Farewell, Kyoto!
As our family adventure in Kyoto draws to a close, I wanted to capture the essence of our final day exploring this incredible city. It's hard to believe our nine days here are already up. From serene temples to bustling shopping arcades, Kyoto has given us memories that we'll cherish for a lifetime. Today was all about soaking in the last bits of Kyoto's magic before we head back to Heidelberg. Let me tell you all about it.
We started our day with a delightful breakfast at Yoshikawa. As usual, the traditional Japanese breakfast set us up perfectly for the day's adventures. Sophie was especially fond of the tamagoyaki, and Lena enjoyed her miso soup immensely. I savored the grilled fish, a simple yet delicious start to the morning. I love the way they do breakfast here; it's so different from the usual German fare of bread and cold cuts!
Our first stop was Kodaiji Temple. After the crowds at some of the other sites, this felt like a true oasis of calm. The crisp morning air and the gentle sunlight filtering through the trees created a serene atmosphere. The temple, founded in 1606 by the widow of a high-ranking nobleman, has a rich history, and the artistry is wonderful, leaving a lasting impression. I was particularly impressed by the gardens, designed by notable Japanese artist Enshu Kobori. The clever design choices and excellent layout made it a unique and memorable experience. Sophie loved the bamboo grove, and Lena was captivated by the intricate lacquerwork inside the temple buildings. I found myself reflecting on the temple's history and the peace it offered amid the bustling city. It was a refreshing change of pace, and a perfect spot for some quiet contemplation.

Next on our itinerary was Chionin Temple, the head temple of the Jodo sect. This place was HUGE! The Sanmon gate, the largest wooden gate in Japan, was truly awe-inspiring. As we walked through the grounds, we learned about the temple's history and its significance to Pure Land Buddhism. Founded by Honen in 1294, the temple has been saving many people for 850 years. The sheer scale of the temple complex was impressive, and the intricate details of the architecture were fascinating. Sophie was amazed by the size of the temple bell, the largest in Japan. Lena appreciated the serene atmosphere and the sense of history that permeated the grounds. I found myself drawn to the stories of Honen and his teachings, which emphasized salvation through the simple act of chanting. It was a humbling experience, and a reminder of the enduring power of faith.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of a bustling city.
After the temples, we decided to take a leisurely stroll through Maruyama Park. Even in January, the park had a certain charm. The snow-dusted landscape and the bare trees created a peaceful, almost meditative atmosphere. Though it's known for its springtime cherry blossoms, there was still a lot to appreciate. We walked along the paths, enjoying the crisp air and the quiet beauty of the park. Sophie enjoyed chasing the pigeons, and Lena took some beautiful photos of the scenery. I found myself appreciating the simplicity of nature, and the way it could bring a sense of calm even in the midst of a busy city. Maruyama Park is a large public park located between the always popular Higashiyama District and Yasaka Shrine. It's a popular spot year-round, but it reaches its peak in early April when Kyoto residents gather beneath the cherry blossom trees to celebrate hanami with friends and family. It was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on our time in Kyoto.

For lunch, we ventured to Sakuragawa. This restaurant, recommended by a local, turned out to be a hidden gem. The food was exquisite, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. We tried a variety of dishes, including fresh sashimi, tempura, and a delicious miso soup. Sophie enjoyed her chicken teriyaki, and Lena was impressed by the delicate flavors of the sushi. I savored every bite, appreciating the artistry and skill that went into each dish. The service was impeccable, and the staff made us feel welcome and comfortable. It was a perfect culinary experience, and a fitting way to celebrate our last day in Kyoto.

In the afternoon, we decided to explore the Sanjo Meiten-gai Shopping Arcade. This covered arcade was a treasure trove of shops, selling everything from traditional crafts to modern goods. It was a fun and lively place, and we enjoyed browsing the various stores. Sophie was fascinated by the colorful displays of toys and souvenirs, and Lena found some beautiful silk scarves to take home. I picked up a few bottles of local sake, eager to share them with friends back in Heidelberg. The arcade had a local atmosphere and fewer tourists. It was like strolling through a charming alley, but under cover, so the weather was never a problem. The Sanjo Meiten-gai Shopping Arcade is known for its unique blend of traditional and contemporary shops, providing visitors with a delightful shopping experience that caters to various tastes and preferences. It was a great way to experience the local culture and find some unique souvenirs.

Our final dinner in Kyoto was at Hafuu, a restaurant known for its exquisite beef dishes. The meal was a true culinary delight. We started with a selection of appetizers, followed by the main course of tender, perfectly cooked beef. The flavors were rich and complex, and the presentation was stunning. Sophie enjoyed her steak, and Lena was impressed by the quality of the ingredients. I savored every bite, appreciating the skill and artistry of the chef. The atmosphere was elegant and refined, and the service was impeccable. It was a perfect way to end our culinary journey in Kyoto.
