Day 11: Farewell to Shirakawa-go: A Day of Reflection and Gassho-style Goodbyes
Reflecting on my solo journey through Shirakawa-go, exploring traditional homes, serene temples, and savoring the last moments.
Last Day Musings in Shirakawa-go
As my solo adventure in Shirakawa-go draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had in this serene village. From the unique architecture of the gassho-zukuri farmhouses to the warm hospitality of the locals, Shirakawa-go has left an indelible mark on my soul. Today, I aim to soak in every last bit of its charm before embarking on my journey back to Heidelberg.
My final day began with a hearty breakfast at Tanaka-ya. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration and reflection. The cozy atmosphere of Tanaka-ya, with its vintage decor and floor seating, made the experience even more special. It was a quiet, contemplative start, a moment to appreciate the simple pleasures before diving into the day's itinerary.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out to visit the Shirakawago Three Houses. These iconic gassho-zukuri structures, standing side by side, are a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the people who have called this village home for generations. As I approached the Three Houses, the sun was just beginning to peek over the mountains, casting a golden glow on the thatched roofs. I took my time wandering around the area, snapping photos from various angles, trying to capture the essence of these architectural marvels. The surrounding rice paddies added to the picturesque scene, creating a sense of tranquility that is hard to find elsewhere.

The beauty of Shirakawa-go lies not just in its stunning landscapes and unique architecture, but in the feeling of stepping back in time, connecting with a simpler way of life.
Next on my list was Myozenji Temple. This serene sanctuary, with its thatched main hall and historic bell tower, offered a glimpse into the spiritual heart of Shirakawa-go. Founded in 1748, Myozenji Temple has been the main Buddhist sanctuary in the village of Ogimachi. As I stepped through the Shoromon Gate, I was immediately struck by the sense of peace and tranquility that permeated the air. The temple grounds were meticulously maintained, with carefully manicured gardens and ancient trees that seemed to whisper stories of the past. I explored the main hall, admiring the intricate details of the wooden carvings and the serene expressions of the Buddhist statues. I also visited the kuri, or living quarters of the head priest, which has been transformed into a museum showcasing traditional life in Shirakawa-go. It was fascinating to see the artifacts and learn about the customs and traditions that have shaped this community for centuries.
For lunch, I decided to try Hiiragi, a restaurant known for its Hida beef skewers and sukiyaki. I opted for the Hida beef set, which came with a variety of side dishes and a steaming bowl of rice. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with each bite. The friendly owners of Hiiragi made the experience even more enjoyable, sharing stories about the local cuisine and culture. It was a delightful culinary adventure, a fitting tribute to the flavors of Shirakawa-go.

After lunch, I strolled through the village, making my way to Shin ge do, a local shop known for its original handmade products and folk crafts. I wanted to find a special souvenir to remind me of my time in Shirakawa-go, something that captured the essence of this unique place. As I browsed the shelves, I was drawn to a small, intricately carved wooden figure of a gassho-zukuri farmhouse. It was the perfect memento, a tangible reminder of the beauty and tranquility of Shirakawa-go. I also picked up a few other small gifts for Lena and Sophie, knowing they would appreciate the thoughtfulness behind them.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Tenshukaku for a final dinner. This restaurant is renowned not only for its culinary offerings but also for the panoramic views of Shirakawa-go that it provides. Fortunately, the restaurant also had homemade tofu and wild vegetable dishes. I savored each bite, knowing that it would be my last taste of Shirakawa-go for now. As I looked out over the village, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to have experienced this special place. The gassho-zukuri farmhouses, bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun, seemed to bid me farewell, their steep thatched roofs silhouetted against the darkening sky.
