Whispers of the Waterfalls
Today was a symphony of nature's grandeur and culinary artistry. As a horticultural consultant, I'm always drawn to places where the natural world puts on a show, and Yakushima certainly delivered. The island's waterfalls are legendary, and I was eager to experience their power and beauty firsthand. Add to that the promise of local flavors, and I knew it would be a day to remember.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Each Meal, a Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter. What a name, right? It certainly lived up to the hype. The restaurant was small and intimate, creating a cozy atmosphere that immediately made me feel at home. The chef greeted me with a warm smile and presented a menu that celebrated locally sourced ingredients. It was more than just a meal; it was an immersion into Yakushima's culinary soul. I decided to try a traditional Japanese breakfast to fully embrace the experience. It featured grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly cooked rice. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I must admit, learning German idioms with Klaus has inspired me to try and learn some Japanese ones too – though I’m not sure I’m brave enough to try incorporating them into my blog just yet!
Fueled and ready, my first destination was the majestic Senpiro Falls. The drive there was an adventure in itself, a winding road that offered glimpses of Yakushima's lush interior. The anticipation grew with every turn, and when I finally arrived, I was not disappointed. The falls are easily accessible, just a short walk from the main road. Even coach tours make a stop here, so it's clearly a must-see.

Senpiro Falls is truly a sight to behold. The water plunges 60 meters into a V-shaped valley, carved over millennia by the Tainoko River. The sheer scale of the granite cliffs is awe-inspiring, and the mist rising from the base of the falls creates an ethereal atmosphere. The name 'Senpiro' comes from the idea that the rock face resembles a thousand people holding hands – a testament to its immense size. The falls were especially powerful today, likely due to the recent rains.
Nature's grandeur and culinary artistry intertwine to create a tapestry of unforgettable moments.
I spent a good while simply soaking in the scene. As a horticultural consultant, I found myself studying the plant life clinging to the rocks, marveling at their tenacity. The vibrant greens against the gray granite were a study in contrasts, a reminder of nature's ability to thrive in even the most challenging environments. I took numerous photos, trying to capture the essence of this place, but as always, the reality was far more impressive than any image could convey. I thought of Klaus back in Heidelberg, and how much he would have appreciated this geological wonder. He’s always been fascinated by rock formations and natural landscapes. I made a mental note to find a good postcard for him.
From Senpiro Falls, I ventured towards Ryujin Falls. Ryujin Falls is visible from the Senpiro Bridge, which crosses the Tainoko River. This 30-meter waterfall is surrounded by lush scenery. The name 'Ryujin' means Dragon God, which I thought was quite fitting. The cascade tumbles down a rocky cliff into a clear pool, creating a refreshing spray. It's a more secluded spot, requiring a short hike through the forest. The trail was narrow and winding, leading me deeper into Yakushima's wilderness. As I approached the falls, I could hear the increasing roar of the water, a sign that I was getting close. The mist from the falls created a cool, refreshing atmosphere. I took some time to simply sit and observe, letting the sounds of the water wash over me.

After a morning of chasing waterfalls, my stomach was starting to rumble. It was time to sample more of Yakushima's culinary offerings. For lunch, I headed to Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan. This bustling market is a treasure trove of local produce, crafts, and food stalls. It’s a great place to immerse yourself in the local culture and discover unique souvenirs. I opted for a bowl of *tonkotsu* ramen, a hearty pork-based noodle soup that was both comforting and delicious. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the noodles were perfectly cooked. It was the ideal midday meal.

I wandered through the market, admiring the local crafts and produce. I picked up some *tankan* citrus fruits, a specialty of Yakushima. The air was filled with the aroma of grilled fish and freshly baked goods. It was a feast for the senses. I even spotted some *kame no te* (turtle legs), a local delicacy that I was too timid to try! Perhaps tomorrow I’ll be brave enough.
As the day drew to a close, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Matsutake, a soba noodle restaurant. Finding it was a mini-adventure in itself, tucked away behind another house. It’s definitely a hidden gem. This charming and authentic Japanese restaurant offers delicious soba noodles and warm hospitality. The owners are incredibly kind, and the service is prompt. The interior exudes an authentic Japanese atmosphere with tatami floor seating. I took off my shoes and settled in for a relaxing meal. The cold soba noodles with tempura are particularly recommended, and the desert with coffee is simply amazing.

I ordered the *zaru soba*, cold soba noodles served with a dipping sauce and tempura. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the tempura was light and crispy. It was a truly satisfying meal. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making me feel like a regular. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Yakushima's natural beauty.
Before heading back to my guesthouse, I made a quick stop at Ambar, a local bar. I decided to enjoy a quiet drink and reflect on the day. The bar had a cozy atmosphere, and the bartender was friendly. I ordered a local craft beer and savored the moment. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking and exploring.

I am planning to visit the Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center and the Yakusugi Museum tomorrow. I’m excited to learn more about the island’s history and conservation efforts. I am also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Pukaridō.
Yakushima continues to surprise and delight me with its natural beauty and culinary delights. It's a place where you can truly immerse yourself in nature and experience the best of Japanese hospitality. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
It’s interesting to note that back home in Yakima, Washington, they’re gearing up for their own 4th of July celebrations with live music, food, and fireworks! I wonder if they have anything as unique as flying fish on the menu…
“Ten days at sea, ten days in the village, and ten days in the mountains.” This famous saying relates to the lifestyle of people on Yakushima and their connection to nature past and present. I feel like I’m beginning to understand this connection myself.
Goodnight from Yakushima!
