Island Musings: A Day of Art and Coastal Calm

Today was a day of wandering, wondering, and wholeheartedly embracing the art that makes Naoshima so unique. After a delightful breakfast, I set out to explore more of this captivating island, camera and sketchbook in tow, ready to capture the essence of Naoshima's blend of art and nature.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Yuunagi. The restaurant is conveniently located near the port and rental cycle shops. I savored a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. Sipping on green tea, I planned my route, eager to see what artistic wonders awaited me.

First on my list was the Seaside Gallery. Designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, it is located in a terraced plaza overlooking the ocean at Benesse House Museum. The walk there was an experience in itself, a pleasant stroll along the coast with the Seto Inland Sea sparkling under the morning sun. The gallery's long, narrow layout, hugging the natural topography, was striking. Inside, the art felt secondary to the stunning views, but the thematic artworks reflecting the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea added to the experience. The way the light flooded through the large east-facing opening was simply breathtaking. I spent a good hour there, simply soaking in the atmosphere and sketching the interplay of light and shadow.

Leaving the Seaside Gallery, I decided to visit the Red Pumpkin. As I approached Miyanoura Port, the familiar sight of Yayoi Kusama's Red Pumpkin came into view. Even though I had seen it upon arrival, experiencing it in the daylight was a different kind of magic. The contrast of the vibrant red against the blue sky and sea was striking. I joined the queue of visitors waiting to step inside, eager to experience the world through Kusama's dotted lens.

Art doesn't need to be locked away in galleries to be profound; it can sit by the sea, fade in the rain, glow in the sunset—and still move us, perhaps more than ever.

Inside the pumpkin, the world transformed into a playful, distorted reality. Sunlight streamed through the polka-dot openings, casting dancing patterns on the interior walls. It was a whimsical, almost childlike experience, and I couldn't help but smile. I spent some time simply sitting inside, watching the light shift and change, feeling a sense of connection to both the art and the island.

For lunch, I headed to APRON CAFE. This charming cafe is known for its fresh, local ingredients and healthy options. I opted for the spicy chickpea curry with mixed rice and a side of fresh salad. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of spice and freshness, and it was evident that the ingredients were of the highest quality. The staff were incredibly friendly, adding to the overall cozy atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to refuel after a morning of art exploration.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Mikazukishoten. I had read about their specialty coffee and unique souvenirs, and I was eager to check it out. The coffee stand was indeed charming, a small, unassuming building with a cozy atmosphere. I ordered an iced latte, made with their original blend, and it was divine – rich, smooth, and perfectly balanced. I also browsed their selection of local crafts, eventually settling on a small, hand-painted ceramic dish as a memento of my time on Naoshima. I chatted with the owner for a while, learning about his passion for coffee and his love for the island. It was these small, personal interactions that made my trip so special.

As evening approached, I decided to try Raumen Tsumu for dinner. The restaurant is a small local spot. I ordered the spicy curry mince ramen. It was delicious, with the perfect amount of spice and flavorful noodles. The lady serving and cooking was very kind and maintained a smile the whole time! It was a great experience and the food was delicious.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into the Honmura district, exploring the Art House Project and the Honmura Lounge & Archive. I'm particularly excited to see the Art House Project: Haisha, a transformed dental clinic that sounds both intriguing and thought-provoking. I might stop by Akaito Coffee for breakfast before heading out. And in the evening, I'm considering checking out Kon'nichiwa, a local bar, for a taste of Naoshima's nightlife.

As I reflect on today, I'm struck by the way Naoshima seamlessly blends art and life. It's not just about visiting museums; it's about experiencing art in the everyday, in the landscape, in the food, and in the people. It's a place that nourishes the soul and inspires creativity, and I'm so grateful to be here.

The sun sets over the Seto Inland Sea, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. I'm sitting on the porch of My Lodge Naoshima, sipping a cup of tea and listening to the gentle lapping of the waves. The air is filled with the scent of salt and pine, and a sense of peace settles over me. It's moments like these that make travel so rewarding, the quiet moments of reflection and connection that stay with you long after you've left a place.
