A Day of Discovery on Naoshima

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the everyday rhythms of Naoshima, blending art with the simple pleasures of island life. It's amazing how a change of pace and scenery can bring fresh perspectives, even when you're just observing the ordinary. Liam and I were both eager to see what the day would bring, and Naoshima certainly didn't disappoint.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Yuunagi. The restaurant is conveniently located near Miyanoura Port. I opted for the Flounder Simmered Set Meal, eager to try a local specialty. Liam, ever the adventurous one, chose the Naoshima Salmon, recently introduced to the menu. The restaurant had a cozy, local vibe, and it was clear that many of the patrons were regulars. It was a great way to start the day, fueling up with delicious food before heading out to explore. The fried flounder was perfectly crispy, and Liam enjoyed his salmon as well.

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set off for Naoshima Fishing Park. Neither of us are avid anglers, but the idea of spending some time by the sea, enjoying the peaceful surroundings, was too appealing to resist. The park itself is beautifully maintained, with lush greenery and stunning coastal views. We rented some basic equipment and found a quiet spot on the pier. While we didn't catch anything substantial, the experience was incredibly relaxing. Just casting a line and watching the waves was therapeutic. I spent some time capturing the scenery with my camera, while Liam tried his luck at coaxing a fish to bite. It was a lovely way to connect with nature and appreciate the slower pace of island life.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

After a couple of hours at the fishing park, we decided to delve back into Naoshima's art scene. Our next stop was Walking Ark in Ogicho. This open-air museum features an array of sculptures and artistic exhibits that blend seamlessly with the natural landscape. As we strolled along the curated paths, we were struck by how the art reflected themes of community, nature, and culture. One particular sculpture caught my eye – a piece made from recycled materials that seemed to symbolize the island's commitment to sustainability. Liam was fascinated by another piece, a large metal structure that resembled a ship, its curves mirroring the waves of the nearby sea. The Walking Ark provided a thought-provoking experience, reminding us that art can be found in the most unexpected places.

Lunchtime found us at Raumen Tsumu, a local favorite known for its affordable and delicious ramen. This casual eatery is popular with locals, which is always a good sign. I opted for the classic udon curry, while Liam chose the fried udon. The portions were generous, and the flavors were comforting and satisfying. It was the perfect midday meal to recharge our batteries before continuing our exploration. The staff were friendly and welcoming, adding to the overall charm of the place. I was also happy to see they had vegan options available.

Our afternoon was dedicated to exploring the Honmura district, starting with a visit to the Honmura Lounge & Archive. This space serves as both an information center and a ticket vendor for the Art House Project, making it a great starting point for exploring the area. The lounge itself is housed in a renovated agricultural cooperative supermarket, retaining much of its original architecture. Ryue Nishizawa designed the space, which now sells tickets for the Art House Project, books, and related goods. We purchased our tickets and gathered some information about the various art houses scattered throughout the village. The friendly staff provided a map and some helpful tips, making us feel well-prepared for our self-guided tour. I was particularly interested in the Art House Project, which involves artists transforming empty houses into works of art. It’s a brilliant concept that breathes new life into the community while preserving its history and memories.

As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Gumbo Hut Shioya. This unique restaurant offers Cajun Creole cuisine in the heart of Naoshima, which sounded like an intriguing culinary adventure. The owner, Buddy, is incredibly welcoming and creates a lively atmosphere with great music from the 50s and 60s. I ordered the classic sausage and chicken gumbo, while Liam opted for a vegetarian version. The gumbo was rich, flavorful, and surprisingly authentic, transporting us to Louisiana with every bite. The sides, including coleslaw and sweetcorn, were equally delicious. It was a delightful and unexpected dining experience that we both thoroughly enjoyed.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to Naoshima Yokocho, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere. The bar offers a variety of drinks and small dishes, making it a perfect spot for a casual nightcap. We ordered a couple of local beers and soaked in the ambiance. The crowd was a mix of locals and tourists, all enjoying the laid-back vibe and friendly conversation. It was a great way to unwind after a day of exploring and reflect on all the wonderful things we had seen and done. I was mindful of the reviews mentioning bonito flakes and specified that I was vegan.

As we walked back to My Lodge Naoshima, the island was quiet and peaceful. The stars were out, and the gentle sound of the waves lapping against the shore created a soothing ambiance. It was a moment to reflect on everything we had experienced today, the art we had seen, the food we had tasted, and the memories we had made. Naoshima has a way of slowing you down, making you appreciate the simple things in life. The blend of art and nature is truly inspiring, and I feel grateful to be able to experience it with Liam. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings, as we plan to visit the Seaside Gallery and the Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu. I also look forward to exploring the Benesse House Park. Good night from Naoshima!
