Whispers of the Past

Today in Shirakawa-go was like stepping into a living postcard. The beauty of the gassho-zukuri farmhouses, the warmth of the locals, and the serene atmosphere made it a day I’ll cherish forever. It's incredible how a place can feel so untouched by time, offering a sense of peace and connection to history that's hard to find anywhere else.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Yamamotoya. I remember reading about it online, and it did not disappoint. As I savored the traditional Japanese breakfast, consisting of grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables, I couldn't help but reflect on how different this was from my usual morning routine back in Bielefeld. Fatima would have loved this place! I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes back home, bringing a little piece of Shirakawa-go to our kitchen.

After breakfast, I made my way to Ogimachi, the heart of Shirakawa-go. The village was even more breathtaking in person than in the photos I had seen. The iconic gassho-zukuri farmhouses, with their steeply pitched thatched roofs, stood proudly against the backdrop of lush green rice paddies. It felt surreal, like walking through a meticulously crafted movie set. I spent hours wandering through the village, camera in hand, trying to capture the essence of this unique place. Every corner offered a new perspective, a new detail to admire. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of damp earth and blooming flowers.

I met a local artisan who was crafting traditional straw sandals. He spoke no English, and my Japanese was limited to a few polite phrases, but we communicated through smiles and gestures. He showed me how he meticulously wove the straw, his hands moving with practiced ease. I bought a pair of the sandals as a souvenir, a tangible reminder of this encounter.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments.

For lunch, I decided to try Masuzono Bunsuke, a local restaurant known for its soba noodles. The restaurant was small and cozy, with only a few tables. I ordered the house specialty, cold soba noodles with a dipping sauce made from locally sourced ingredients. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the dipping sauce was bursting with flavor. It was a refreshing and satisfying meal, perfect for a warm summer day. As I ate, I watched the locals chatting and laughing, their voices a comforting background hum. It struck me how much I enjoyed these simple, authentic experiences, far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life.

In the afternoon, I visited the Myozenji Museum. Housed in a beautifully preserved gassho-zukuri farmhouse, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the history and culture of Shirakawa-go. I learned about the unique architectural techniques used to build the farmhouses, the traditional farming practices of the region, and the daily lives of the people who lived here for generations. One exhibit that particularly caught my attention was a collection of old photographs, depicting life in Shirakawa-go in the early 20th century. It was amazing to see how much the village had changed, and yet how much it had stayed the same.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the village, I found myself at Shiraogi, a cozy little bar. I decided to treat myself to a glass of local sake. The bar was dimly lit and filled with the murmur of conversation. I struck up a conversation with a local man who was sitting next to me. He was eager to share his knowledge of the area, recommending several hidden gems that were not mentioned in any of the tourist guides. He told me stories about the history of Shirakawa-go, the legends and myths that were passed down through generations. It was fascinating to hear these stories from someone who had lived here his entire life.

For dinner, I chose Zensuke, a restaurant specializing in local Hida beef. It was a bit of a splurge, but I figured I deserved it after a long day of exploring. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with every bite. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day. As I walked back to my ryokan under the starlit sky, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. Shirakawa-go had exceeded all my expectations. It was a place of beauty, history, and warmth, a place that had touched my heart in a way that few other places have.

Tomorrow, I plan to immerse myself further in nature at the Nature Forest and explore the Hida no Sato Open Air Museum. I'm looking forward to more culinary delights, starting with breakfast at Shiawaseya Kichibei, lunch at Soba dojo Restaurant, and dinner at Hiiragi. I might even pick up a souvenir at Kobikiya. It's hard to believe this journey is only beginning. I am so grateful for this opportunity to explore such a unique and beautiful part of the world. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

As I close out the day, I'm reminded of why I started this travel blog in the first place. It's not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with people, experiencing different cultures, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. And Shirakawa-go has certainly delivered on all fronts. It's a place that I will carry with me long after I leave, a place that has reminded me of the beauty and simplicity of life. I can't wait to share more of my adventures with you all. Goodnight from Shirakawa-go!
