Exploring the Enchanted Forests of Yakushima
Day 5: Chasing Waterfalls and Island Treasures in Yakushima
Discover the majestic Ohko and Senpiro Falls, savor local cuisine, and find unique crafts in Yakushima's enchanting landscapes.
Whispers of Water: A Day of Cascades and Crafts
Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Yakushima's waterfalls and the charm of its local artistry. I set out to witness the power of Ohko Waterfall and the serene elegance of Senpiro Falls, two of the island's most iconic natural wonders. Beyond the cascades, I was eager to immerse myself in the local culture, sampling the island's cuisine and discovering unique crafts. It promised to be a day of sensory delights, and Yakushima certainly delivered.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Michikusa, a cozy restaurant recommended by several locals. The ambiance was warm and inviting, filled with the chatter of locals starting their day. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, perfectly steamed rice, and Yakushima-grown pickles. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards Ohko Waterfall. The drive itself was a treat, winding through lush forests and offering glimpses of the rugged coastline. As I approached the falls, the air grew cooler, and the sound of rushing water filled the air. The anticipation was palpable.
Ohko Waterfall is truly a sight to behold. Cascading down from a height of 88 meters, the water plunges into an emerald-green pool below, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of power and beauty. I spent a good hour simply standing there, mesmerized by the sheer force of nature. The cool spray on my face was incredibly refreshing, a welcome respite from the humid July air. I managed to capture a few photographs, hoping to convey the grandeur of the falls, but no image could truly capture the feeling of being there.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simple act of witnessing nature's unbridled power and artistry.
After soaking in the majesty of Ohko Waterfall, I continued my journey to Senpiro Falls. This waterfall is different, more subtle in its beauty. Instead of a dramatic plunge, the water flows down a massive granite cliff, creating a sense of serene elegance. The surrounding landscape is equally captivating, with lush greenery clinging to the rocks and ancient cedar trees standing sentinel nearby.

The name Senpiro, meaning a thousand fathoms, is derived from the massive size of the surrounding rock face. Legend has it that the rock is so large it would take a thousand people holding hands to cover it. Standing at the observation point, I could certainly appreciate the scale of the natural wonder. I took my time here, simply breathing in the fresh air and allowing the tranquility of the surroundings to wash over me. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple joys of connecting with nature.
By lunchtime, I had worked up quite an appetite. I decided to head to Iso no Kaori, a local restaurant known for its fresh seafood. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. I managed to snag a seat at the counter and ordered their specialty: a sashimi platter featuring the catch of the day. The fish was incredibly fresh, the flavors vibrant and clean. It was a true taste of Yakushima, a testament to the island's rich marine bounty. It was delicious, and I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic local cuisine. I made sure to try some flying fish, a local delicacy, and it was surprisingly delightful. The waitress kindly explained the different types of fish on the platter, enhancing the experience.
After lunch, I decided to indulge in a bit of shopping. I had heard about Gallery KIANU, a local shop showcasing the work of Yakushima artists and craftspeople. I was eager to see what treasures I could find.

The gallery was a delightful surprise, filled with unique and beautiful creations. From handcrafted pottery to intricate woodwork, each piece reflected the island's natural beauty and artistic spirit. I spent a good hour browsing the collection, admiring the skill and creativity of the local artisans. I ended up purchasing a small, hand-painted ceramic bowl, a perfect reminder of my time in Yakushima. It was a struggle to choose just one item, as everything was so beautiful and unique.
As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Yakushima Gallery Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant is known for its innovative cuisine, blending local ingredients with international flavors. The ambiance was sophisticated yet relaxed, with soft lighting and gentle music creating a welcoming atmosphere.

I opted for the venison steak, a local specialty. The meat was tender and flavorful, cooked to perfection and served with a medley of seasonal vegetables. It was a truly memorable meal, a fitting end to a day of culinary delights. The restaurant also had a small gallery showcasing local art, adding to the overall experience.
Reflecting on the day, I realized how deeply I was connecting with Yakushima's natural beauty and local culture. The island has a way of slowing you down, of inviting you to appreciate the simple things in life. The rhythm of the water, the scent of the forest, and the warmth of the local people have all contributed to a sense of peace that I haven't felt in a long time.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Ryujin Falls and Yokogawa Valley, continuing my quest to discover the hidden gems of Yakushima. I'm also looking forward to trying breakfast at Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan, lunch at Kotobuki, and dinner at At Pesca, eager to experience more of the island's culinary scene. And perhaps, I'll end the day with a drink at BAR しらはま, soaking in the local nightlife.
Even though I'm traveling solo, I never feel alone here. The island has a way of embracing you, of making you feel like you belong. It's a feeling I'll cherish long after I leave.
I'm also mindful of the essentials I forgot to pack – insect repellent and extra memory cards for my camera. A quick stop at a local shop tomorrow morning will sort that out, ensuring I'm fully prepared for another day of adventure. It's a small reminder that even the most meticulously planned trips can have their hiccups, but it's all part of the adventure, isn't it?
Yakushima is more than just a destination; it's an experience that nourishes the soul. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
The summer heat here in Yakushima is quite intense, but the cool spray from the waterfalls offers a refreshing escape. It's a good reminder to stay hydrated and wear light, breathable clothing.
I'm already looking forward to sharing more stories and photographs from my adventures tomorrow. Until then, sayōnara from Yakushima!
As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, I'm reminded of a quote by John Muir:
In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.
And Yakushima, in its infinite wisdom, continues to prove this true.
Each day here feels like a step deeper into the heart of something ancient and profound, a connection to the earth that I rarely experience in my everyday life back in Canmore. It's a feeling I'm trying to capture, not just in my photographs, but in my memory, to carry with me long after I've left this enchanted island. I wonder what Liam would think of this place. I know he would love the hiking and the raw beauty of the landscape. Perhaps one day, we can return together and explore Yakushima side by side.
Join Mette on a solo adventure to the mystical island of Yakushima, capturing stunning landscapes and connecting with nature's wonders.
