Today was a day of conquering peaks, both literal and metaphorical, here in Gros Morne National Park.
The crisp January air invigorated us as we set out to tackle some of the park's most iconic trails. With Hans and our friends by my side, I knew we were in for an unforgettable day. It was a day filled with challenging hikes, breathtaking views, and the kind of camaraderie that only comes from sharing incredible experiences in the great outdoors.

First on our agenda was the legendary Gros Morne Mountain Hiking Trail. Knowing that the trails aren't maintained in the winter, we were prepared for a challenge. The forecast predicted wind, with average highs of 24°F (-4°C) and lows of 13°F (-10°C). Bundled in layers of warm clothing, we started our ascent. The snow-covered path crunched beneath our hiking boots, each step a testament to our determination.
As we climbed, the views became increasingly spectacular. The stark, snow-dusted landscape stretched out before us, a panorama of rugged beauty. I must admit, there were moments when the steep inclines and biting wind made me question my sanity, but the shared laughter and encouragement from my companions kept me going. Hans, ever the supportive husband, reminded me of our training cycling through Berlin's parks – apparently, those hills *did* prepare me for something!

Reaching the summit felt like a true victory. We were rewarded with a 360-degree view of Gros Morne's majestic wilderness. The wind howled around us, but we stood firm, taking in the awe-inspiring scenery.
I snapped countless photos, trying to capture the grandeur of the moment, but no image could truly do it justice. It was a moment to be savored, a memory etched in our minds forever.
As we descended, the sun began its slow descent, casting long shadows across the snow-covered terrain. The mountain was challenging, but the views were worth it.

Sometimes, the most challenging paths lead to the most rewarding views.

After our mountain adventure, we drove to the Tablelands Trail, a stark contrast to the lush greenery we'd seen earlier in the trip. This unique landscape, formed by the Earth's exposed mantle, is a geological wonder. The rusty orange color of the rocks against the white snow created an otherworldly scene. The trail itself was relatively easy, a welcome change after the strenuous climb up Gros Morne Mountain. We strolled along the path, marveling at the unusual plant life and the vast, open spaces.
The wind was strong here, whipping across the barren landscape, but we were well-prepared with our layers of clothing.
It was fascinating to walk on a part of the Earth's mantle, a tangible connection to the planet's deep history.

Our final hike of the day was the Lookout Hills Trail. Starting from the Discovery Centre parking lot in Woody Point, this trail promised panoramic vistas. The climb was steady, taking us through a forest before emerging onto a highland plateau. The views from the top of Partridgeberry Hill were indeed spectacular, encompassing Bonne Bay, Gros Morne Mountain, and the Tablelands. It was the perfect vantage point to reflect on the day's adventures.

After a day of hiking, we were ravenous. For breakfast, we enjoyed Taste, known for its sustainably sourced, locally grown food. I had the savory oatmeal, while Hans opted for the smoked salmon eggs benny. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our day of hiking. For lunch, we stopped at Buoy & Arrow Restaurant and Suites, where we enjoyed delicious meals with options ranging from wild game, local seafood, and classic comfort food. The restaurant's harborfront location in Rocky Harbour offered incredible ocean views.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at the Sunset Cafe for dinner. This cozy coffee shop in Rocky Harbour served up delicious homemade meals and fresh-baked desserts. I savored a hearty bowl of seafood chowder, while Hans indulged in the partridgeberry crumble. The cafe had a welcoming atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a long day of exploring. We finished the evening at Western Newfoundland Brewing Co., where we sampled some of their delicious craft beers. Although they don't have a taproom, we were able to find their beers at a local bar. It was the perfect way to end our day of trails, triumphs, and tasty treats.
