Kyoto's Hidden Gems: Rails, Reels, and Relaxation
Today was a delightful mix of transportation history, cinematic adventure, and serene relaxation. It’s amazing how much variety Kyoto offers, and I'm so glad we carved out time to experience it all. These are the days that make travel so rewarding, when you stumble upon unexpected joys and create lasting memories.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Fujiya. It was a great way to start the day. The restaurant was cozy and the food was delicious. It was a perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

All Aboard at the Kyoto Railway Museum
Our first stop was the Kyoto Railway Museum. As a kid growing up in Kamloops, I was always fascinated by trains, and this museum brought back so many fond memories. It was a trip down memory lane, seeing those old locomotives and learning about the history of Japan's railway system. Sophie was absolutely thrilled, running from one exhibit to another with wide-eyed wonder. Lena, ever the practical one, appreciated the museum's layout and the informative displays. Even she admitted it was more interesting than she'd anticipated! We spent a good few hours exploring the various exhibits, from the meticulously preserved steam locomotives to the sleek, modern Shinkansen. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the driving simulators, pretending to be a train conductor with gusto. I have to admit, I enjoyed them too! There was something magical about seeing the evolution of train travel all in one place. It reminded me of the trains back in Canada and how important they were for connecting communities. Plus, it was warm inside, a welcome escape from the January chill.

The journey of a lifetime isn't about the destination, but the experiences collected along the way.
Stepping into the Silver Screen at Toei Kyoto Studio Park
Next on our itinerary was the Toei Kyoto Studio Park, a place where movies come to life. The park is both a working film studio and a theme park, offering a unique glimpse into the world of Japanese cinema. It was fascinating to walk through the sets, imagining samurai warriors battling it out on the very streets we were strolling. Sophie was completely captivated by the ninja shows, her eyes glued to the acrobatic performers. Lena, with her keen eye for detail, admired the intricate set designs and the historical accuracy of the costumes. I even got a kick out of seeing some of the behind-the-scenes action, witnessing a film crew setting up a shot. It felt like stepping into another world, a world of samurai, geishas, and ancient Japanese towns. We explored traditional Edo-period streets, marveled at the detailed recreations of historical buildings, and even braved the haunted house, which, I must admit, gave me a bit of a fright! The park had a special charm, especially with the occasional glimpse of a real film crew at work. It reminded me of the backlots in Hollywood, but with a distinctly Japanese flair.

Finding Serenity at Shozan Resort Kyoto
After a day of trains and movie sets, we were ready for some relaxation. Our final destination was the Shozan Resort Kyoto, a tranquil oasis nestled in the foothills of the Takagamine mountains. The resort is known for its beautiful gardens, traditional tea houses, and serene atmosphere. As we strolled through the meticulously manicured gardens, the crisp winter air filled our lungs, and the gentle sound of flowing water calmed our senses. The resort was stunning even in winter, with the snow-dusted trees adding a touch of magic to the landscape. We wandered through the traditional tea houses, imagining geishas gracefully serving tea, and admired the intricate details of the Japanese architecture. The Shozan Resort was the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of the city. It was a reminder of the simple pleasures in life: nature, beauty, and tranquility. We ended our visit with a delightful lunch at Oryori Menami, savoring authentic Kyoto cuisine in a peaceful setting. The delicate flavors and artistic presentation of the dishes were a treat for the senses. It was a lovely way to end our day, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

A Nightcap in Gion
To cap off the evening, I decided to sneak away for a quick nightcap at Bar Fishbowl, a quirky spot I’d read about. It's a small bar with an aquarium built in! It was definitely a unique experience, sipping on a Japanese whiskey while watching colorful fish swim by. A perfect way to end a varied and exciting day.

Tomorrow's Journey
Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit Kodaiji Temple, Chionin Temple, and Maruyama Park. I'm looking forward to exploring more of Kyoto's cultural treasures and experiencing the city's vibrant atmosphere. Lena is especially excited about the temples, while Sophie is eager to run around in Maruyama Park. And I, of course, am keen to sample more of Kyoto's culinary delights. Before we head out to the temples, we are planning to have breakfast at Yoshikawa.
Despite a minor hiccup with Sophie’s missing stuffed animal, which we thankfully recovered, today was a resounding success. It’s these kinds of days, filled with diverse experiences and shared laughter, that make family travel so worthwhile. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures!
