Solo Adventure in the Lush Forests of Yakushima
Day 6: Chasing Waterfalls and Ancient Cedars: A Day of Awe in Yakushima
Immerse yourself in Yakushima's natural wonders: majestic waterfalls, ancient cedars, and culinary delights on a solo adventure.
Whispers of the Ancients, Echoes of Waterfalls
Today was a symphony of nature's grandeur, a day where the ancient met the vibrant, and the serene embraced the spectacular. Yakushima continues to unveil its treasures, leaving me humbled and utterly captivated. It was a day of exploration that fed my soul and deepened my appreciation for the delicate balance of our planet.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at At Pesca(アット ペスカ). The simple meal of toast and coffee was the perfect fuel for the adventures that awaited. I find that starting the day with a good meal sets the tone for exploration, and Pesca provided just that calm, grounding start.
My first stop was the Kigensugi Cedar. Driving up the mountain, I was struck by the changing landscape. The air grew cooler, and the vegetation became denser, a clear sign that I was entering a realm of ancient giants. Reaching Kigensugi, I was immediately awestruck. Standing at an altitude of 1,230 meters, this 3,000-year-old cedar is a testament to the resilience and enduring spirit of nature.

What's particularly fascinating about Kigensugi is that it's the only Yakusugi cedar accessible by car. This makes it a popular spot, but it doesn't diminish the sense of wonder it inspires. The tree is adorned with various epiphytes, including Yakushima rhododendrons and Japanese rowans, adding to its unique character. The head of the cedar is dead, yet it exudes an undeniable sense of vitality. It was a humbling experience to stand in the presence of such an ancient being, imagining the countless seasons it has weathered, the stories it could tell.
The forest is not a resource to be exploited but a sacred place to be revered.
Leaving Kigensugi, I drove towards Senpiro Falls. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through lush landscapes and offering glimpses of the island's rugged beauty. As I approached the falls, I could hear the distant roar of water, a tantalizing prelude to the spectacle that awaited. The falls are easily accessible from the main road, with a short walk from the parking area to the viewing point.

Senpiro Falls is a sight to behold. The water cascades down a 60-meter granite rock face, creating a mesmerizing display of power and grace. The granite rock itself is immense, said to be the size of a thousand rice fields – hence the name 'Senpiro'. The surrounding forest is lush and vibrant, with ancient cedar trees adding to the scene's primeval beauty. The falls are especially impressive after a rainfall, when the increased water volume amplifies their power. I spent a long time simply watching the water, feeling the cool mist on my face, and absorbing the tranquility of the surroundings.
For lunch, I decided to try the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. It was a delightful experience, surrounded by local art and enjoying a meal that celebrated the island's culinary heritage. It was a chance to pause, reflect, and savor the flavors of Yakushima.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to a heavenly kitchen for dinner. This small, plant-based restaurant is a hidden gem, offering a unique dining experience in an intimate setting. With only one table in the owner's house, it felt like being welcomed into a private home. The meal was a series of set menus that includes sushi and mindfulness eating set accompanied by lyre music. The food was not only delicious but also beautifully presented, showcasing the vibrant colors and flavors of local fruits and vegetables. It was a perfect end to a day that had been all about connecting with nature and appreciating the simple things in life. 'A heavenly kitchen' is more than just a restaurant; it's an experience that nourishes both body and soul.

Finally, I ended my day at Ambar, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere and dart games. While I'm not much of a dart player myself, I enjoyed soaking in the local culture, chatting with fellow travelers, and savoring a well-deserved drink. It was a fun, relaxed way to wind down after a day of exploration. The friendly atmosphere of Ambar made me feel like I was part of the community, sharing stories and laughter with new friends.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse and the East China Sea Observatory. It will be another day of discovery, offering new perspectives on this incredible island. I also plan to visit Pukaridō, a local shop, to pick up some souvenirs and support the local economy. Each day here brings new adventures, and I'm eager to see what tomorrow holds.
As I reflect on today, I’m reminded of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the beauty around us. In our busy lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, forgetting to connect with nature and ourselves. Yakushima is a place that forces you to slow down, to breathe, and to truly see the world in all its wonder. It's a lesson I'll carry with me long after I leave this enchanting island.
Yakushima has a unique charm, a blend of ancient forests, cascading waterfalls, and warm hospitality. It's a place where you can lose yourself in nature and find yourself in the process. As I prepare for another day of exploration, I'm filled with gratitude for this incredible journey and the opportunity to share it with you all.
