A Botanical Journey and Evening Calmness
Today was a day of immersing myself in the natural beauty and local flavors of Yakushima. It was a slower-paced day compared to some of the intense hiking I’ve done, but it was exactly what I needed to recharge before my final day on this incredible island. I was looking forward to a relaxed exploration of gardens and a taste of Yakushima's culinary offerings.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It's always interesting to see what's on offer at airport restaurants; this one had a surprisingly good selection of local dishes. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. It was a satisfying start to the day, fueling me up for my garden explorations.
First on the agenda was a visit to the Botanic Gardens. As someone who appreciates the tranquility and beauty of nature, I was eager to see the unique flora of Yakushima. The gardens were a serene escape, filled with a diverse collection of plants and flowers. I spent a couple of hours wandering through the well-maintained paths, admiring the vibrant colors and fragrant scents. It reminded me a bit of the botanical gardens back in Toronto, but with a distinct Japanese touch. The Yakushima rhododendron was particularly stunning, a true highlight of the garden.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
Next, I headed to the Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato”. This place was a delight! It wasn't just a garden; it was an experience. I was greeted by a friendly local who gave a tour of the grounds, showcasing a variety of tropical fruits. Although there was a slight language barrier, his enthusiasm and passion for the fruits were evident. I learned about the cultivation of bananas, mangoes, papayas, and guavas, and even got to sample some fresh-picked fruits. The sweet and tangy flavors were a treat to the taste buds, a refreshing contrast to the savory breakfast I had earlier.

For lunch, I decided to try the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. The restaurant had a charming atmosphere, with local artwork adorning the walls. The menu featured a variety of dishes made with local ingredients. I ordered a pork belly dish that came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The pork was tender and flavorful, perfectly complemented by the accompanying vegetables. It was a delightful culinary experience that gave me a true taste of Yakushima.

As the day wound down, I made my way to scale スケール(サップ&バー) for a relaxing evening. This bar is known for its SUP (stand-up paddleboarding) activities during the day, but it transforms into a cozy spot in the evening. I enjoyed a couple of local craft beers while watching the sunset over the ocean. The atmosphere was laid-back and welcoming, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

Dinner was at Each Meal, a Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter. The name itself intrigued me, and the experience lived up to the promise. The restaurant offered a unique dining experience, with a menu that changed daily based on the freshest local ingredients. I opted for the chef's recommendation, which was a selection of sashimi and grilled fish. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The chef and staff were incredibly friendly and social, making the experience even more memorable. It truly felt like a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, a perfect end to a fulfilling day.

As I reflect on today, I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and culinary delights of Yakushima. It was a day of simple pleasures, of slowing down and appreciating the small moments. The gardens were a tranquil escape, the fruits were a burst of flavor, and the restaurants were a culinary adventure. It was a day that nourished both my body and soul.
Tomorrow marks my final day in Yakushima, and I plan to make the most of it. My itinerary includes a visit to the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center, where I hope to learn more about the island's unique ecosystem and cultural heritage. I also plan to explore the World Heritage Listed Coastal Road with Wildlife, hoping to catch a glimpse of some of Yakushima's famous wildlife. I'll be having breakfast at Aqua Cafe, lunch at Kamogawa Restaurant, and a farewell dinner at Wakadaisho. Before heading to the airport, I'll make a stop at YAKUSHIMA BLESS to pick up some souvenirs for Aishath and Ibrahim. It's hard to believe my solo adventure is coming to an end, but I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings.
This trip has been a wonderful opportunity for reflection and rejuvenation, a chance to reconnect with nature and myself. As I prepare to leave Yakushima, I carry with me a deep appreciation for its beauty and a renewed sense of peace. I am already looking forward to sharing my experiences with Aishath and Ibrahim and perhaps even planning a return trip with them in the future. The memories and photographs I’ve captured here will undoubtedly inspire my work and my perspective on life back in Toronto. For now, I am content with the experiences I have had and the lessons I have learned on this enchanting island.
I'm also feeling thankful that I decided to come alone to Yakushima. It's been a good opportunity to get to know myself better, and I'm excited to bring that back to my family.
I'm looking forward to seeing Ibrahim soon and maybe teaching him chess. I think he'd really enjoy it and it would be a good way for us to bond.
Until tomorrow,
Mohamed
