Bab El Ain and Beyond: A Saturday in the Blue Pearl
Today was a day to get truly lost in the beauty of Chefchaouen. After several days of exploring, I felt more confident venturing off the beaten path with my friends, eager to uncover some of the town's hidden gems. We knew today would be special, but I don't think any of us were prepared for the sensory overload of colors, sounds, and flavors that awaited us.
Our morning started as usual, with a delightful breakfast at Cremeri Elmaataoui. I went with Franjo's recommendation and ordered avocado juice with fruit. The mix of flavors was so refreshing, perfectly setting the tone for a day of exploration. We reminisced about our lives back in Germany, about Fatima teaching Arabic to children and Omar's endless energy playing football. It felt good to be away, even just for a little while, experiencing something completely different.

First on our itinerary was Bab El Ain, one of the main entrances to the Chefchaouen Medina. As we approached, the weathered brown walls stood in stark contrast to the vibrant blue that awaited us inside. The name 'Bab El Ain' translates to 'The Gate of the Spring,' and indeed, it felt like entering a new world. The gate acted as a dividing point between the colonial side of Chefchaouen and the old town. Just outside the gate, vendors were selling everything from cactus fruit to hot chickpea cake. We took some photos, soaking in the atmosphere before stepping through the archway.

Once inside, we wandered through the maze of narrow, winding streets. The blue-washed walls created a serene backdrop, and every corner revealed a new photo opportunity. The shops were filled with handmade crafts, spices, and local delicacies. The craftsmanship was incredible, with intricate designs adorning everything from pottery to textiles.
The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue-washed walls, but in the warmth and hospitality of its people.
We had arranged a tour with Blue Medina Tours, and it proved to be an excellent decision. Our guide, whose name I unfortunately can't recall, was a wealth of knowledge about the history and culture of Chefchaouen. He took us to places we never would have found on our own, sharing stories and anecdotes that brought the town to life. He explained how Chefchaouen, founded in the 15th century, served as a bastion of the Sultan in his resistance against the Portuguese. For a long time, Christians were forbidden from entering, but Jews were always welcomed.

One of the highlights of the tour was learning about the significance of the blue color. While there are several theories, our guide explained that it was initially introduced by Jewish refugees in the 1930s, who believed the blue dye would remind them of God and the sky. Over time, the tradition spread, and now the entire town is awash in various shades of blue. It's truly a sight to behold.
For lunch, we stopped at MIDO'S, a small eatery that came highly recommended. It's a tiny hole in the wall with only a few tables, but the food was incredible. I had the vegan falafel, which was fresh and flavorful. Fatima and my friends tried the burgers and pasta, and everyone raved about their meals. The prices were incredibly reasonable, making it a perfect spot for a quick and satisfying lunch. Mido’s location is near the Grand Mosque.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in some shopping. Our guide recommended Jabir shop chefchaouen, a local shop known for its unique, handmade items. Jabir Shop showcases the rich craftsmanship and cultural heritage of Morocco. As we wandered through the shop, we were greeted by the warm hospitality of the owner, who shared stories about the products and the artisans who created them. I picked up a beautiful handwoven rug for our living room back in Bielefeld, and Fatima found a delicate piece of jewelry.

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way to Restaurant Hamsa for dinner. Located near the Kasbah, Hamsa has a rooftop terrace that offers breathtaking views of the city. The staff was incredibly friendly, and the food was delicious. I ordered the tagine, a traditional Moroccan dish, and it was bursting with flavor. My friends tried the couscous and pastries, and we shared a pot of mint tea as we watched the sunset over the blue city. Hamsa’s Moroccan cuisine is inspired by family recipes and travels around the world.

The conversations flowed easily as we sat on the rooftop, the cool evening air providing a welcome relief from the day's heat. We talked about our favorite moments from the trip so far, and how different this experience was from our everyday lives in Germany. It was a reminder of why we travel – to broaden our horizons, connect with different cultures, and create lasting memories with friends.
As we walked back to Riad Zaitouna Chaouen, the city was bathed in the soft glow of the streetlights. The sounds of music and laughter drifted from the cafes, and the air was filled with the aroma of spices and grilling meat. I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Chefchaouen had captured my heart with its beauty, its culture, and its people.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of the natural beauty surrounding Chefchaouen. The itinerary includes a visit to vue panoramique de la plage and Park Sidi Abdelhamid, offering different perspectives of the region's landscape. We're planning to have breakfast at Cafe Clock, lunch at Restaurant Jbaria, and dinner at Chez Hicham. Perhaps we'll even stop by Café Mundial for a drink. I'm eager to see what new adventures await us.
Before I turn in for the night, I realize I forgot to pack my sunglasses. I'll need to remember to pick up a pair tomorrow. Good night from Chefchaouen!
