A Day of Thrills and Tastes
Today was a perfect blend of adrenaline-pumping adventure and authentic culinary experiences, showcasing the best of what Alta Badia has to offer. It's days like these that remind me why I embarked on this solo journey – to immerse myself in new experiences and connect with the heart of a place.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Maso Alfarëi Hof, a charming farmhouse restaurant nestled in the Dolomites. The aroma of freshly baked bread and local cheeses filled the air as I stepped inside. The restaurant is housed in an ancient building, possibly dating back to the 1300s, and is run by a warm, welcoming family. It felt like stepping back in time, a world away from the bustling city life I left behind in Toronto. I savored every bite of the traditional Ladin dishes, each one a testament to the region's rich culinary heritage. The preset five-course meal was a delightful journey through local flavors, starting with speck and ricotta, followed by a comforting barley soup with spinach fritters, and then ravioli in cheese and butter. The goulash with polenta and knodel was hearty and satisfying, and the apple fritters provided a sweet ending to a memorable breakfast. I even indulged in a complimentary grappa, brewed right on the premises. Leaving Maso Alfarëi Hof, I felt energized and ready for the day's adventures.

With breakfast settling nicely, I made my way to Adventure Park Calfosch, eager to test my limits among the treetops. The park is located near Colfosco, and the walk there was a treat in itself, with stunning views of the surrounding Dolomites. As a software developer, I spend most of my days indoors, so the opportunity to be surrounded by nature and engage in physical activity was incredibly appealing. The crisp mountain air and the vibrant colors of the autumn foliage made the experience even more invigorating.
Arriving at the Adventure Park, I was immediately impressed by the variety of courses available, catering to all ages and skill levels. After a thorough safety briefing and gearing up with a helmet and harness, I decided to start with one of the intermediate courses. Navigating the treetop obstacles was both challenging and exhilarating. Zip lines soared over the forest floor, providing an adrenaline rush that made me feel like a kid again. The park is committed to safety, which allowed me to fully enjoy the experience without any worries.

The mountains are calling and I must go. - John Muir
After conquering the Adventure Park, I felt a sense of accomplishment and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of the Dolomites. It was time to explore another facet of Alta Badia: its stunning peaks. I set off towards Para Dai Giai, a peak offering panoramic views that I had read so much about.
The hike to Para Dai Giai began from the Gardenacia refuge, accessible via a scenic chairlift from La Villa. The initial part of the trail was relatively easy, winding through lush forests and past charming alpine huts. As I ascended, the landscape transformed into rocky terrain, with glimpses of the towering Para Dai Giai peak in the distance. The final stretch of the hike involved navigating a narrow ledge and a short, assisted climb to reach the summit. Although it required a bit of courage and a steady foot, the reward was well worth the effort.
Standing atop Para Dai Giai, I was greeted by breathtaking views of the surrounding Dolomites. The autumn colors painted the landscape in hues of gold, red, and brown, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. I could see the Sassongher, Marmolada and the Puez-Odle range. I spent a few moments simply soaking in the scenery, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such natural wonders.

As the day drew to a close, my thoughts drifted to Aishath and Ibrahim back in Toronto. I imagined telling them stories of my adventures, describing the stunning landscapes and the delicious food. I knew they would have loved the Adventure Park and the breathtaking views from Para Dai Giai.
With a satisfying hike behind me, it was time to indulge in another culinary experience. For lunch, I headed to Steakhouse L’Fanà Food & Wine in La Villa. The restaurant is known for its grilled meat specialties and its cozy, romantic atmosphere. As I stepped inside, I was greeted by the aroma of sizzling steaks and the warm, inviting ambiance. The staff was friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home. I decided to try the entrecote, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The wine list was extensive, featuring excellent Italian brands that complemented the meal perfectly. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of outdoor activities.

For dinner, I chose Berghotel Ladinia, a restaurant with a long history and a reputation for traditional Ladin cuisine with a modern twist. The Berghotel Ladinia has been active as a guesthouse since 1930 and has a vintage alpine-style ambiance. The restaurant's warm and cozy atmosphere made it the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. I savored the traditional dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, each bite a celebration of the region's culinary heritage. The staff was attentive and friendly, providing excellent service and making me feel welcome. The wine list featured a selection of local wineries, offering authentic oenological gems that perfectly complemented the meal.

To cap off the evening, I decided to visit Iceberg Bar Restaurant Lounge for a drink. The lounge is known for its creative cocktails and its vibrant atmosphere. The bar’s decor, with its icy tones and Russian granite counter, created a young and sparkling atmosphere. I sipped on a trendy cocktail while enjoying the music and the lively ambiance. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and culinary delights.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy sunscreen tomorrow. I can't believe I forgot to pack it! It's a must-have for any outdoor adventure, especially in the mountains. I also thought about the power adapter I forgot. Luckily, the hotel had one I could borrow, but it's a good reminder to always double-check my packing list.
