Kotam and Trohbu: A Day of Discovery

Today was a day dedicated to experiencing the cultural heart and natural beauty surrounding Buon Ma Thuot. I ventured out to explore the Kotam Community Resort and Trohbu Botanic Garden, two destinations that offered unique insights into the local heritage and the region's stunning flora. It was a day filled with rich experiences, delicious food, and a deeper connection to this fascinating part of Vietnam.

My day began with breakfast at Quán Ăn Phú Nhi. I decided to try Bún bò Huế, a spicy beef noodle soup, which was recommended by my host. It was a flavorful start to the day, and I enjoyed watching the locals go about their morning routines as I ate. The broth was rich and aromatic, a perfect blend of spicy, sour, and savory flavors that woke me up and prepared me for the day's adventures.

Next on the agenda was the Kotam Community Resort. The resort is about 8 kilometers from the city center. As I arrived, I was immediately struck by the serene atmosphere and the beautiful landscaping. Vibrant flowers, tranquil lakes, and traditional wooden architecture created a welcoming and immersive environment. Kotam is known for its dedication to preserving and showcasing the cultural heritage of the Central Highlands. I spent a good part of the morning exploring the traditional performances and handicrafts on display, gaining a deeper appreciation for the traditions and history of the region.

I wandered through the areas dedicated to traditional performances and handicrafts, connecting with the heritage of the area. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and eager to share stories about the traditions and history of Buon Ma Thuot, enriching my understanding of the local culture. I also explored the traditional long houses, which offered a glimpse into the lifestyle of the Ede ethnic group. The architecture and design were fascinating, reflecting the deep connection between the people and their environment. Wandering through the resort, I felt a sense of peace and connection to the local culture.

To travel is to take a journey into yourself.

For lunch, I headed to Nhà Hàng - Khách Sạn Hoàng Kiêm Ban Mê, a restaurant known for its local Dak Lak cuisine. I opted for a cơm lam (bamboo rice) and gà nướng (grilled chicken). The chicken was tender and flavorful, marinated in local spices that gave it a unique taste. The bamboo rice was equally delicious, cooked inside a bamboo tube, which imparted a subtle, woody aroma to the rice. It was a satisfying and authentic meal that provided a true taste of the Central Highlands.

In the afternoon, I visited the Trohbu Botanic Garden, about 10 kilometers west of Buon Ma Thuot. Established in 1995, the garden was originally intended as a botanical garden but later evolved into a sanctuary for rare wild orchids. As someone who appreciates nature, I was excited to see the diverse collection of orchids and other plant species. The garden is home to the largest collection of wild orchids in Vietnam. I was amazed by the variety of colors, shapes, and sizes of the orchids, each one a unique work of art. The garden also features a variety of other indigenous plants and flowers, making it a haven for nature lovers. I spent hours wandering through the garden, taking photos and enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. According to the Ede language, Trohbu means stream goby valley.

As I explored, I learned about the efforts to preserve and cultivate these delicate plants, which are an important part of the region's biodiversity. The garden is not only a place of beauty but also a center for research and conservation, playing a vital role in protecting the natural heritage of the Central Highlands. The Trohbu Botanic Garden is located in Ea Nuol Commune.

Before heading back to the city, I decided to stop by Ngã 6 Pub for a drink. This pub is located at a major intersection in Buon Ma Thuot, offering a great view of the city. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and Latin music, it was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploration. I enjoyed a cold beer while listening to the music and watching the city come alive in the evening. It was a lively and enjoyable experience, a great way to cap off a fulfilling day.

For dinner, I chose Thịt Trâu Vi Tiệp, a restaurant specializing in water buffalo meat dishes. I had heard great things about their grilled water buffalo with lemongrass, so I decided to give it a try. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, infused with the aromatic essence of lemongrass. It was served with fresh herbs and dipping sauces that complemented the dish perfectly. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making it a great place to enjoy a hearty meal.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in the cultural and natural wonders of Buon Ma Thuot. The Kotam Community Resort and Trohbu Botanic Garden offered unique perspectives on the region's heritage and biodiversity, while the local restaurants provided a taste of authentic Dak Lak cuisine. It was a day of discovery, connection, and appreciation, one that I will cherish for years to come.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Bee Stream Tourist Area and Serepok Garden. I’m also hoping to do some shopping at LaMy shop. It’s hard to believe that my journey is already nearing its halfway point. I am so looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings!

It is interesting to compare the culture here to the Libyan culture I grew up in. The food is quite different, but the hospitality is very similar. I am reminded of home in many ways, even though I am thousands of miles away. I am also finding that my German language skills are coming in handy when communicating with some of the locals, which is a pleasant surprise.

I’m also thinking about Fatima and Omar back in Bielefeld. I know they would love to experience the beauty of this place. Perhaps one day, we can all come back together. I know Omar would especially love the botanical garden. He has always had a fascination with plants and animals. Maybe this trip will inspire me to start a small garden when I return to Germany. I can already imagine planting some herbs and vegetables, bringing a little piece of Vietnam back home with me.

I’m starting to feel more confident traveling alone. It’s a different experience than traveling with family, but it’s also very rewarding. I am learning to rely on myself and trust my instincts. This trip is not just about seeing new places; it’s also about personal growth and self-discovery. As I continue my journey, I am excited to see what other lessons and experiences await me. I hope to continue to share these experiences with you all. Thank you for following along!
