Family Adventure in Kyoto: Exploring Japan's Cultural Heart
Day 7: A Day of Culture and Comfort in Kyoto
Exploring Kyoto's cultural treasures with family: Nijo Castle, Manga Museum, Botanical Gardens, and delightful dining experiences.
Kyoto's Blend of History and Pop Culture
Today in Kyoto felt like a perfect blend of old and new, a testament to how seamlessly this city weaves its rich history with modern delights. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you're exploring with your family, and today was no exception. Sophie's endless curiosity keeps us on our toes, and Lena's knack for finding the best local spots always enriches our adventures.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Antonio. It was a delightful start, fueling us up for a day of exploration. The hotel breakfast is great and all, but it’s really nice to venture out and try something local!

Stepping Back in Time at Nijō Castle
Our first stop was Nijō Castle. The sheer scale of the place is impressive, and you can easily imagine the Shogun holding court here. The intricate details of the architecture were fascinating. The 'nightingale floors' were particularly interesting. Knowing that these squeaking floors were designed to alert the occupants to intruders added an extra layer of intrigue to our walk through the castle. Sophie, of course, loved the squeaky floors, turning our historical tour into a bit of a game! It wasn't quite the imposing fortress I had envisioned, more of an understated imperial residence, but its historical significance was palpable. I learned that the castle was built in 1603 as the residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu. It's amazing to walk through a place with so much history embedded in its walls.

The best journey takes you home, even if it's just to yourself.
Embracing Modern Art at the Kyoto International Manga Museum
Next on our itinerary was the Kyoto International Manga Museum. This was a complete change of pace from the serene atmosphere of Nijō Castle, but no less captivating. The museum is housed in a former school building, which adds to its unique charm. The moment we stepped inside, we were surrounded by walls upon walls of manga. It was a vibrant and colorful explosion of modern Japanese culture. Sophie was absolutely thrilled, and even Lena, who isn't as familiar with manga, found herself drawn into the exhibits.

I was impressed by the sheer volume of manga on display, with approximately 300,000 items ranging from Edo period caricature woodblock prints to modern popular series. What struck me most was the global appeal of manga. Seeing manga in Portuguese, Thai, Catalan, and Finnish really highlighted how manga and anime have enriched so many lives around the world. Sophie even had her portrait drawn as a manga character!
A Breath of Fresh Air at Kyoto Botanical Gardens
After immersing ourselves in history and pop culture, we needed a change of scenery. The Kyoto Botanical Gardens provided the perfect respite. Despite it being January, the gardens were still full of life. The tropical greenhouse was a particular highlight, offering a warm and humid escape from the winter chill. It felt like stepping into another world, filled with lush greenery and exotic plants. We spent a good hour wandering through the greenhouse, admiring the vibrant flora. Sophie was fascinated by the carnivorous plants, and Lena enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere.

I read that the gardens are especially beautiful in late January when the wintersweets are in full bloom. While we didn't see any wintersweets, the red plum blossoms were just starting to bud, which was a lovely sight. The gardens provided a calm and peaceful escape from the city, allowing us to appreciate the beauty of nature.
A Culinary Journey Through Kyoto
Of course, no day in Kyoto would be complete without indulging in the local cuisine. For lunch, we headed to Premium Pound Gion. The restaurant is tucked away in the Gion district, exuding a traditional Kyoto atmosphere. All seats are counter seats, offering a front-row view of the chefs preparing our meal teppanyaki style. I must say, the beef was top-notch! I opted for the Kobe beef, and it was cooked to perfection. Lena enjoyed the A5 grade Kuroge Wagyu, while Sophie devoured her portion of Kagoshima Wagyu. The service was impeccable, and the staff made us feel incredibly welcome.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Chihana for dinner. This restaurant has been awarded Michelin stars for nine consecutive years. Chihana specializes in Itamae Kappo cuisine. Each dish was beautifully presented, resembling a work of art. The chef used seasonal ingredients to create a delicate and flavorful culinary experience. It was a fitting end to a day filled with cultural and sensory delights.

Souvenir Shopping at Noren by Corazon
Before heading back to Hotel ALZA KYOTO, we stopped by Noren by Corazon. This boutique gift shop stands out with its cool, contemporary, and beautifully designed souvenirs. I was looking for something unique to bring back home. The shop's interior was charming, with fragrant hinoki shelves and white paper lanterns inspired by the Gion Festival. I ended up purchasing a few furoshiki bags. Lena bought some beautifully crafted pens, while Sophie chose a cute maneki-neko cushion.

Reflecting on the Day and Looking Ahead
As I sit here in our hotel room, reflecting on the day, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we shared as a family. Kyoto has a way of captivating your senses and leaving you with lasting memories. It's a city that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity, offering something for everyone. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. We plan to visit the Kyoto Railway Museum, Toei Kyoto Studio Park, and Shozan Resort Kyoto. I'm particularly excited about the railway museum, as I've always been fascinated by trains. It's also Lena's turn to pick the evening activity, so we will be visiting Bar Fishbowl.
I really need to remember to buy Michael new hiking boots, and Sophie is still upset about leaving her favorite stuffed animal at home. I guess we’ll have to find a replacement here. Good thing we’re making memories that will last a lifetime!
Until tomorrow,
Michael
