A Day of Island Magic

Today was a day of simple pleasures and deeper connections here in Dhigurah. It's amazing how a small island can offer so much in terms of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and, most importantly, moments that bring you closer to your loved ones. From making wishes to soaking up the sun and savoring the local cuisine, today was a perfect blend of what makes Dhigurah so special.

Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Senses. It was a delightful way to kick things off. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the menu was a fusion of Maldivian and international flavors. Aishath particularly enjoyed the Mas Huni, a traditional Maldivian breakfast made with shredded smoked tuna, coconut, and onions. Ibrahim, of course, went straight for the pancakes. I opted for a classic omelet, fueling up for the day’s adventures.

After breakfast, our first stop was the Tree of Wishes. It's a local landmark where visitors write their wishes on colorful ribbons and tie them to the tree's branches. The walk there was pleasant, a slow wander through the island’s sandy paths, observing the local life unfolding around us. We passed by homes with gardens overflowing with bougainvillea and hibiscus, their vibrant colors a stark contrast to the white sand.

When we arrived, the tree was a mesmerizing sight, adorned with countless ribbons fluttering in the breeze. The kids were fascinated by the sheer number of wishes, each one representing someone's hopes and dreams. We each took a ribbon and wrote down our wishes. Aishath wished for continued health and happiness for our family. Ibrahim wished for a new bicycle, naturally. As for me, I wished for the strength to always cherish these moments with my family and to continue sharing the beauty of the Maldives with the world. Tying our ribbons to the tree, I felt a sense of connection to everyone who had come before us, all sharing in the universal act of hoping.

Wishing is not just about wanting something; it's about believing in the possibility of a better future.

Next on our itinerary was the famous North West Beach - Bikini Beach. Known for its pristine white sands and clear turquoise waters, it’s a must-visit. As we walked along the shore, the soft sand squished beneath our feet, and the gentle sea breeze carried the scent of salt and sunshine. Ibrahim was immediately drawn to the water, eager to build sandcastles and splash around.

Aishath and I found a shady spot under a palm tree and watched Ibrahim play. The beach was relatively quiet, allowing us to relax and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. I took some photographs, trying to capture the beauty of the moment – the vibrant colors of the sea, the white sand, and the joy on Ibrahim's face. It’s moments like these that I want to hold on to forever.

We spent a few hours swimming and sunbathing. The water was so clear that we could see small fish darting around our feet. Ibrahim even tried his hand at snorkeling, though he mostly just ended up splashing Aishath. It was all in good fun, and we laughed until our stomachs hurt.

For lunch, we headed to The Chef. This restaurant is known for its fusion of Maldivian and international cuisine, and it certainly didn't disappoint. Aishath ordered a traditional Maldivian curry, while I opted for grilled fish. Ibrahim, ever predictable, chose a burger. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. We sat on the outdoor terrace, enjoying the view of the island as we ate.

After lunch, we decided to do a bit of shopping at NIRU DHIGURAH. I wanted to find some souvenirs to take back home to Toronto. The shop had a variety of local products, from handmade crafts to spices and snacks. I bought a few small wooden carvings and some packets of Maldivian chili paste. Aishath found a beautiful handwoven mat that she plans to use in our living room.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Vilamendhoo Ahima Buffet Restaurant for dinner. Although Vilamendhoo is a separate island resort, the Ahima Buffet Restaurant is a must-visit for its extensive selection of international cuisine. The restaurant is adults-only , so Ibrahim was not able to join us. Aishath and I enjoyed a quiet dinner together, reminiscing about our day and savoring the delicious food.

The buffet was incredible, with dishes from all over the world. There was fresh seafood, pasta, curries, and a variety of desserts. I particularly enjoyed the Maldivian fish curry, while Aishath raved about the pasta station. The atmosphere was elegant and relaxed, making it a perfect end to our day.

As we prepare for tomorrow, I am looking forward to exploring the Equatorial forest and the Longisland Sandbank. I've heard that the forest is a unique ecosystem with diverse plant and animal life , and the sandbank is a stunning stretch of white sand surrounded by crystal-clear waters. We plan to have breakfast at Hawaii Foods and lunch at MIXE, formerly known as The Island Kitchen. In the evening, we might check out East Bar for a relaxing drink.

Dhigurah continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. It is a place where you can truly disconnect from the stresses of everyday life and reconnect with what matters most: family, nature, and simple joys. It is a reminder that the most precious moments are often found in the most unexpected places.

I feel so grateful to be able to share this experience with my family and to share it with all of you. Until tomorrow, keep exploring and keep dreaming.
