Island Fruits and Waterfall Wonders

Today was a delightful blend of tropical flavors and natural grandeur. Yakushima continues to surprise and enchant us with its unique offerings. From exploring exotic fruits to witnessing a powerful waterfall, it was a day filled with memorable experiences. Aishath, Ibrahim, and I ventured out, eager to see what hidden gems the island had in store for us.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Michikusa. The restaurant had a cozy, local vibe. It was a great way to fuel up for the day's adventures. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set. Aishath chose a lighter option, and Ibrahim, of course, went for the familiar comfort of rice and miso soup. It's these simple, shared meals that really bring us together, no matter where we are in the world.

After breakfast, we set off for the Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato”. As someone who grew up surrounded by tropical fruits in the Maldives, I was particularly excited to see what this garden had to offer. The drive itself was scenic, with lush greenery on both sides of the road, typical of Yakushima's landscape. Upon arriving, we were greeted by a charming, somewhat Bali-style entrance. The air was filled with the sweet scents of various fruits, instantly transporting me back to my childhood days in Naifaru.

The garden was home to nearly 2,000 varieties of tropical plants and fruits. We saw bananas, mangoes, papayas, guavas, and other exotic fruits growing in abundance. I was particularly fascinated by some of the lesser-known species, like the Jaboticaba, which fruits directly on its trunk. Ibrahim was thrilled to see where his favorite fruits come from, pointing and exclaiming at every new discovery. Aishath, with her nursing background, was interested in the nutritional aspects of each fruit, reading the informational plaques with keen interest. We spent a good hour wandering through the garden, taking in the sights and smells, and learning about the cultivation of these tropical treasures. The owner, Mr. Iwakawa, even gave us a short tour, pointing out various plants and flowers. At the end of the tour, we sampled a generous plate of seasonal tropical fruits. The flavors were so fresh and vibrant, a true taste of Yakushima's bounty.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.

Leaving the fruit garden, our next destination was the Ohko Waterfall. Known as the largest waterfall on Yakushima, it's also listed as one of Japan's 100 Great Waterfalls. The anticipation built as we drove closer, the sound of rushing water growing louder with each turn. The parking area was conveniently located near the waterfall, making it easily accessible. Even the short walk to the viewing point was a treat, with the path winding through a small forest, the air thick with moisture and the scent of damp earth.

As we rounded the final bend, the waterfall came into full view. It was magnificent. The water cascaded down from an 88-meter-high cliff, the force of it creating a misty spray that enveloped the area. The sight was truly spectacular. Ibrahim was in awe, his eyes wide as he watched the water plummet into the pool below. Aishath and I stood hand in hand, marveling at the power and beauty of nature. The waterfall was more impressive in person than any photo could capture. The sheer volume of water and the thunderous roar created an immersive experience that resonated deep within us.

We spent a long time simply watching the waterfall, feeling the cool spray on our faces. I tried to capture the scene with my camera, but it was impossible to convey the true essence of the place through a lens. It was a moment to be experienced, not just photographed. We even walked closer to the base of the waterfall, navigating the rocks and roots, to feel the full force of the water's energy. The experience was invigorating, a reminder of the raw power of nature and its ability to inspire and rejuvenate.

For lunch, we headed to Wakadaisho, a restaurant known for its fresh seafood. The place was bustling with locals and tourists alike, a testament to its popularity. Fortunately, we had made a reservation, so we were seated promptly. I decided to try the local sashimi platter, eager to taste the freshest catch of the day. Aishath opted for a grilled fish dish, and Ibrahim, ever the adventurous eater, chose the chicken karaage. The sashimi was exquisite, each piece melting in my mouth with a burst of flavor. Aishath's grilled fish was cooked to perfection, tender and flaky. Even Ibrahim, who usually prefers familiar flavors, thoroughly enjoyed his karaage, declaring it the best he had ever tasted. The friendly staff and the lively atmosphere added to the overall dining experience, making it a truly memorable meal.

In the evening, we decided to try Subarashi Indian Restaurant for dinner. It felt a bit surreal to be having Indian food in Japan, but we were curious to see how it would compare to the flavors we know and love. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting ambiance, and the aroma of spices filled the air. We ordered a variety of vegetarian curries, specifying that we wanted them made vegan. The food was delicious, the flavors authentic and well-balanced. It was a pleasant surprise to find such a gem on this remote island. The staff were friendly and accommodating, making us feel right at home.

After dinner, I decided to check out Ganta, a local bar known for staying open late. Aishath and Ibrahim were tired from the day's adventures, so they headed back to our accommodation. Ganta had a lively atmosphere, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying drinks and conversation. I ordered a local craft beer and struck up a conversation with a friendly Japanese man who shared some interesting insights about Yakushima's history and culture. It was a great way to unwind after a long day and to connect with the local community.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Kigensugi Cedar and Senpiro Falls. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the ancient cedar, a symbol of Yakushima's enduring natural heritage. It’s amazing to experience the cultural diversity here in Japan. Reflecting on today, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences we've had. Yakushima continues to impress us with its natural beauty and unique charm. It's a place where you can truly connect with nature and create lasting memories with your loved ones. As we prepare for another day of exploration, I'm excited to see what other wonders await us on this enchanting island.
