Day 2: Dades Valley's Dramatic Beauty: Monkey Paws and Canyon Adventures
Michelle explores the captivating Monkey Paw Mountains and Fingers Canyon in Dades Valley, Morocco, with stunning views and local flavors.
Chasing Monkey Fingers in the Dades Valley
Today was all about embracing the unique geological wonders of the Dades Valley. From the intriguing Monkey Paw Mountains to the depths of the Monkey Fingers Canyon, every moment felt like stepping into a living postcard. The vibrant colors, dramatic rock formations, and warm hospitality of the local Berbers made it a day to remember. It’s amazing how landscapes can carve themselves into your memory, not just as sights, but as feelings and experiences.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe restaurant Des Amis. With its stunning views of the Dades Gorge, it was the perfect spot to fuel up for our adventures. The traditional Moroccan bread and mint tea, or as the locals call it, Berber whisky, set the tone for a day of cultural immersion. I even tried out a new German idiom on the staff, “*Morgenstund hat Gold im Mund*” (the early bird catches the worm), which earned me a few smiles and nods. It’s always fun to connect with people through language, even if it’s just a small phrase. Klaus, ever the early riser, was particularly pleased with the saying!
After breakfast, we set off to explore the famed Monkey Paw Mountains. The drive itself was breathtaking, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the valley. As we approached the mountains, I couldn't help but marvel at the unique rock formations that resembled a monkey's hand reaching towards the sky. The Dades Valley in October is simply stunning. The temperature is mild, the sky is clear, and the sun shines just enough to make the red rocks glow.
We spent a good hour snapping photos and simply soaking in the view. The fresh air and the quiet solitude were a welcome change from the bustling city life back in Heidelberg. I made a mental note to try and capture this serenity in my garden back home. Perhaps a small rock garden with succulents could bring a touch of the Dades Valley to Germany.
Next on our itinerary was the Monkey Fingers Canyon. This was an experience I had eagerly anticipated, and it did not disappoint. The canyon is a narrow gorge with towering rock walls that create a sense of being in another world. As we hiked through the canyon, we were surrounded by bizarre rock formations that truly resembled the inside of a monkey's hand. It was like walking through a surreal sculpture garden crafted by nature itself. Klaus was in his element, his architectural mind fascinated by the forces of erosion that had shaped these incredible structures.

The hike itself was adventurous, with some parts requiring us to scramble over rocks and duck under low-hanging formations. I even had to help Olivia navigate a particularly tricky spot, reminding me of our hiking trips in the Odenwald forest back home.
Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are those that require a little bit of effort and a willingness to step outside of your comfort zone.
After our canyon adventure, it was time for a well-deserved lunch. We headed to Restaurant Dar Ahlam Dades, enticed by its promise of authentic Moroccan cuisine amidst stunning landscapes. The restaurant was a delightful blend of traditional Berber decor and modern comfort. We sat on a terrace overlooking the valley, enjoying the gentle breeze and the warm October sun.

I ordered a tagine, a classic Moroccan dish, while Klaus opted for grilled meats. The food was delicious, bursting with flavors and spices that danced on my palate. Olivia, always the adventurous one, tried a local specialty – Berber pizza – and declared it a culinary masterpiece. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic cuisine in such a breathtaking setting.
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy. We stopped by ORINO SHOP, a local electronics store, to pick up a portable charger. I realized I had forgotten mine at the guesthouse, a rookie mistake for a travel blogger. While there, I couldn't resist buying a small, hand-painted Berber trinket as a souvenir. It will serve as a reminder of this incredible journey and will look lovely on my mantelpiece back in Heidelberg.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Chez Pierre for dinner. This restaurant is known for its innovative cuisine that fuses European and Moroccan flavors. The setting was magical, with panoramic views of the Dades Valley bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun. The food was exquisite, each dish a work of art. I particularly enjoyed the lamb tagine, cooked to perfection and infused with aromatic spices. Klaus, a connoisseur of fine wines, was impressed by the restaurant's selection of local and international vintages.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how fortunate I am to be able to experience such incredible places with my friends. The Dades Valley has a way of captivating your senses and leaving you in awe of nature's beauty. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Monkey finger viewpoint and Azrou n itbirn. I am excited to see what other wonders this magical valley has in store for us. Perhaps we will stop by Ayour cafe restaurant for a drink in the evening. As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey and the memories we are creating along the way.
It is days like this that make me appreciate the beauty and diversity of our world. From the dramatic landscapes to the warm hospitality of the local people, every moment is a gift. And as I always say, “*Reisen bildet*” (travel broadens the mind).
Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm particularly excited about visiting the Monkey finger viewpoint. I've seen photos, and the panoramic vistas seem absolutely breathtaking. I'm also intrigued by Azrou n itbirn; I read it’s a fascinating geological site. And who knows, maybe we'll find a cozy little spot like Ayour cafe restaurant to unwind in the evening. Until then, goodnight from the Dades Valley!
I must remember to buy some snacks from a local shop tomorrow, perhaps some nuts. We also need to ensure the car is in good working order for tomorrow’s journey. Perhaps a stop at a local shop will be in order.
