A Day of Serenity and Surprise

Today in Mopti, Mali, was a blend of the unexpected and the serene. From encountering ancient reptiles to finding tranquility in a community garden, and indulging in the local flavors, it was a day that truly immersed us in the heart of this unique region. Each experience offered a new perspective, adding depth to our understanding and appreciation of Malian culture.

Our day began early, with a hearty breakfast at Yeredeme. This wasn't just any meal; it was an immersion into local flavors, prepared with care and tradition. I learned that Yeredeme is more than just a restaurant; it's a culinary experience that captures the essence of Malian hospitality. The kids were particularly thrilled with the beignets, a sweet start to what promised to be an adventurous day. Knowing that the restaurant supports local women made the meal even more meaningful.

Fueled and ready, our first stop was the Mare sacrée aux crocodiles, or the sacred crocodile pond. I must admit, I was a bit apprehensive. Crocodiles have always seemed like creatures of nightmares, but this experience was surprisingly peaceful. The pond is considered sacred by the local community, and the crocodiles are treated with reverence.

As we approached, we were greeted by a local guide who explained the history and significance of the pond. He told us stories of how the crocodiles are believed to be protectors of the village and how offerings are made to ensure their well-being. Aminata and Ibrahim were wide-eyed as they watched the crocodiles basking in the sun, their massive bodies still and silent. It was a far cry from the terrifying images I had in my mind. Seeing these ancient reptiles in their natural habitat, coexisting peacefully with the community, was a humbling experience.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the most unexpected places.

After the crocodile pond, we sought out the Ali Tchokari Peace Corps Garden Project. It was a welcome change of pace, a tranquil oasis amidst the bustling city. This garden, supported by the Peace Corps, is a testament to community collaboration and sustainable development.

We met with some of the local volunteers who shared their stories and experiences with us. They spoke passionately about their work in promoting food security, environmental conservation, and community empowerment.

Fatoumata was particularly interested in the gardening techniques they were using, as she's always had a green thumb. Aminata and Ibrahim enjoyed exploring the garden, discovering new plants and insects. It was inspiring to see how a simple garden could bring so much joy and purpose to the community. The Peace Corps volunteers emphasized the importance of working hand-in-hand with the local people, respecting their traditions and knowledge. It was a powerful reminder of the impact that individuals can have when they dedicate themselves to serving others.

For lunch, we stopped at Zeina café in Sevare. This charming spot offered a mix of traditional and international dishes, catering to everyone's tastes.

I opted for the grilled fish, a local favorite, while Fatoumata enjoyed a flavorful stew. The kids were happy with their simpler choices, and the friendly staff made us feel right at home. I learned that Zeina Café is known for its commitment to using locally sourced ingredients and supporting local farmers, which I found admirable.

In the afternoon, we ventured to Venise Center, a local shop known for its artisanal crafts.

I was hoping to find some unique souvenirs to bring back home, something that would capture the essence of our time in Mopti. The shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted items, from intricate wood carvings to colorful textiles. Fatoumata was drawn to the vibrant fabrics, while Aminata and Ibrahim were fascinated by the beaded jewelry. I ended up purchasing a beautiful handwoven blanket, a reminder of the warmth and hospitality we had experienced in Mopti.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant Sigui Mopti for dinner.

This restaurant is renowned for its authentic Malian cuisine, and I was eager to try some of the local specialties. The atmosphere was lively and inviting, with traditional music playing in the background. I ordered the capitaine a la Bamakoise, a flavorful fish dish, while Fatoumata chose a hearty stew. The kids were adventurous, trying new flavors and spices. The meal was a culinary journey, a celebration of Mali's rich gastronomic heritage.

Looking back on the day, I am struck by the diversity of experiences we had. From the ancient crocodiles to the vibrant garden, from the bustling market to the delicious cuisine, Mopti has revealed itself to be a city of contrasts and surprises. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, to expose them to new cultures and perspectives. As we prepare for tomorrow's adventures, I am filled with anticipation for what awaits us.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Iréli Niéné and Diabi. I’ve heard Iréli Niéné is a must-see, known for its unique cultural significance, and Diabi offers serene gardens perfect for relaxation. We'll start our day with breakfast at Restaurant Bar Bozo , followed by lunch at Restaurant Damou. In the evening, we might check out Venise Night Club for a taste of Mopti's nightlife, but that depends on how tired the little ones are!

Before drifting off to sleep, I took a moment to reflect on the day. I am reminded of why I started this travel blog in the first place: to document our family's adventures and to connect with others who share our love for travel and cultural exploration. As a software developer, I spend most of my days in front of a computer screen, but these trips allow me to reconnect with the world and with my Malian heritage. I hope that our experiences can inspire others to step outside their comfort zones and embrace the unknown. After all, as we discovered today, sometimes the greatest adventures are found in the most unexpected places.
