Solo Art Adventure on Naoshima Island
Day 4: Spiritual Sanctuaries and Modern Art Encounters
Exploring Naoshima's serene temples & vibrant galleries, blending tradition with contemporary art in a captivating island journey.
Finding Peace and Art in Unexpected Places
Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of the ancient and the modern that defines Naoshima. From the tranquil grounds of Gokurakuji Temple to the thought-provoking exhibits at Miyanoura Gallery 6, the island continues to surprise and inspire. It’s funny how sometimes the most profound experiences come from the places you least expect.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at maimai. Fuelled up, I set out to explore some of the island's more spiritual and artistic corners, eager to see what hidden gems I might uncover. The weather was kind, a gentle breeze rustling through the trees, making it a perfect day for exploration. September in Naoshima is quite pleasant, not too hot, with a refreshing breeze that makes walking around the island a joy. It reminds me a little of early autumn in Heidelberg, though with a uniquely Japanese twist.
Gokurakuji Temple: A Journey to Serenity
My first stop was Gokurakuji Temple. Nestled on a small hill, the temple exuded an aura of peace that was immediately calming. As I approached, the gentle ascent up the hill prepared me for the tranquil sanctuary that awaited. The lush greenery surrounding the temple provided a serene backdrop, inviting contemplation and reflection. I must admit, I found myself thinking of my garden back in Heidelberg, wondering how Klaus was managing with the hydrangeas. He always complains about them, but I know he secretly enjoys tending to them.
The temple itself dates back to the early Heian period, around 850 AD, and belongs to the Koyasan Shingon sect. The main hall and gate, with their Edo period architecture, are recognized as cultural treasures of Naoshima Town. The traditional Japanese design elements have stood the test of time, showcasing a humble yet striking beauty. Taking my time to explore the grounds, I admired the intricate details of the structures and the serene gardens that reflected the simplicity and beauty of Japanese aesthetics.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Inside the temple, I took a moment to appreciate the ceiling paintings, recognizing their high historical value. The air was still and quiet, save for the occasional rustling of leaves. I lit a small incense stick, offering a silent prayer for health and happiness for my family. It’s moments like these that make me appreciate the simple things in life. I remember when Olivia was little, she would always try to blow out the incense sticks, thinking they were candles on a cake. How time flies!
Before leaving, I explored the surrounding area, discovering Hachiman Shrine and Goo Shrine on the eastern mountain. It was a peaceful way to start the day, grounding myself in the spiritual heart of the island. I even saw some cherry blossom trees, even though it's not quite the season for them. I can only imagine how beautiful it must be here in mid-March when they are in full bloom.
Miyanoura Gallery 6: Art in a Former Pachinko Parlor
From the tranquility of Gokurakuji Temple, I headed to Miyanoura Gallery 6. This gallery is located in the Miyanoura District and is housed in a renovated pachinko parlor. It’s a fascinating example of how art can breathe new life into unexpected spaces.

Architect Taira Nishizawa transformed the former amusement arcade, “Pachinko 999 (Three Nine),” into a space where visitors and locals can come together and relax. The original facade of the pachinko parlor has been preserved to maintain a sense of familiarity for the local community. The transformation is remarkable, blending the old with the new in a way that feels both respectful and innovative.
Since 2019, the gallery has been the site of an ongoing project by artist Motoyuki Shitamichi called Setouchi Archive. This living laboratory showcases rotating exhibits that document various aspects of the region's history, such as tourism, industry, and local photographers. The current exhibit, “Artist at Gallery 6 2016,” features “100 Living Tales” by Yuki Iiyama.
As I entered, I found myself on a wooden boardwalk lined with placards, each bearing a short story in both Japanese and English. Iiyama asked residents of the Okayama and Kagawa prefectures a simple question: “Have you ever experienced anything strange or unexplainable on the island?”. The responses were intriguing, offering a glimpse into the values, culture, and mystical beliefs of the islanders.
The interior of the gallery is bathed in natural sunlight, thanks to the approximately 400 louvers installed on the ceiling. This creates a unique viewing experience, as the light changes throughout the day, altering the atmosphere of the space. I spent a good hour reading the stories, watching the short films, and reflecting on the power of storytelling as an art form. I must say, it was one of the most captivating exhibitions I have seen, and I am glad I was able to understand the stories.
Culinary Delights: A Taste of Naoshima
After immersing myself in art and spirituality, it was time to indulge in some local cuisine. For lunch, I headed to Kinosaki Udon Naoshima. This udon shop is a culinary gem, known for its authentic Japanese cuisine and warm, welcoming atmosphere.

As I stepped inside, the tantalizing aroma of freshly prepared noodles filled the air. I decided to try their most popular dish, the “Niku Udon” (meat udon). The firm, chewy noodles were perfectly complemented by the rich broth, infused with the savory flavor of sweet and salty simmered beef. It was an irresistible and comforting taste that kept me coming back for more. I also chose a side dish of chikuwa, which paired perfectly with the udon.
For dinner, I ventured to Raumen Tsumu, a local gem known for its delicious and affordable meals. This family-owned restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and an English menu, making it accessible for tourists. I decided to try their spicy curry ramen, which came highly recommended. The flavors were bold and satisfying, with the perfect level of spice. It was a delightful way to end the day, savoring the authentic tastes of Naoshima.

Evening Reflections at Cin.na.mon
To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Cin.na.mon, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. Nestled in Naoshima’s serene streetscape, Cin.na.mon features a warm, wood-based design that exudes simplicity and charm. The interior is bright and open, with wooden furnishings that create a cozy, natural vibe.

I ordered a local craft beer and sat at the bar, chatting with some of the locals. They were incredibly welcoming and shared stories about the island’s history and culture. It was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day’s experiences. Cin.na.mon is definitely a place I would recommend to anyone looking to experience the local vibe of Naoshima.
As I walked back to My Lodge Naoshima, the stars were out, twinkling in the night sky. The island was quiet, peaceful, and filled with a sense of magic. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Naoshima Fishing Park and the Naoshima Public Bath “I Love Yu”. It’s going to be another day of exploration, discovery, and immersion in the unique culture of this enchanting island. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
