Exploring the Enchanted Forests of Yakushima
Day 1: First Impressions of Yakushima: A Journey into the Heart of an Ancient Forest
Mette's solo exploration of Yakushima begins! Discover the island's heritage and savor local flavors in this immersive travelogue.
Whispers of the Ancient Forest
The air is thick with humidity and the scent of damp earth as I step off the ferry onto Yakushima. It feels like I've entered another world, a realm where ancient trees whisper secrets to the wind and the spirit of nature reigns supreme. My heart is pounding with anticipation, a mix of excitement and reverence for this UNESCO World Heritage site. This solo adventure is exactly what I needed to reconnect with myself and my craft, and I can already tell that Yakushima will not disappoint.
After arriving at the port and collecting my luggage, I headed straight to the Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center. It seemed like the perfect starting point to get my bearings and learn more about this magical island. The center is located in the Anbo area, and the bus ride there offered my first glimpse of Yakushima's stunning landscapes. The road wound along the coast, revealing glimpses of emerald waters and rocky shores. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as the island's interior rose majestically in the distance, shrouded in mist and mystery.

At the Conservation Center, I was immediately impressed by the wealth of information on display. Exhibits detailed the island's unique ecosystem, its diverse flora and fauna, and the ongoing efforts to protect its natural treasures. I learned about the ancient cedar trees, some of which are over a thousand years old, and the unique wildlife that calls Yakushima home, including the Yakushima macaque and the Yakushika deer. The center also highlighted the importance of sustainable tourism and the need to minimize our impact on this fragile environment. It was inspiring to see the dedication and passion of the people working to preserve Yakushima's natural heritage.

After immersing myself in the exhibits, I decided to explore the local culinary scene. For breakfast, I grabbed a quick bite at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It had a charming, old-school vibe, reminiscent of traditional soba shops. I purchased a meal ticket at the counter and enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal of udon noodles. It was a perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures.

Next on the agenda was a visit to the Yakushima Market, a bustling hub of local produce and crafts. The market was a feast for the senses, with vibrant colors, enticing aromas, and the lively chatter of vendors and shoppers. I wandered through the stalls, admiring the fresh fruits and vegetables, handmade pottery, and intricate woodwork. I picked up a few snacks for my hikes, including some local citrus fruits and a bag of roasted nuts. It was a great opportunity to support the local community and experience the authentic flavors of Yakushima.

For lunch, I ventured to the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant, hoping to sample more of the island's culinary delights. It was a delightful experience, blending local flavors with traditional techniques. The restaurant itself was an experience, offering a space where you can 'see', 'taste', and 'feel' Yakushima. I savored a delicious meal featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. It was a perfect spot to relax and recharge before continuing my exploration.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to the Katagiri Flying Fish Restaurant for dinner. I was eager to try the island's specialty, flying fish, prepared in a unique and innovative way. The restaurant had a charming, rustic ambiance, with wooden beams and soft lighting creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. I ordered the flying fish hitsumabushi, which was highly recommended. It was chopped 'kabayaki' flying fish on rice served in a lacquer ware container called 'Hitsu'. The dish was an absolute delight, with the delicate flavor of the flying fish perfectly complemented by the sweet and savory sauce. The staff were attentive and passionate about their food, adding to the overall experience.

It's July here in Yakushima, and the weather is living up to its reputation. The temperature hovers around 27-30°C (80-86°F), and the humidity is incredibly high. Rain is a frequent visitor, so I'm glad I packed my rain gear. Despite the occasional downpour, the island's beauty shines through, with lush greenery and vibrant colors at every turn. I can see why Yakushima is known for its rainforest climate; it truly feels like a world teeming with life.
Before heading back to my guesthouse, I made a mental note to grab some insect repellent and extra memory cards for my camera tomorrow. I knew I had forgotten something! Tomorrow, I plan to tackle the Shiratani Unsui Gorge and, weather permitting, Jōmon Sugi, the ancient cedar. I’ve heard the gorge is like stepping into a Studio Ghibli film, which, as a fan, I am very excited about. I also intend to dine at Aqua Cafe for breakfast, Hachiman for lunch, and Il Mare for dinner, before finishing the day at Cafe&Bar RainTree.
As I reflect on my first day in Yakushima, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible opportunity. The island's natural beauty, rich culture, and warm hospitality have already captured my heart. I can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow will bring.
I am reminded of a quote by the great nature photographer, Ansel Adams: You don't take a photograph, you make it. And that's precisely what I intend to do here in Yakushima – to make photographs that capture the essence of this magical place and share its beauty with the world.
I’m also reminded of Liam back home. He would have loved this place, especially the hiking trails. I'll have to bring him here someday. For now, I'll continue to explore and document my experiences, sharing them with all of you. Stay tuned for more tales from the enchanted forests of Yakushima. Until tomorrow!
