Finding Beauty in Every Drop & Stitch

The Icelandic landscape continues to surprise and delight, and today was no exception. From the tranquil rush of waterfalls to the comforting embrace of Icelandic wool, it was a day filled with simple pleasures and stunning sights. I set out this morning with a sense of anticipation, eager to explore more of what this incredible island has to offer.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Volcano Huts Húsadalur. The buffet was just what I needed to fuel up for the day’s adventures, offering everything from homemade bread to fresh fruit. Sipping my coffee and watching the early morning light illuminate the valley, I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this serene corner of the world.

First on the agenda was Ægissíðufoss, a waterfall I’d heard whispered about as a hidden gem. It's conveniently located near Hella, making it an easy detour off the Ring Road. The drive itself was lovely, with the Icelandic countryside unfolding before me. Rolling hills, dotted with grazing sheep, stretched out under a sky that seemed to constantly shift between sun and shadow. As I approached Ægissíðufoss, the sound of the water grew louder, building anticipation for the sight that awaited.

The waterfall didn’t disappoint. While not as imposing as some of Iceland's more famous falls, Ægissíðufoss possessed a quiet charm. It flowed gently through a rugged landscape of rocks and grassy fields , creating a peaceful atmosphere perfect for reflection. I spent some time simply watching the water, appreciating the way it sculpted the landscape and the sense of calm it brought. Apparently, it’s also a well-known fishing location, with a salmon ladder to help the fish. I could see why anglers would be drawn to this spot; the combination of natural beauty and the promise of a good catch is irresistible.

Sometimes, the greatest beauty lies not in the grandest spectacles, but in the quiet, unassuming corners of the world.

Next, I set my sights on Skógafoss, another waterfall that I was eager to see. The drive from Ægissíðufoss was relatively short, and soon I found myself in the village of Skógar. As I approached the waterfall, its grandeur became immediately apparent. Skógafoss is much larger than Ægissíðufoss, with a powerful cascade that plunges 60 meters. The spray from the falls created a constant mist, and as the sun peeked through the clouds, a vibrant rainbow arched across the scene.

I climbed the staircase alongside the waterfall to get a view from the top. The climb was a bit strenuous, but the view was worth every step. From above, I could see the Skógá River winding its way through the landscape, with numerous smaller waterfalls cascading down the hillsides. It was a breathtaking panorama that truly captured the beauty of Iceland. Legend says that Þrasi, one of the first Viking settlers in Skógar, hid a chest of gold behind the waterfall. While I didn’t find any treasure, I certainly felt rich in the beauty that surrounded me.

After taking in the views, I decided to explore the Skógar Museum. This fascinating folk museum has a collection of over 6,000 artifacts, showcasing various aspects of Icelandic life through the ages. I wandered through the exhibits, admiring the traditional turf houses and learning about the tools and equipment used by Icelanders in the past. It was a great way to gain a deeper understanding of the country’s history and culture.

For lunch, I stopped at Geysir Glima restaurant. The restaurant has an Icelandic menu using the freshest fish and meat of the season with a strong focus on local produce. I opted for the soup and salad bar, which featured a variety of traditional Icelandic soups, including the famous meat soup. It was the perfect way to warm up after a day of exploring waterfalls, and the flavors were hearty and satisfying. The restaurant's design, inspired by Icelandic nature and the sport of glíma (Icelandic wrestling), added to the unique atmosphere.

With the afternoon still stretching ahead, I decided to indulge in a bit of souvenir shopping. I made my way to Rammagerðin, a gift shop known for its focus on Icelandic design and craftsmanship. I found a location of Rammagerðin in Hvolsvöllur. As someone with a passion for sustainable and locally sourced products, I was excited to see what they had to offer.

Rammagerðin didn’t disappoint. The shop was filled with beautiful woolen goods, handcrafted jewelry, and locally inspired artwork. I spent ages browsing the shelves, admiring the skill and creativity of the Icelandic artisans. I eventually settled on a cozy lopapeysa sweater, a traditional Icelandic wool sweater with a distinctive circular pattern around the yoke. It was the perfect way to remember my trip, and I knew it would keep me warm on future adventures. I also picked up a few small gifts for Liam, knowing he’d appreciate the craftsmanship and unique designs. I know there are other locations in Reykjavik if I need to get more gifts before heading home.

For dinner, I had planned to visit Hafið Bláa Restaurant With A View. It’s known for its fresh seafood and Scandinavian-inspired dishes, not to mention the stunning vistas of the surrounding landscapes. The restaurant is gracefully perched at the confluence of the Ölfusá River. I enjoyed a delectable seafood platter while enjoying the spectacular view of the geothermal area. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with natural beauty and Icelandic charm.

As I reflect on today’s adventures, I’m struck by the diversity of experiences Iceland offers. From the serene beauty of Ægissíðufoss to the grandeur of Skógafoss, and the cozy charm of Rammagerðin, there’s something here for everyone. And as I prepare for tomorrow’s journey to Tindfjöll and Hrafntinnusker , I know that there are still countless wonders waiting to be discovered in this magical land. I am very excited for the day ahead!

I am excited to see what tomorrow holds, especially my stop at Lundinn (Original Puffin Bar). It will be a nice way to wind down after my hikes.
