West Side Stories: Lighthouses, Observatories, and Culinary Delights
Today was all about embracing the western side of Yakushima, a part of the island that promised stunning coastal views and a taste of local life. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and delicious discoveries, perfectly aligning with my desire to connect with nature and capture the essence of this unique island.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It’s funny, I usually try to avoid airport food, but this place had a certain charm. Maybe it was the anticipation of the day ahead, or perhaps the simple joy of a familiar Japanese breakfast, but it was a great way to start the morning. I grabbed a quick bite - nothing fancy, just a traditional set with grilled fish, rice, and miso soup. It was surprisingly satisfying, and the strong coffee fueled me up for the adventures ahead.

My first stop was the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. Driving there, the roads narrowed, winding through lush greenery that occasionally opened up to breathtaking ocean views. The lighthouse itself is a simple, elegant structure, standing sentinel against the vast expanse of the East China Sea. Though I couldn't go inside, the views from the surrounding area were incredible. I could see the distant outlines of other islands and the rugged coastline of Yakushima stretching out before me. The sea breeze was invigorating, and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore was incredibly soothing.

The journey is the destination, especially when it involves breathtaking views and unexpected culinary gems.
After soaking in the lighthouse views, I headed to the East China Sea Observatory. This spot offered a different perspective, a panoramic vista of the sea and the island’s interior. The observatory itself is unassuming, but the view is anything but. I spent a good while there, just watching the waves and the clouds, feeling a sense of peace and connection with the natural world. It's amazing how calming the vastness of the ocean can be.

For lunch, I ventured to Iso no Kaori, a local restaurant in the Anbo area known for its seafood. It was a bit of a drive, but the promise of fresh, local flavors was too tempting to resist. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly, even with my limited Japanese. I decided to try their sashimi set, featuring a variety of locally caught fish. Each piece was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a true taste of the ocean. I also ordered the deep-fried flying fish, a Yakushima specialty, which was crispy and delicious. It was a delightful culinary experience, and I left feeling satisfied and energized.

In the afternoon, I decided to do some souvenir shopping. I stopped by Pukaridō, a charming little shop near the airport. It was filled with local crafts, snacks, and other unique items. I picked up a few small gifts for Aishath and Ibrahim, wanting to bring a piece of Yakushima back home to them. I also couldn't resist buying some Yakushima ginger syrup for myself, remembering how much we enjoy ginger tea back in Toronto.

For dinner, I chose Panorama, a restaurant in Miyanoura known for its diverse menu and relaxed atmosphere. I was in the mood for something a little different, and Panorama seemed like the perfect choice. The restaurant had a modern, stylish interior, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. I ordered a rice bowl with tofu, avocado, and seaweed, a simple but satisfying vegan option. It was a great way to end the day, enjoying a delicious meal in a pleasant setting.

As I reflect on the day, I am struck by the beauty and tranquility of Yakushima. The island has a way of slowing you down, of encouraging you to appreciate the simple things in life. The coastal views were stunning, the local food was delicious, and the overall atmosphere was incredibly relaxing. It was a day well spent, and I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique corner of the world.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the botanical gardens and the Yakushima Fruit Garden, eager to discover more of the island's natural beauty. I might even check out that bar, scale スケール(サップ&バー), for a nightcap, if I'm feeling adventurous. Until then, I'll rest and recharge, ready for another day of exploration and discovery.
Yakushima continues to surprise and delight me. It is a place where nature reigns supreme, where the pace of life is slow and deliberate, and where the simple things are truly appreciated. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique island, and I look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you.
The fresh air, the sound of the waves, the taste of the local cuisine – it all combines to create an unforgettable experience. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, why I love to explore, and why I love to share my experiences with others. Yakushima, you have captured my heart, and I know that I will carry the memories of this journey with me for a lifetime.
