Unveiling Alta Badia's Charms

Today was a day of exploration and immersion into the heart of Alta Badia. From historical villas to the stunning natural landscapes, every moment was a discovery. It's days like these that remind me why I set out on this solo adventure in the first place – to truly connect with a place and its people.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Rifugio Col Pradat. Perched high up, the views were absolutely breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the surrounding Dolomites. The crisp mountain air and the aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee was the perfect start to the day. I fueled up with some local cheese and speck, a traditional cured meat, while planning my itinerary for the day. I made a mental note to bring Aishath and Ibrahim here someday; they would love the views. The friendly staff made me feel right at home, sharing stories about the region and offering tips on the best hiking trails. I was also impressed that the restaurant prepares meals fresh, right in front of you.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I set off to explore the Alta Badia villa. Nestled in the heart of the Dolomites, La Villa, also known as La Ila or Stern, stands at an elevation of 1,433 meters. Surrounded by the natural parks of Puez-Odle and Fanes-Senes-Braies, the beauty of the Dolomites is all around. The core of the village features Ciastel Colz and the parish church, constructed in 1516 and dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. As I wandered through the village, I was struck by the blend of traditional architecture and modern amenities. The charm of the village is undeniable, with every corner offering a picture-postcard view.

Next on the agenda was a visit to the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park. This park is a sprawling expanse of natural beauty, encompassing diverse landscapes from lush alpine meadows to rugged peaks and serene mountain lakes. Established in 1980, the park covers 25,453 hectares and includes areas of Badia, Braies, Dobbiaco, Valdaora, La Val, and San Vigilio di Marebbe. As I ventured deeper into the park, the sheer scale of the place was awe-inspiring. The air was filled with the scent of pine and wildflowers, and the only sounds were the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant call of birds. I made sure to bring my camera to capture the beauty.

The mountains are calling and I must go.

I spent hours hiking through the park, marveling at the unique flora and fauna. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including golden eagles, ibexes, marmots, and chamoises. Although I didn't spot any of the larger animals, I did see several colorful birds and countless wildflowers. The area above 2,000 meters is home to mountain hares and snow grouses, as well as edelweiss, dragonmouth, and Dolomite yarrow.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park is the phenomenon of karstification. This geological process, which occurs almost exclusively in easily soluble limestone, has shaped the landscape in remarkable ways. The carbonic acid dissolved in water has corroded and dissolved much of the Jurassic limestone, creating unique formations and features throughout the park.

As evening approached, I made my way to La Sieia - Restaurant Pizzeria Lounge Bar for a late lunch. This place is a gem. La Sieia means the sawmill in Ladin, and the restaurant is housed in a renovated carpentry workshop, blending modern elegance with Alpine charm. I opted for a pizza, made with ingredients sourced directly from their farm, Lüch da Pćëi. The pizza was delicious, and the ambiance was cozy and inviting. I learned that the restaurant is designed according to the principles of Emotional Design, incorporating the four elements of Feng Shui: fire, earth, metal, and wood.

For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a gourmet experience at Gourmet Hotel Gran Ander. This hotel and restaurant has been run by the Irsara family for generations, and their passion for gastronomy is evident in every dish. The restaurant is mentioned in both the Gambero Rosso and Michelin Guides, which speaks to the quality of the food. The milk, fruits, mushrooms, and meat all come from the surrounding mountains. The chef, Andrea Irsara, uses local and fresh ingredients to prepare dishes from old family recipes. I chose a traditional Ladin dish, and it was an explosion of flavors. The hotel also offers a wellness center with a sauna, hot tub, and Turkish bath, but I was too tired from my day of hiking to take advantage of those amenities.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to Toccami Wine-Bar Cocktail-Lounge. Located by Hotel Marmolada, this wine bar and cocktail lounge is open to the public. I sampled some local wines, carefully selected by the expert sommelier, Iwan Costamoling. The atmosphere was lively, and I enjoyed chatting with other travelers and locals. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of exploring. I made sure to try one of their craft cocktails, mixed with care and expertise.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the incredible diversity of experiences that Alta Badia has to offer. From the historical charm of La Villa to the natural beauty of Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park, there is something for everyone here. The warmth and hospitality of the locals have made me feel incredibly welcome, and I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this stunning region. As I prepare for another day of adventure, I am filled with anticipation for what tomorrow will bring.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Lärchenweg and take in the views from the Viewpoint. I'm also looking forward to breakfast at Glam's Alta Badia, lunch at Ristorante Porcino, and dinner at Piz Boè Alpine Lounge. And, of course, I'll be stopping by Tito Speck - Il Maso dello Speck to pick up some local delicacies to bring back home to Aishath and Ibrahim. It's these little moments of connection that make my travels so special, and I can't wait to share the flavors of Alta Badia with my family.

Alta Badia continues to surprise and delight me. The blend of culture, nature, and gastronomy is truly unique, and I am so grateful to be able to experience it all. As I drift off to sleep, I am filled with a sense of peace and contentment, knowing that I am exactly where I am meant to be.
