Day 1: Diving into the Art of Naoshima
Naoshima Island, here I am! After a long journey from Berlin, I've finally arrived at this art mecca, ready to soak in all the beauty and creativity it has to offer. The ferry ride from Okayama was smooth, and as the island came into view, I could already sense the unique atmosphere that makes Naoshima so special. The air is thick with anticipation, and the promise of artistic discovery hangs heavy. I'm eager to see what this island has in store for me.
My first stop was to fuel up for the day at APRON CAFE in Honmura. This charming little spot is tucked away in a traditional Japanese building, and I was immediately drawn to its cozy atmosphere. I opted for the seasonal lunch set, which featured fresh, local ingredients. The cafe is known for its commitment to using local produce, reflecting the island's dedication to sustainability. As I enjoyed my meal, I couldn't help but feel a sense of calm wash over me, setting the perfect tone for my artistic adventure.

With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I headed to the Benesse House Museum. Designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, the museum itself is a work of art, seamlessly blending with the natural landscape. The museum combines the functions of an art gallery and a hotel. As I wandered through the halls, I was captivated by the diverse collection of contemporary art, including works by Gerhard Richter and David Hockney. The museum also features site-specific installations that interact with the surrounding environment, blurring the lines between art and nature. I even popped into the Benesse House Shop to pick up a few art books and unique souvenirs.

Art doesn't change things. It offers ways of seeing.
After spending a few hours at the Benesse House Museum, I made my way to the Chichu Art Museum, another architectural masterpiece by Tadao Ando. This museum is built almost entirely underground, with natural light illuminating the artworks in surprising and delightful ways. The museum houses a small but impressive collection of works by Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria. Monet's Water Lilies glowed under the ambient light, creating a serene and immersive experience. Turrell's light installations challenged my perception, while De Maria's Time/Timeless/No Time was a powerful and thought-provoking piece. The way Ando uses natural light to enhance the art is simply breathtaking. It felt like I was in a futuristic cave discovering relics from the past.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I treated myself to dinner at New Olympia, a local sushi restaurant. The restaurant has a tranquil and traditional ambiance with tatami floors adding to the overall dining experience. This cozy, family-run establishment is known for its fresh, homemade Japanese meals and sushi. I opted for the chef's specialties, a multi-course meal featuring an array of seasonal dishes. Each piece of sushi was expertly crafted, and the flavors were simply divine. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with art and exploration.

As I reflect on my first day on Naoshima Island, I'm filled with a sense of wonder and inspiration. The island's unique blend of art, architecture, and nature has already captivated me, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I'm particularly excited about visiting the Art House Project: Minamidera and the Lee Ufan Museum. And maybe I'll treat myself to a drink at Bar SARU in the evening. For now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of artistic discovery.
Naoshima is truly a special place, and I'm so grateful to be here, experiencing its beauty and creativity firsthand. I can already tell that this solo art adventure will be one for the books. Goodnight from Naoshima!
Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of the island's unique offerings, including the Art House Project: Minamidera and the Lee Ufan Museum. Perhaps I'll even unwind with a drink at Bar SARU in the evening. For now, it's time to rest and prepare for another day of artistic exploration.
P.S. I almost forgot! I was so focused on the art that I completely forgot to buy some travel-sized art supplies. I'll have to make a note to pick some up tomorrow. And a reusable water bottle would definitely come in handy in this summer heat!
Naoshima's allure isn't just in its art; it's in the seamless blend of creativity and nature. It's a place where every corner turned reveals a new perspective, a fresh inspiration. The island whispers to the soul, inviting introspection and a deeper connection with the world around us. It's a reminder that art isn't confined to museums; it's a living, breathing entity that permeates every aspect of our lives.
