Finding Peace and Unexpected Art on Naoshima
Today was a day of embracing the quieter side of Naoshima, a welcome change of pace after the intensity of yesterday's museum visits. I set out to explore the island's natural and community-focused offerings, and it turned out to be a day filled with simple pleasures and unexpected artistic encounters. It's amazing how a change of scenery can shift your perspective, and today was a testament to the beauty of slowing down and appreciating the small things.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE. I wanted to try the Happy Scones I had read so much about, but I opted for the Seasonal Set Lunch, consisting of fried local Spanish mackerel with Spanish style omelette and a vast medley of fresh vegetables. It was a delightful start to the day, setting a positive tone for my explorations. The cafe itself had a homely feel, with simple furniture and smiling staff. It felt less like a dining space and more like visiting an old friend.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I headed towards Naoshima Fishing Park. The park is a bit of a trek from Miyanoura, but the promise of tranquility and coastal views spurred me on. As I arrived, the expansive green spaces and serene waterfront immediately enveloped me in a sense of calm. I'm no avid angler, but I was looking for a peaceful retreat, and the park delivered just that. I watched as a few locals cast their lines, their movements rhythmic and practiced, and I found myself simply enjoying the stillness of the morning. The gentle sea breeze, the sound of the waves, and the distant hum of a fishing boat created a soothing symphony that washed away any lingering stress. It was the perfect spot to just breathe and be present.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
After a couple of hours of soaking in the tranquility, I decided to venture back towards the main part of town, with a stop at Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu planned for the afternoon. The name itself is a playful pun, as yu (湯) means hot water in Japanese. The bathhouse, designed by artist Shinro Ohtake, is a sensory explosion. The exterior is a collage of colors and materials, a 3D scrapbook of Showa-era kitsch. It’s hard to miss, a block away from the ferry terminal.
Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the contrast between the traditional sento layout and the quirky art that adorned every surface. Before entering the bathing area, I stowed my belongings in a locker and purchased a small towel, remembering the advice I’d read about bringing your own toiletries. Fully embracing the communal spirit, I washed myself at one of the shower stations before sinking into the hot bath. And there it was – nude art viewing ! A mosaic on the wall and bottom of the bath, a succulent greenhouse and a life-size elephant statue. It was surreal, bizarre, and utterly delightful. It was a unique experience that could only exist on Naoshima, where art and daily life merge so seamlessly.

Fully refreshed, I decided to explore the local shops before dinner, and I stumbled upon Naoshima Shop Umihotaru. It was more than just a shop; it was a charming cafe with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. I settled in with a cup of local tea and a small snack, enjoying the tranquil atmosphere and the unique décor that showcased local craftsmanship. It was a perfect way to wind down after a day of exploration.

For dinner, I chose Nagomi, a restaurant located within the Naoshima welfare center. It's known for its casual dining and set meals, featuring fresh, local ingredients prepared in traditional styles. The communal canteen-like environment was a refreshing change from the more tourist-centric restaurants I had visited earlier in the trip. I ordered a set meal featuring seasonal vegetables and grilled fish, and it was simple, wholesome, and delicious.

As I walked back to My Lodge Naoshima, I reflected on the day's experiences. It wasn't about grand gestures or famous artworks; it was about the small moments of connection with nature, art, and the local community. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Walking Ark and La forêt des murmures. I'm looking forward to more unexpected encounters and quiet moments of reflection on this inspiring island.

Naoshima continues to surprise me. Klaus would have loved the fishing park, I will have to bring him back. I'm so glad I decided to venture out on my own; it's given me a chance to connect with the island in a way I wouldn't have otherwise. Perhaps sometimes the best travel experiences are the ones you don't plan too much, the ones where you simply allow yourself to be open to whatever comes your way. And who knows what tomorrow will bring? I'm ready for it.
It's moments like these that make me so grateful for this opportunity to travel and share my experiences. And as I drift off to sleep, I'm already looking forward to another day of discovery on this magical island.
