A Day of Discovery
Today, on the ninth day of my solo adventure in Yakushima, I decided to delve deeper into the island's history and culture, alongside soaking in some panoramic views. It was a day of contrasts, from exploring ancient artifacts to savoring local delicacies. It's amazing how much a single day can enrich your understanding of a place, and I’m excited to share my experiences.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Shiosai. The restaurant was easy to find, and I was immediately drawn in by the aroma of fresh seafood. I opted for their tempura set, featuring locally sourced vegetables and prawns. The batter was light and crispy, and everything tasted incredibly fresh. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration.

After breakfast, I made my way to the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore. Nestled close to the Miyanoura River, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the island's past. The single-story exhibition hall displayed a variety of exhibits, from original Edo Period documents to wood and wicker folk tools. I was particularly intrigued by the exhibits relating to local festivals, including costumes and a rice straw rope used in a tug-of-war between different villages. It gave me a real sense of the community spirit here.

The more I learn about Yakushima, the more I appreciate its unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.
I learned that the museum opened in 1983 and aims to preserve the culture for future generations. There was also a reconstruction of a rural house where roof tiles were made, which provided a tangible connection to the island's architectural history. Although the exhibits were primarily in Japanese, I was provided with a laminated sheet in English, which was incredibly helpful. It was fascinating to see exhibits on Yakushima's native monkeys and deer, and even a wooden monkey trap! As a horticulturist, I was also interested in the traditional farming implements on display.
Next on my itinerary was the East China Sea Observatory. The drive to the observatory was stunning, with winding roads offering glimpses of the coastline and lush greenery. As I ascended, the air grew crisper, and the panoramic views of the East China Sea were simply breathtaking. The horizon stretched out before me, a seamless blend of sky and water. I could see why this spot is so popular for photographers and those seeking a moment of tranquility. I took some time to simply soak in the view, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such natural beauty.

The observatory itself was a peaceful place, less crowded than some of the other tourist spots on the island. I could hear the waves crashing against the rocky coastline, and the fresh sea breeze was invigorating. It's a perfect spot for birdwatching, and I spotted a few local species soaring overhead. The East China Sea Observatory is perched amidst the serene landscapes of Yakushima, a captivating destination for tourists seeking both adventure and tranquility.
For lunch, I headed to Iso no Kaori, a popular sushi and sashimi restaurant located on the main road north of Anbo. I had heard great things about their fresh seafood, and I wasn't disappointed. I tried their sashimi set, and the fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The staff were friendly and accommodating, and the atmosphere was authentic and welcoming. I also decided to try the fried sweet potato, which was recommended, and it was absolutely delicious.

After lunch, I decided to do some shopping at Moriizumi. This charming souvenir store was filled with local crafts and traditional gifts. I was looking for a unique memento of my trip, and I found a beautiful handcrafted ceramic bowl. The store had an array of products, from delicate ceramics to intricate textiles, all made by local artisans. Each piece told a story, capturing the beauty of the island and its culture. As I wandered through the store, I took my time to appreciate the craftsmanship that went into each item. I learned that Moriizumi is particularly known for its selection of traditional Japanese souvenirs, including beautiful calligraphy scrolls, exquisite wood carvings, and charming decorative items.

For dinner, I decided to try Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan. This bustling market offered a variety of local produce and crafts, and the restaurant served traditional Japanese dishes. I opted for a grilled fish set, which came with miso soup, rice, and pickled vegetables. It was a comforting and satisfying meal, and I enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the market. As the day drew to a close, I reflected on all that I had experienced. From exploring the island's history and culture to soaking in its natural beauty and savoring its local flavors, it had been a truly immersive day. I felt a deeper connection to Yakushima, and I was grateful for the opportunity to learn and explore.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park and the Botanic Gardens. I'm looking forward to exploring more of Yakushima's natural wonders, and I'm excited to see what new discoveries await me. I might even stop by Ganta for a drink in the evening, to reflect on my adventures. It's been an incredible journey so far, and I can't wait to see what the next few days have in store.
It's amazing how much there is to discover in a place like Yakushima. The island's blend of history, nature, and culture is truly captivating, and I feel fortunate to be able to experience it all. The local people are warm and welcoming, and I feel like I'm starting to understand the soul of this beautiful island. As I prepare for my final days here, I know that Yakushima will hold a special place in my heart for years to come.
I’m also reminded that while I packed most of my essentials, I did forget a portable phone charger and a Japanese phrasebook. A phrasebook would have been useful at the museum, even if the laminated sheet was helpful. Fortunately, I’ve managed without, but it’s a good reminder to double-check my packing list next time.
As I end my day, I am already looking forward to tomorrow’s exploration of the Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park, as well as the Botanic Gardens. I wonder what natural wonders I will encounter. It is with great anticipation that I turn in for the night, ready to continue my journey through Yakushima.
I am also mindful of the Expo 2025 theme, “Saving Lives,” as I think about Yakushima. It highlights the importance of protecting and preserving Yakushima's nature, which provides people with abundant blessings. It is a sentiment I will take with me as I continue my travels.
I also learned today that there are many festivals in Yakushima, and I am sorry to miss some of them. There is the World Heritage Yakushima Open Water Swimming event, Isso Beach Festival, and Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen Festival, among others. Perhaps I will time my next visit to coincide with one of these events!
Yakushima continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. From its ancient forests to its vibrant culture, this island is a true gem. I feel grateful for the opportunity to explore its wonders, and I look forward to sharing more of my experiences with you in the days to come.
