Day 1: A Journey Back in Time: Discovering the Heart of Shirakawa-go
Step back in time in Shirakawa-go! Explore ancient temples, traditional farmhouses, and savor local flavors on this immersive cultural journey.
Whispers of the Past
Arriving in Shirakawa-go felt like stepping into a living postcard. The air was fresh, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant woodsmoke, a welcome change from the digital hum of Bielefeld. I was eager to explore this UNESCO World Heritage site, to lose myself in its history and capture its timeless beauty through my lens. My first day was packed with cultural immersion, a deep dive into the heart of traditional Japan, and I couldn't wait to share it all with you.
The journey here was smooth, the train ride from Tokyo offering stunning views of the Japanese countryside. I made a mental note to bring Fatima and Omar here someday; they would absolutely love it. But for now, this solo adventure was exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with myself and the world around me, far from the demands of IT support and family life.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Shirakawago Restaurant Irori. The charming eatery, with its rustic decor, was the perfect introduction to the local cuisine. I settled into the experience with a traditional Japanese breakfast, which featured grilled tofu, wild plants, and seasonal vegetables. The hoba miso pork was a standout, offering a deep, sweet, and nutty flavor that paired perfectly with the local Hida pork. Fuelled up and ready, I set off to explore.
The past is never dead. It's not even past.
My first stop was Myozenji, a serene and beautiful temple that exudes a sense of peace. The temple's main hall, with its unique thatched roof, was truly impressive. I wandered through the grounds, admiring the intricate details of the architecture and the lush greenery surrounding the temple. It was a perfect spot for reflection, a moment to appreciate the simple beauty of life. The temple's connection to the Shinkyu Honkakuji Temple branch adds to its historical significance, dating back to 1748. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of this tranquil place, hoping to share its serenity with you.

Next, I ventured to Shirakawa-go Gassho-Zukuri Minka-en, an open-air museum showcasing the traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses that define this region. Walking through the museum felt like stepping back in time. Each farmhouse told a story of a different era, offering a glimpse into the lives of the people who once lived here. I was particularly fascinated by the intricate construction of the roofs, designed to withstand the heavy snowfall of the region. The museum has 25 gassho-zukuri houses, a watermill, a shrine, and ponds, and lots of pretty trees. The traditional houses, relocated here from other settlements, have been arranged as a small village. Exploring the interiors of some of the houses, I was struck by the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the people who built them.

For lunch, I headed to Soba Wakimoto, a local restaurant known for its delicious soba noodles. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to taste their signature dishes. I ordered a bowl of cold soba with tempura, a refreshing and satisfying meal on a warm day. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the tempura was light and crispy. It was a delightful culinary experience, a taste of authentic Japanese cuisine. I savored every bite, enjoying the lively atmosphere of the restaurant.

After lunch, I decided to do some shopping at Sanrakudo, a local shop offering a variety of traditional crafts and souvenirs. I browsed through the displays, admiring the intricate details of the handcrafted items. I picked up a few small gifts for Fatima and Omar, tokens of my journey to this enchanting place. The shop was filled with unique treasures, each telling a story of the region's rich cultural heritage. The manager of the store was born in Ogimachi in 1948 and greeted me with a big smile.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Tenshukaku for dinner, a restaurant offering stunning views of the Shirakawa village. The restaurant is a stunning world heritage site that offers breathtaking views of the entire Shirakawa village. I enjoyed a delicious meal while watching the sunset over the picturesque landscape. It was a perfect end to a perfect day, a moment to reflect on all that I had experienced. The weather today was typical for July in Shirakawa-go, with high temperatures and a chance of rain. Fortunately, the rain held off, allowing me to explore the village without any interruptions. I was grateful for the opportunity to experience this beautiful place in all its glory. I did remember that I forgot my umbrella, which would have come in handy.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Shirakawa-go, including Ogimachi and the Myozenji Museum. I'm also looking forward to trying some local sake at Shiraogi, a popular bar in the village. I can't wait to see what new adventures await me, and I'm excited to share them with you.
