Whispers of the Island

Naoshima continues to surprise me with its seamless blend of art and everyday life. Today was a day of quiet contemplation, exploring the spiritual side of the island and encountering one of its most iconic symbols. It's amazing how art can transform a place, making you see the world in a completely new light. I couldn't wait to get started, sketchbook in hand, ready to capture the essence of this unique island.

I started my day with a hearty breakfast at maimai. The cafe was buzzing with fellow art enthusiasts, all eager to start their day of exploration. I opted for their famous Naoshima burger, a delicious combination of fried local fish and homemade tartar sauce. It was the perfect fuel for a day of walking and contemplation, and the cozy atmosphere of maimai was a great way to start the morning. It reminded me of some of the cozy cafes back in Berlin, where Hans and I often spend our weekends.

Fueled up, I headed towards the Art House Project, specifically to visit Go'o Shrine. This project is scattered throughout the Honmura district, turning traditional houses into contemporary art installations. It’s a brilliant way to integrate art into the community and give visitors a glimpse into the island's history. The walk through Honmura was charming, with locals going about their daily routines amidst the art. It felt like stepping into a living, breathing art piece.

Go'o Shrine itself was a revelation. Perched on a hill overlooking the sea, it's a unique blend of traditional Shinto architecture and modern art. Designed by Hiroshi Sugimoto, the shrine incorporates a glass staircase leading down to an underground chamber. The sunlight filtering through the glass created an ethereal atmosphere, a space for quiet reflection. It was a truly immersive experience, blending the sacred with the contemporary.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

The underground chamber was particularly striking. The contrast between the bright sunlight above and the cool darkness below created a sense of mystery and intrigue. I spent a long time there, simply sitting and contemplating the interplay of light and shadow. It was a moment of profound peace, a reminder of the beauty that can be found in simplicity. It also made me think about my own spiritual journey, how I find moments of peace and reflection in my busy life in Berlin.

Leaving the shrine, I felt a sense of calm and clarity. The Art House Project is a testament to Naoshima's dedication to integrating art into everyday life, creating spaces that encourage reflection and contemplation. It’s a truly unique experience, one that I’ll carry with me long after I leave the island.

For lunch, I decided to try Chikurin, a local restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the island's culinary delights. I opted for a set meal, a delicious assortment of local seafood and vegetables. It was a true taste of Naoshima, a reminder of the island's rich natural resources. It was very different from the German food I am used to, but it was a welcome change.

After lunch, I made my way to the iconic Yellow Pumpkin. This sculpture by Yayoi Kusama is perhaps the most recognizable symbol of Naoshima, a giant yellow pumpkin covered in black polka dots, sitting on a pier jutting out into the sea. It's a whimsical and playful piece, a stark contrast to the serene atmosphere of Go'o Shrine.

The Yellow Pumpkin was even more striking in person than in photographs. The vibrant yellow color popped against the blue of the sea and sky, creating a stunning visual contrast. I spent some time walking around the sculpture, taking in its unique shape and design. It was a fun and playful experience, a reminder that art can be both thought-provoking and joyful.

As I admired the pumpkin, I couldn't help but think about Kusama's artistic vision. Her use of polka dots and bright colors is so distinctive, creating a world that is both familiar and strange. The Yellow Pumpkin is a perfect example of her unique style, a piece that is both instantly recognizable and deeply engaging. It also made me think about the street art scene in Berlin, how artists use public spaces to create works that are both accessible and thought-provoking.

Before dinner, I decided to do some shopping at the Art Island Center. It’s more than just a shop; it's an art and research center, a gallery, and a bookshop all rolled into one. I found some unique art books and stationery, perfect souvenirs to remind me of my time on Naoshima. The center also had a small gallery showcasing local artists, giving me a glimpse into the island's vibrant art scene. I ended up buying a small print by a local artist, a beautiful depiction of the Seto Inland Sea. It will be a perfect addition to my collection back in Berlin.

For dinner, I chose Issen, a restaurant known for its traditional Kaiseki cuisine. It was a culinary experience, a multi-course meal that emphasized seasonal ingredients and meticulous presentation. Each dish was a work of art, a testament to the chef's skill and creativity. The restaurant itself was beautiful, with stunning views of the sea and contemporary art pieces adorning the walls. It was the perfect way to end a day of art and exploration, a moment of pure indulgence.

As I savored each course, I reflected on the day's experiences. From the spiritual sanctuary of Go'o Shrine to the playful whimsy of the Yellow Pumpkin, Naoshima had once again surprised and delighted me. The island's unique blend of art and nature is truly captivating, creating a space that is both inspiring and serene. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this special place, to immerse myself in its art and culture.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Seaside Gallery and the Red Pumpkin. I’m also looking forward to exploring the local shops, like Mikazukishoten, and trying some new restaurants. Naoshima continues to unfold its treasures, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Good night from Naoshima!
