First Day in the Blue Pearl

After a long journey from Bielefeld, Germany, via Tangier, I’ve finally arrived in Chefchaouen, Morocco, with my friends. The drive was scenic, offering glimpses of the Rif Mountains, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer beauty of this blue-washed city. My camera is already working overtime, and I can tell this trip will be one for the books.

The first day of our Moroccan adventure began with a smooth flight from Germany to Tangier. The excitement was palpable as we collected our bags and met our driver, who would take us on the winding roads to Chefchaouen. The landscape shifted dramatically as we ascended into the Rif Mountains, trading the coastal plains for rugged, green hills. The air grew fresher, carrying the scent of pine and earth. After a couple of hours, the first hints of blue began to appear – a rooftop here, a wall there – teasing us with what was to come. And then, we arrived, and Chefchaouen unfolded before us in all its azure glory. It was even more magical than I had imagined.

Our riad, the Riad Zaitouna Chaouen, proved to be a perfect haven. The traditional Moroccan architecture, combined with modern comforts, offered a serene retreat from the bustling streets. After settling in, we were eager to dive into the heart of the Blue Pearl: the Medina.

Exploring the Chefchaouen Medina

The Chefchaouen Medina is a maze of narrow alleyways, each painted in varying shades of blue. It felt like stepping into a dream. The effect is both calming and invigorating, a visual feast that’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Sunlight filters through the narrow gaps between buildings, casting intricate shadows on the blue walls. Every corner turned revealed a new, picture-perfect scene – a doorway framed by vibrant bougainvillea, a stack of colorful spices, or a local artisan crafting leather goods.

I wandered with my friends, camera in hand, trying to capture the essence of this magical place. It's impossible to resist snapping photos at every turn. The locals were incredibly welcoming, often smiling and offering a friendly Bonjour as we passed. Despite the language barrier, communication felt easy, often relying on gestures and shared smiles. I even managed to practice a little of the German I know with a shop owner!

Wandering through Chefchaouen is like stepping into a dream, where every corner reveals a new shade of blue and a story waiting to be discovered.

We made our way to Place Outa el Hammam, the central square of the Medina. This bustling hub is surrounded by cafes and restaurants, offering a perfect spot to soak in the atmosphere. The square is also home to the Kasbah, a historic fortress that beckoned us with its imposing presence.

A Visit to the Kasbah

The Kasbah of Chefchaouen, built in the 15th century, stands as a testament to the city's rich history. Originally constructed to defend against Portuguese incursions, it has served as a residence for governors, a military arsenal, and even a prison. Today, it’s a beautifully restored monument that offers panoramic views of the city.

Exploring the Kasbah, we climbed the sturdy towers and walked along the ramparts, taking in the breathtaking vistas of Chefchaouen and the surrounding Rif Mountains. The red-tiled roofs contrasted beautifully with the blue-washed walls, creating a stunning visual tapestry. Inside, we visited the Ethnographic Museum, which provided fascinating insights into the local culture and traditions. From traditional costumes to ancient musical instruments, each exhibit told a story of Chefchaouen's past.

The Kasbah is not only a historical site but also a place of tranquility. The central courtyard, with its lush gardens and serene atmosphere, provided a welcome respite from the bustling Medina. We sat for a while, enjoying the peace and quiet, before venturing back into the vibrant streets.

Lunch at Chez Hicham

By lunchtime, our appetites were calling, and we decided to try Chez Hicham, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant, located near Place Outa el Hammam, offered a delightful menu of traditional dishes. I opted for the chicken tagine with lemon and olives, while my friends chose the couscous and grilled meats.

The tagine arrived in a traditional earthenware pot, the aroma of spices filling the air. The chicken was tender and flavorful, the lemon and olives adding a zesty tang. My friends raved about their dishes as well, each bite a burst of Moroccan flavors. We savored every morsel, accompanied by freshly baked Moroccan bread and refreshing mint tea.

The atmosphere at Chez Hicham was warm and inviting, the staff friendly and attentive. The rooftop terrace offered stunning views of the Medina, making our lunch even more memorable. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel before continuing our exploration.

Shopping at CHAOUEN GIFTS

No trip to Chefchaouen would be complete without indulging in some shopping, so after lunch, we ventured into CHAOUEN GIFTS, a shop known for its unique souvenirs and local crafts. The shop was a treasure trove of handmade items, from colorful pottery to intricate textiles. I was particularly drawn to the blue pottery, which perfectly captured the essence of the city.

I spent a good hour browsing the shop, admiring the craftsmanship and haggling (good-naturedly, of course) with the shopkeeper. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted bowl and a set of ceramic coasters, perfect mementos of our time in Chefchaouen. My friends found an assortment of leather goods and traditional clothing, each a unique reminder of our Moroccan adventure.

The experience at CHAOUEN GIFTS was more than just shopping; it was a chance to connect with the local culture and support the artisans who keep the traditions alive. The shopkeeper shared stories about the crafts and the history behind them, adding a personal touch to our purchases.

Dinner at Restaurant Al Wiam

As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the blue city, we made our way to Restaurant Al Wiam for dinner. This restaurant, known for its authentic Moroccan dishes and stunning views, was the perfect place to end our first day in Chefchaouen.

The restaurant was bustling with activity, the air filled with the aroma of tagines and grilled meats. We were lucky to snag a table on the terrace, which offered panoramic views of the Medina. I ordered the lamb tagine with prunes and almonds, while my friends opted for the couscous with vegetables and the grilled chicken.

The lamb tagine was a symphony of flavors, the tender meat complemented by the sweetness of the prunes and the crunch of the almonds. My friends were equally impressed with their dishes, each a testament to the culinary richness of Morocco. We savored every bite, accompanied by lively conversation and the enchanting sounds of the city.

“Travel makes you realize that no matter how much you know, there’s always more to learn.”

The service at Restaurant Al Wiam was impeccable, the staff attentive and friendly. They made us feel welcome and shared recommendations for local dishes and attractions. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

As I sit here, writing this blog post from our riad, I can’t help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. Chefchaouen has already captured my heart with its beauty, culture, and warm hospitality. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Ras El Ma, where the fresh mountain springs meet the local life, and Place El Haouta, eager to explore more of this enchanting city. I'm also hoping to find a power adapter, as I forgot mine and am running low on battery! It’s a small hiccup in what has otherwise been a flawless first day. I can’t wait to see what adventures tomorrow brings.

Chefchaouen is more than just a pretty picture; it’s a living, breathing testament to the beauty of cultural exchange and the power of human connection. I am so glad I came here with my friends, and I am looking forward to sharing more of my experiences with you all.

Until tomorrow,
Mohamed Ali
