A Day of Discoveries in Sévaré

Today was a day of exploration and relaxation in Sévaré, a town that serves as a crossroads in Mali. After several days of intense travel and cultural immersion, it felt good to slow down and appreciate the simple joys of life here. We embraced the local rhythm, discovering hidden gems and creating lasting memories with Fatoumata and the kids.

Our day began with breakfast at Zeina café Mopti. It's a local favorite, and I could immediately see why. The café was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to start their day with a good meal. Fatoumata ordered her usual thé au lait, while I opted for a strong coffee to kickstart my morning. Aminata and Ibrahim were excited about the fresh bread and jam, a familiar comfort that helped them feel at home even in this new environment.

After breakfast, we decided to visit ZONE VERGER SEVARE. The area was alive with vendors selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. The colors were vibrant, and the air was filled with the sounds of bartering and laughter. Aminata was fascinated by the intricate patterns on the fabrics, while Ibrahim was more interested in the various fruits he had never seen before. I bought some mangoes and bananas, knowing they would make a healthy snack later in the day. Fatoumata, ever the negotiator, managed to get a good price on a beautiful piece of batik fabric, which she plans to use for a new dress.

Next on our itinerary was the Mali National Park. Although technically in Bamako and a bit of a drive from Sévaré, we decided it would be worth the trip for a change of scenery and a bit of nature. The park was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. We strolled along the well-maintained paths, enjoying the shade of the tall trees. Aminata and Ibrahim were thrilled to spot various birds and small animals, their eyes wide with wonder. I took the opportunity to practice my photography, capturing the natural beauty around us. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving these green spaces, even in urban environments.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of everyday life.

For lunch, we chose Restaurant Damou. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of local dishes. We ordered a selection of items to share, including grilled fish, spicy stews, and fresh salads. The food was delicious, each dish bursting with flavor and reflecting the culinary traditions of Mali. The kids particularly enjoyed the grilled fish, while Fatoumata and I savored the complex spices in the stews.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to relax and unwind at Chez Lili. It was a great way to experience the local nightlife in a family-friendly setting. The atmosphere was lively but relaxed, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the music. I enjoyed a local beer while Fatoumata sipped on a refreshing juice. Aminata and Ibrahim were content with their sodas, watching the people and soaking in the atmosphere. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploration, a moment of simple pleasure and connection.

For dinner, we decided to try Restaurant Baramuso. The restaurant had been recommended to us by several locals, who raved about its authentic Malian cuisine. We were not disappointed. The dishes were expertly prepared, showcasing the diverse flavors and ingredients of the region. I tried the local specialty, a hearty stew made with peanut sauce and vegetables, while Fatoumata opted for grilled meat with rice. The kids, always a bit more cautious with new foods, enjoyed simpler dishes like chicken and potatoes. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it a perfect setting for a family dinner.

Reflecting on the day, I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the simple joys of life in Sévaré. It's easy to get caught up in the grand sights and historical landmarks, but sometimes the most meaningful experiences are found in the everyday moments. Whether it was the vibrant colors of the market, the peacefulness of the park, or the delicious flavors of the local cuisine, today was a reminder of the beauty and richness of Malian culture.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit the Mare sacrée aux crocodiles and the Ali Tchokari Peace Corps Garden Project. I am excited to see the sacred crocodiles and learn more about the local efforts to promote peace and sustainability. It promises to be another day of discovery and adventure, and I can't wait to share it with my family and with you, my readers.

As I write this, I am reminded of how far we've come and how much we've experienced in just a few days. Leaving my familiar life as a software developer in Montreal to immerse myself in the heart of Mali has been transformative. Sharing this journey with Fatoumata, Aminata, and Ibrahim makes it all the more special. It's moments like these that reinforce the importance of family, culture, and exploration. And although I miss my routine and the comforts of home, I know that these experiences will stay with me long after we've returned to Montreal.

The warmth of the Malian people, the vibrant culture, and the unique landscapes have captured my heart. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings and to continue sharing our adventures with you. Until then, good night from Sévaré.

Even though we are far from home, I feel a sense of belonging here, a connection to the land and its people. Perhaps it's because Mali is my birthplace, a place that holds a special significance in my heart. Or maybe it's simply the universal human desire to connect with others and to find meaning in our experiences. Whatever the reason, I am grateful for this journey and for the opportunity to share it with my family.

And as the day comes to an end, I am reminded of a quote by Ibn Battuta, a famous Moroccan scholar and explorer:

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.

Indeed, this journey has left me speechless at times, but it has also inspired me to become a storyteller, to share the beauty and richness of Mali with the world.

I am particularly proud of how Aminata and Ibrahim have adapted to this new environment. They have embraced the local culture, learned a few words of Bambara, and made friends with the local children. It's heartwarming to see them connecting with their heritage and developing a sense of global citizenship. Fatoumata has been an incredible support, navigating the local customs and ensuring that we are respectful of the Malian traditions. Her knowledge of the culture and language has been invaluable, and I am grateful to have her by my side.

As we prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement. I know that there are many more adventures to come, and I can't wait to share them with you. So stay tuned, and join us as we continue to discover the hidden gems of Mali.

Before I close for the night, I must share a funny anecdote from our day. While we were at the Mali National Park, Ibrahim, in his boundless curiosity, tried to befriend a monkey. He offered it a piece of his banana, but the monkey, unimpressed, snatched the entire banana from his hand and scampered up a tree. Ibrahim, initially disappointed, burst into laughter, and soon we were all laughing along with him. It was a reminder to not take ourselves too seriously and to find joy in the unexpected moments of life.

Sévaré is more than just a crossroads town; it's a place where cultures meet, where traditions are preserved, and where the spirit of Mali shines brightly. It's a place that has captured my heart, and I know it will stay with me long after we've left. And as we continue our journey, I am reminded of the importance of travel, not just to see new places, but to open our minds, broaden our perspectives, and connect with people from different backgrounds. It's through these experiences that we grow as individuals and as a family.

So, as the sun sets over Sévaré, I bid you good night and look forward to sharing more of our Malian adventure with you tomorrow.
