Exploring the Enchanted Forests of Yakushima
Day 10: Banyan Trees and Botanical Bliss: A Day of Serene Discoveries in Yakushima
Exploring Yakushima's serene side: Banyan Park's ancient trees, botanical gardens' lush beauty, and local culinary delights.
Finding Peace in Yakushima's Green Embrace
Today was a day dedicated to the quieter, more contemplative side of Yakushima. After several days of challenging hikes and breathtaking vistas, I decided to slow down and immerse myself in the island's unique flora and tranquil spaces. It was a day of gentle exploration, a soothing balm for the soul, and a reminder of the simple joys of connecting with nature.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It's funny, I've eaten here multiple times now, but it's become a comforting ritual. There's something about watching the small planes take off and land that fills me with a sense of anticipation and adventure, even when my own travels for the day are more local. I opted for the Yakushima udon, a comforting bowl of noodles with fried yam and flying fish. It’s a simple meal, but the flavors are so fresh and satisfying.
Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park: A Dance of Roots and Branches
After breakfast, I set off for Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park. The drive itself was lovely, winding through lush greenery with glimpses of the ocean. The park is located in Shitoko, a small village with a population of just 300. It’s a charming place, and I learned that during the flying fish season in May, almost everyone in the village used to participate in the fishing efforts. It’s these little details that make traveling so enriching; you get a sense of the community and its history.
The Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park isn't large, but it's captivating. The banyan trees, known as 'gajumaru' in Japanese, are the stars of the show. These trees have sprawling roots and branches that intertwine, creating a magical, almost otherworldly atmosphere. As I wandered through the park, I was struck by the sheer resilience and adaptability of these ancient trees. They seemed to be telling stories of survival and growth. I took my time, following both the 10-minute and the 'lengthy' 15-minute walking courses, simply soaking in the tranquility. The air was thick with humidity, but the shade provided by the banyan trees offered a welcome respite from the July heat.
The banyan trees used to grow all along the coast, protecting the village from strong winds. Now, the park is a public space where you can see these fascinating trees, also known as strangler figs. I even spotted some Hawaiian giant taro, adding to the tropical feel.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.
There's a small Shinto shrine nearby, Sumiyoshi Shrine, and I decided to pay it a visit. A row of magnificent cedar trees leads to the main shrine, and behind it, a giant banyan tree is wrapped around a cedar tree. It was a beautiful sight, a testament to the interconnectedness of nature.
Botanic Gardens: A Symphony of Green
Next on my itinerary was a visit to the Botanic Gardens. I was eager to see the diverse ecosystems of Yakushima showcased in one place. The gardens are located about 2.5 kilometers south of Miyanoura Port, and the drive was easy to navigate.
As I entered the gardens, I was immediately enveloped in a symphony of green. The gardens span a variety of habitats and are home to an impressive collection of native and exotic flora. I wandered along the winding paths, encountering vibrant blooms, towering trees, and tranquil ponds. It was a feast for the senses.
I found myself particularly drawn to the educational displays about the island's unique biodiversity and conservation efforts. As a horticultural consultant, I was fascinated by the information about the various plant species and their significance within the local ecosystem. I spent a good couple of hours exploring the gardens, taking photographs, and simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. It was a perfect way to connect with the natural beauty of Yakushima.

Lunch at Wakadaisho: A Taste of the Sea
By now, I was feeling quite peckish, so I decided to head to Wakadaisho for lunch. This popular spot in Miyanoura is known for its fresh seafood. I had heard great things about their sashimi and decided to give it a try. I wasn't disappointed!
The restaurant was bustling with activity, but the staff were friendly and accommodating. I ordered the sashimi special set, which included a variety of local fish. Each piece was incredibly fresh and flavorful. I also tried the fried flying fish, a Yakushima specialty. It was crispy and delicious, served with spicy oroshi (grated radish) and ponzu (citrus soya sauce).
As I savored my meal, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the abundance of natural resources on this island. The seafood was so fresh, the vegetables were vibrant, and the flavors were simply outstanding. It was a true taste of Yakushima.

Dinner at Yakushima Gallery Restaurant: A Culinary Masterpiece
For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a meal at the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. I had heard that the chef was incredibly talented, and I was eager to experience his culinary creations.
The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were warm and welcoming. I opted for one of their set menus, which included a variety of local specialties. The highlight of the meal was the giant shrimp, which was juicy and meaty. I also enjoyed the fried flying fish, which was served with a spicy oroshi and ponzu sauce. Each set came with a huge portion of rice, chawanmushi (steamed egg custard), side dish, and miso soup.
I also decided to add some sashimi. It was worth it. The chef was very nice and social. I really felt like I could keep praising this little place for eternity because literally everything was spot on and perfect.

Ganta: A Nightcap by the Harbor
To cap off the evening, I decided to visit Ganta, a local bar in Miyanoura. It's known for staying open late, which is a rarity on Yakushima. I ordered a local craft beer and sat by the window, enjoying the view of the harbor. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and I struck up a conversation with some locals. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.
As I sipped my beer, I reflected on the day's experiences. I had found peace and tranquility in the banyan trees and botanical gardens. I had savored the flavors of Yakushima at Wakadaisho and the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. And I had connected with the local community at Ganta. It was a day that I would cherish for a long time.

Tomorrow, I'm planning on tackling Mt. Miyanoura, the highest peak on the island. It's going to be a challenging hike, but I'm looking forward to the breathtaking views from the top. I also plan to visit the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center to learn more about the island's history and culture. Before that, I will have breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant once again. For dinner, I’m hoping to try Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan. And if I have time, I might pop into Gallery KIANU, a local shop.
For now, though, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of adventure in Yakushima. I am so glad I decided to come here, I am learning so much about the environment and also about myself.
I think I'll finish with a German saying I've picked up since living in Heidelberg: Alle guten Dinge sind drei. All good things come in threes. I'm hoping my last two days here continue to be just as good as the first ten!
Embark on a solo adventure through Yakushima's mystical forests, discovering ancient trees, vibrant wildlife, and serene landscapes.
