup, each bite a burst of exotic spices and local ingredients. It was a delightful culinary experience, a chance to explore the diverse flavors of Mae Hong Son and connect with the local culture through food.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in a bit of self-care and visited Cross Tattoo Studio. While I didn't get a tattoo myself, I was intrigued by the artistry and creativity on display. It was a glimpse into the local art scene, a reminder that even in a small town like Mae Hong Son, there's a vibrant community of artists and creatives. Hans, ever the supportive husband, waited patiently for me, enjoying a cup of coffee at a nearby cafe.

Our final dinner in Mae Hong Son was at Than Hong Son Restaurant, a popular spot known for its traditional Thai dishes. We feasted on local delicacies, savoring the rich flavors and spices that have defined our culinary journey through Thailand. It was a perfect ending to our trip, a chance to reminisce about our adventures and celebrate the memories we've made.

As we prepare to leave Mae Hong Son, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had here. From the serene landscapes to the vibrant culture, this town has captured our hearts in a unique way. We'll cherish the memories we've made, the people we've met, and the lessons we've learned.
Tomorrow, we embark on our journey back to Berlin, carrying with us the warmth and beauty of Thailand. While I'm excited to return home, a part of me will always remain in Mae Hong Son, a place that has taught me the importance of slowing down, appreciating the simple things, and embracing the beauty of different cultures. I’m so glad I got to experience this with Hans, and I know we will both cherish these memories forever.
Looking back on our 11-day adventure, a few essentials truly stood out. My eco-friendly travel backpack was a lifesaver, helping me stay organized while minimizing our environmental impact. And, of course, my camera was indispensable for capturing the stunning landscapes and vibrant culture. I am a bit sad that I forgot to bring bug spray and a travel guidebook on Mae Hong Son, but I guess that means we will have to come back!
Mae Hong Son, with its tranquil beauty and cultural richness, has been the perfect ending to our Thai adventure. As we bid farewell to this charming town, we carry with us memories that will last a lifetime. From the serene landscapes to the warm hospitality of the locals, Mae Hong Son has left an indelible mark on our hearts. I can't wait to share more stories and photos from our journey, inspiring others to explore the hidden gems of Thailand and embrace the beauty of sustainable travel.
Reflecting on this trip, I’m reminded of something Eddie Huang, the author and chef, once said about feeling adrift in a country where he has always been in a minority. While our experience in Thailand was vastly different, there were moments when I felt a similar sense of being an outsider looking in, trying to understand and appreciate a culture that was not my own. It’s these moments of reflection that often make travel so enriching, challenging us to step outside our comfort zones and see the world from a different perspective.
And as we prepare for our next adventure, I'm already dreaming of new destinations and experiences, eager to continue exploring the world with Hans by my side. Until next time, tak for reisen (thanks for the journey)!
P.S. I am so excited to be going home to Berlin, but I know I will miss all of the delicious Thai food. I think I might even try to make some of my favorite dishes when I get home! I have heard of Din Tai Fung, a world-renowned Taiwanese restaurant that specializes in soup dumplings and noodles, and I am excited to try to make some of their dishes at home. Maybe I can even open my own restaurant one day!
Also, I am excited to see what is going on in Pattaya! I read that the Marina International Tattoo Festival 2025 is kicking off today in Pattaya, and I am so bummed that I am missing it! I guess I will just have to get a tattoo in Berlin!
As I reflect on my travels, I’m reminded of Lin Heung Tea House, a historic Cantonese restaurant in Hong Kong known for its traditional dim sum. The chaos and tradition of the dim sum carts, the shouting aunties, and the eager diners create a unique and memorable experience. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best culinary experiences are found in the most unexpected places, and that food is often about more than just the taste – it’s about the atmosphere, the people, and the memories created.
