Whispers of the Waterfalls

Today was a day dedicated to the soothing sounds of water and the enchanting scents of Yakushima. I ventured into Yokogawa Valley and Ryujin Falls, two gems nestled in the heart of this island. My plan was to also experience more of Yakushima’s local culture, including its cuisine. It promised to be a day of natural beauty and sensory delights, a true immersion into the soul of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

My morning started with a hearty breakfast at Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan. Finding it was easy enough, and I was ready to dive into some local breakfast cuisine. I decided to try the grilled flying fish – a Yakushima specialty. It was a delightful start to the day, fueling me up for the adventures ahead. I also picked up a small tankan orange juice. Tankan oranges are another local specialty I was keen to try, and the juice was the perfect blend of sweet and tart. It was the ideal fuel for a day of hiking and exploration. I made sure to grab an extra bottle for later!

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off for Yokogawa Valley. The drive itself was stunning, winding through dense forests with glimpses of the coastline. I couldn't help but think of Liam back in Canmore. He would have loved this drive, the way the sunlight filtered through the trees, creating a magical, almost ethereal atmosphere. I made a mental note to bring him here someday. As I arrived, I was immediately struck by the tranquility of the place. The valley is a symphony of emerald green streams, moss-covered rocks, and the gentle murmur of water.

I spent a couple of hours wandering through the valley, camera in hand, trying to capture the essence of this serene landscape. The sunlight danced on the water, creating shimmering patterns that were mesmerizing to watch. I found myself completely lost in the moment, the only sounds the gentle rustling of leaves and the occasional bird call. It was exactly the kind of solitude and connection with nature that I had been craving.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest corners of the world.

After Yokogawa Valley, my next destination was Ryujin Falls. This waterfall is a bit more secluded, requiring a short but rewarding hike through the forest. The trail was narrow and winding, leading me deeper into the heart of Yakushima’s wilderness. As I approached the falls, I could hear the increasing roar of the water, a sign that I was getting close. I had read that Ryujin means Dragon God, and I was eager to see this dragon-like waterfall.

Ryujin Falls, though not the tallest on the island at about 30 meters high, is incredibly beautiful. The water plunges down a rocky cliff into a clear pool below, creating a refreshing spray that misted the air. I spent some time simply sitting on a rock, watching the water cascade down and feeling the cool mist on my face. It was a perfect moment of peace and tranquility.

For lunch, I headed to Kotobuki, a restaurant that came highly recommended for its traditional Japanese cuisine. Getting there was a bit of an adventure in itself, as it's located off the main road and up a winding path. But the effort was well worth it. The restaurant is set in an old wooden house, giving it a charming and authentic feel. Luckily, I had made a reservation in advance, as it is a popular spot and requires booking a few days ahead. The set menu was a delightful culinary journey, showcasing local ingredients and flavors. The owners were incredibly welcoming, making me feel right at home. I savored every bite, appreciating the care and attention that went into each dish.

In the late afternoon, I decided to treat myself to a bit of relaxation. I had heard about BAR しらはま, a cozy spot known for its cocktails and laid-back atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of hiking and exploring. I ordered a local craft beer and sat on the terrace, enjoying the sea breeze and the stunning views of the coastline. The bar had a friendly vibe, and I struck up a conversation with some of the locals, learning more about the island and its culture. It was a great way to end the day, feeling connected to the community and soaking in the beauty of Yakushima.

For dinner, I chose At Pesca, a restaurant that specializes in Italian cuisine with a focus on local ingredients. It was a bit of a departure from the traditional Japanese food I had been eating, but I was curious to see how they would incorporate Yakushima’s unique flavors into Italian dishes. I wasn't disappointed. The pasta was made with locally sourced seafood, and the pizza featured venison, a regional specialty. It was a delicious fusion of cultures, and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm reminded of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simple things in life. Yakushima has a way of doing that to you, stripping away the distractions and allowing you to connect with nature and yourself. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings, with plans to visit the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse and the East China Sea Observatory. I might even stop by YAWARACA “The Scent of Yakushima LAB” to pick up a unique souvenir. I’m looking forward to more exploration and discovery on this enchanting island.
