Art and Adventure: Discovering Naoshima Island
Day 9: Whispers of the Soul: Art and Remembrance on Teshima and Naoshima
Discover the serene beauty and thought-provoking art of Teshima and Naoshima, where whispers of the past meet contemporary expression.
Echoes of the Day
Today was a day of profound reflection and artistic immersion, as Liam and I journeyed through the captivating landscapes of Teshima and Naoshima, encountering art that spoke to the soul and memories that lingered in the air. From whispering forests to galleries born from repurposed spaces, each experience was a unique exploration of life, loss, and the enduring power of human connection.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Nagomi. The simple, traditional Japanese fare was the perfect fuel for the day's adventures. I always appreciate starting the day with a meal that feels both nourishing and authentic, setting a grounded tone for whatever explorations lie ahead.
Our first destination was Teshima, a short ferry ride from Naoshima. We were eager to experience the renowned Teshima 8 Million Lab. The name itself, referencing the myriad of gods believed to inhabit all things in Shinto religion, hinted at the mystical journey that awaited us. Conceived by artist Sputniko!, the lab aims to create new members of Yaoyorozu, blending science and art into a unique mythology.

As we approached the lab, the architecture struck me. Retaining the exterior of an old house, the interior opened into an expansive, column-less space, a testament to innovative design. The blend of old and new, of tradition and innovation, mirrored the lab's core concept of merging mythology with modern science. Inside, we explored the exhibits, each prompting us to consider the future of nature and our beliefs in an age of advancing technology. The highlight was the shrine dedicated to a genetically engineered silkworm, a creation born from Sputniko!'s artwork, 'Red Silk of Fate - Tamaki's Crush'. It was a thought-provoking experience, blurring the lines between the natural and the artificial, the sacred and the scientific.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Leaving the Teshima 8 Million Lab, we ventured into La forêt des murmures (Whispering Forest). This installation, nestled halfway up Mt. Danyama, was a truly moving experience. Four hundred wind chimes hung delicately in the forest, each bearing the names of loved ones inscribed by past visitors. As the breeze rustled through the trees, the chimes created a symphony of soft, melancholic melodies, each note a whisper of remembrance.

Liam and I wandered through the forest, reading the names and reflecting on the lives they represented. The act of strangers commemorating their loved ones in this serene space was incredibly touching. We found a quiet spot and, after a moment of contemplation, added our own dedication, etching the name of my grandmother, Astrid, onto a transparent strip to be hung among the others. It felt like a small but meaningful gesture, a way to keep her memory alive in this tranquil haven.
After Teshima's poignant embrace, we returned to Naoshima for lunch at Luke's Table. Nestled within My Lodge Naoshima, the restaurant offered stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea. The Italian cuisine, crafted with local ingredients, was a delightful change of pace. I savored a pasta dish featuring fresh seafood, while Liam opted for a hearty breakfast option. The combination of exquisite food and breathtaking scenery made for a truly memorable meal.

Our final destination for the day was the Miyanoura Gallery 6. This gallery, located in the Miyanoura district, was once a Pachinko parlor. Architect Taira Nishizawa transformed the space into a vibrant art hub where visitors and locals could gather and relax. The original facade of the Pachinko parlor was preserved, a nod to the building's history and a way to maintain a sense of familiarity for the local community.

Inside, the gallery was bathed in natural sunlight, filtered through hundreds of louvers on the ceiling. The effect was mesmerizing, creating an ever-changing play of light and shadow that enhanced the artwork on display. The current exhibition featured a collection of stories gathered from residents of the surrounding islands. Each story, written on wooden placards, recounted strange or unexplainable experiences, offering a glimpse into the local culture and beliefs. I found myself captivated by these tales, each one a window into the lives and traditions of the islanders.
Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, we stopped by Mikazukishoten, a charming coffee stand known for its exceptional coffee and handmade souvenirs. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air as we stepped inside. I ordered a latte, while Liam chose a matcha. Sipping our drinks, we browsed the unique souvenirs, each reflecting the island's artistic spirit. I picked up a small, hand-painted ceramic pumpkin as a memento of our time on Naoshima.

For dinner, we chose Yuunagi, a restaurant located near the ferry terminal. The restaurant specializes in dishes made with local flounder, a regional delicacy. Liam ordered the flounder set meal, while I opted for the deep-fried chicken set. The food was simple but delicious, a perfect way to end a day of artistic exploration.

As we walked back to our accommodation, the island was bathed in the soft glow of twilight. The air was filled with a sense of peace and tranquility, a feeling that permeated every corner of Naoshima. Today was a day of profound connection – to art, to nature, and to the memories of those we hold dear. The whispers of the wind chimes, the stories etched in wood, the flavors of the local cuisine – all these experiences wove together to create a tapestry of remembrance and reflection.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Naoshima's artistic treasures, including the Gokurakuji Temple and the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower. We're also looking forward to trying some local ramen at Raumen Tsumu and ending the day with a drink at Little Plum. As the sun sets on another day in this enchanting corner of the world, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such beauty and depth. I am also grateful that Liam is here to experience this with me. These are the moments that make our adventures so special.
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart.”
Until tomorrow,
Mette
