Day 5: A Day of Culture and Ancient Giants in Yakushima
Immerse yourself in Yakushima's history and marvel at the ancient Sarukawa banyan tree. A day of cultural discovery and natural wonder.
Exploring Yakushima's Past and Present
Today was a day of contrasts, delving into the rich history and vibrant culture of Yakushima before standing in awe of one of nature's most impressive creations. From exploring ancient artifacts to wandering through a living, breathing tapestry of roots and branches, it was a day that truly highlighted the diverse beauty of this island.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Michikusa. Fuelled up, I set out to immerse myself in local history at the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore. The museum is conveniently located in Miyanoura, a short 15-minute drive from the airport. It was fascinating to see exhibits showcasing the lives of the islanders throughout history. From farming tools to fishing boats used for catching flying fish, each artifact told a story of resilience and adaptation.

I learned about the methods used to cut down the massive Yakusugi cedar trees and the techniques for long-line fishing. The museum provided a comprehensive look at the island's past, highlighting the deep connection between the people and their environment. It's one of those places that gives you a richer understanding of the area you're visiting, beyond just the scenic spots. The exhibits are primarily in Japanese, but thankfully, they offer laminated sheets in English, which made navigating the museum much easier. I spent a good couple of hours here, soaking in the information and gaining a newfound appreciation for the island's heritage.
After the museum, I was ready for some lunch. I headed over to Wakadaisho, a local spot known for its delicious seafood. The meal was simple but incredibly fresh, a testament to the island's abundant marine resources. I enjoyed a set meal with grilled fish, rice, and miso soup, a comforting and satisfying combination that perfectly captured the local flavors.

With a full stomach and a mind buzzing with historical insights, I made my way to the Sarukawa banyan tree. The banyan tree is located a short walk from a parking lot. As I ventured along the jungle path, I was immediately enveloped by the thick, subtropical vegetation. The air was heavy with humidity, and the sounds of unseen creatures echoed through the dense foliage. It felt like stepping into another world, a realm where nature reigned supreme.

And then, I saw it. The Sarukawa banyan tree. Or rather, the forest of banyan trees, as it's nearly impossible to tell where one tree ends and another begins. The trees are over a century old. Their aerial roots, thick and rope-like, stretched down from the branches, creating a tangled web that seemed to defy gravity. It was an awe-inspiring sight, a testament to the power and resilience of nature.
I spent a long time wandering through the banyan forest, marveling at the intricate network of roots and branches. The afternoon sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting an ethereal glow on the scene. It was a truly magical experience, one that awakened my senses and filled me with a profound sense of wonder.
Nature's grandeur is not just in the sweeping landscapes, but in the intricate details of a single tree.
The Sarukawa banyan tree is more than just a tree; it's an ecosystem, a living sculpture, a symbol of the interconnectedness of life. It's a place where you can feel the pulse of the island, the energy of the earth, the whisper of the wind. I highly recommend a visit to anyone traveling to Yakushima, just remember to wear proper hiking shoes and long trousers as the area can be quite rugged.
Before heading back, I decided to treat myself to some gelato at Yakushima Gelato Sora-Umi. After a day of exploring, the cool, creamy treat was the perfect way to recharge. I opted for a scoop of local fruit flavor, which was both refreshing and delicious.

For dinner, I decided to try Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan. It was a great place to sample local products and enjoy a casual meal. The market had a wide variety of options, from fresh seafood to locally grown vegetables. I ended up trying a traditional Yakushima dish, which was both hearty and flavorful.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Yakushima. It's a place that nourishes the soul and inspires the mind. I am also grateful that the weather held up nicely, with daytime highs near 26°C, and cooler nights with temperatures around 23°C.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to visit the Kigensugi Cedar and Senpiro Falls. I plan to start my day with breakfast at At Pesca, followed by a hike to see the ancient cedar tree. In the afternoon, I'll head to Senpiro Falls to witness the cascading water and stunning views. And to cap off the day, I might just swing by Ambar for a relaxing evening drink. Another day of natural wonders awaits, and I can't wait to see what Yakushima has in store for me.
I’m especially grateful for the flexibility of not having a fixed hotel booking. It allowed me to explore at my own pace and discover hidden gems like the quiet spot near the Sarukawa banyan tree. I did, however, make a mental note to buy some insect repellent tomorrow. I seemed to have forgotten it, and the little critters were having a field day! Also, I need to remember to stock up on snacks for the hike tomorrow.
Yakushima continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. It’s a place where history, culture, and nature intertwine to create an unforgettable experience. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to share this journey with you all. Stay tuned for more adventures from this enchanting island.
