Day 2: Delving Deeper into Naoshima's Soul
Today was a day of profound artistic immersion, a journey into the heart of Naoshima's unique blend of art, architecture, and contemplative spaces. I found myself reflecting on the interplay between light and darkness, the tangible and the intangible, and the ever-present dialogue between nature and human creation. These experiences weren't just about seeing art; they were about feeling it, and letting it reshape my understanding of the world.
My day began, as all good days should, with a hearty breakfast at Café Ippo. Tucked away near the Art House Project area, this charming café felt like stepping into someone's home. The aroma of freshly brewed Japanese coffee filled the air, mingling with the sweet scent of traditional snacks. A lovely elderly Japanese lady greeted me with a warm smile, making me feel instantly welcome. I savored a cup of their meticulously brewed coffee while enjoying the tranquil view outside. It was the perfect way to prepare for a day of artistic exploration.

First on my itinerary was the Art House Project: Minamidera. This wasn't just another museum visit; it was an experience that challenged my perceptions. Designed by the celebrated architect Tadao Ando, Minamidera is a fusion of contemporary art and traditional Japanese architecture. The main attraction is a light installation by American artist James Turrell. Entering the building, I was guided into a pitch-black room. The compère, dressed in black, explained that I needed to feel my way along the right-hand wall until I reached a bench. He also mentioned that 11% of people are afraid of the dark.

As I sat in the darkness, I felt a sense of disorientation, a complete absence of visual stimuli. Slowly, ever so slowly, my eyes began to adjust. Faint shapes emerged from the blackness, and then, a subtle, ethereal light began to materialize. It was an incredible sensation, like witnessing the birth of light itself. The experience was both unsettling and deeply moving, a reminder of the power of perception and the beauty that can be found even in the absence of light.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
After the intense experience at Minamidera, I needed a moment to gather my thoughts. Lunch at Cin.na.mon provided the perfect respite. This stylish café, a short walk from Miyanoura Port, offered a relaxed atmosphere and a delicious menu. I opted for their famous Naoshima curry, a rich and flavorful dish that had been simmered for over six hours. It was the ideal comfort food after such a profound artistic encounter. The cafe is located in a renovated traditional Japanese house, and it has a cozy, inviting atmosphere. It's the perfect place to relax and enjoy a meal after a long day of exploring the island.

In the afternoon, I made my way to the Lee Ufan Museum. Situated between the Benesse House and the Chichu Art Museum, the walk itself was a journey through Naoshima's stunning natural landscape. The museum, another Tadao Ando masterpiece, is a semi-subterranean structure that blends seamlessly with its surroundings. It's a place where art, architecture, and nature converge in perfect harmony.

The Lee Ufan Museum is dedicated to the work of Lee Ufan, a renowned Korean-born artist and philosopher who was a leading figure in the Mono-ha movement of the 1960s and 70s. The museum's minimalist design perfectly complements Lee Ufan's art, which often explores the relationship between the natural and the man-made. The exhibits feature minimalist pieces, some as simple as a single brushstroke or a gradient of color. The museum invites contemplation and introspection. The building itself, with its geometrically shaped reinforced concrete, harmonizes with the natural surroundings, creating a serene and meditative space.
As I wandered through the museum, I was struck by the simplicity and elegance of Lee Ufan's work. His art invites you to slow down, to observe, and to reflect on the world around you. It's a reminder that beauty can be found in the most unassuming of places, and that sometimes, less is truly more.
For dinner, I decided to try Ebisukamo, a classic izakaya in Honmura village. This cozy restaurant felt like dining in a friend's living room. The menu was filled with mostly seafood-based dishes, prepared simply and deliciously. I sampled some of their specialties, including clams in sake and yellowtail sashimi. The sake menu was impressive, and the wait staff were happy to recommend pairings. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, a perfect way to end a day of artistic exploration.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I decided to check out Bar SARU. This quirky little bar had a laid-back vibe, with surf videos playing on the TV and a soundtrack of mellow tunes. The ceiling was covered in graffiti and signatures, adding to the bar's unique character. I ordered a local beer and chatted with the friendly bartender. It was the perfect place to unwind and soak in the atmosphere of Naoshima.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Naoshima is more than just an island; it's a sanctuary for the soul. It's a place where art and nature intertwine, where you can lose yourself in contemplation and find yourself anew. As I prepare for tomorrow, I am excited to visit the Art House Project: Go'o Shrine and the Yellow Pumpkin, I feel a sense of anticipation for what new discoveries await.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Go'o Shrine and the iconic Yellow Pumpkin. I also intend to explore the Art Island Center shop for some unique souvenirs. I'm eager to see what other hidden gems Naoshima has in store for me.
I am also reminded that I need to pick up some travel-sized art supplies and a reusable water bottle – those TripEssentialsForgotten are starting to feel a bit essential!
