Exploring Bamako's Cultural Heart
Today was all about diving deep into the heart of Malian culture in Bamako. It's one thing to read about a place, but experiencing it firsthand with Fatoumata and the kids, Aminata and Ibrahim, is something else entirely. We embraced the day with open minds and hearts, ready to soak in the sights, sounds, and flavors of this vibrant city. From historical artifacts to contemporary crafts, Bamako offered a rich tapestry of experiences that we'll cherish forever.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at l’aquarium resto. The name itself conjured images of underwater wonders, but what awaited us was even more captivating: a fusion of Lebanese and Armenian flavors that danced on our palates. The kids were particularly fascinated by the mezze, a colorful assortment of small dishes that allowed them to sample a variety of tastes. Fatoumata and I savored the kebbeh, stuffed with fish, and the flavorful sausages with pomegranate sauce. It was a perfect start to a day of exploration.

Fuelled by our delicious breakfast, we headed to the National Museum. As a software developer, I spend most of my days surrounded by technology, but I also have a deep appreciation for history and culture. I wanted to share that with Aminata and Ibrahim. The museum's exhibits offered a fascinating glimpse into Mali's past, from ancient artifacts to traditional clothing and musical instruments. Aminata was captivated by the intricate designs of the textiles, while Ibrahim was drawn to the displays of ritual objects. I was particularly impressed by the concrete replicas of the mosques of Djenné and Timbuktu. They stood as silent witnesses to Mali's rich architectural heritage.

Culture is not just about preserving the past; it's about understanding the present and shaping the future.
We spent hours wandering through the museum's halls, learning about the diverse ethnic groups that call Mali home and the traditions that have shaped their lives. The museum's collection of over 10,000 objects and 40,000 photographs provided a comprehensive overview of Malian history and culture. It was an enriching experience for all of us, and I was grateful for the opportunity to connect with my Malian roots in such a meaningful way. Sadly, we couldn't take photos inside the permanent exhibits, but the memories are etched in our minds.
After immersing ourselves in history, it was time for lunch. We decided to try Fadlfood, a local eatery known for its authentic Malian cuisine. We sampled a variety of dishes, including flavorful stews and grilled meats. The spices were bold and aromatic, and the portions were generous. It was a true taste of Mali, and the kids devoured every bite.

With our bellies full, we ventured into the heart of Bamako's shopping district, in search of the Inaz Concept Store. I had read about this boutique, which showcases the work of local artisans and designers, and I was eager to see it for myself. The store was a treasure trove of unique clothing, accessories, and home goods, all crafted with care and attention to detail. Fatoumata was immediately drawn to the colorful textiles, while Aminata admired the intricate jewelry. Ibrahim, surprisingly, took an interest in the wooden carvings. I was impressed by the way the store blended traditional Malian craftsmanship with modern design. We ended up buying a few souvenirs, including a hand-woven blanket and a set of carved wooden animals for the kids.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Kinshasa Kitchen Bamako. The restaurant was bustling with activity, and the air was filled with the tantalizing aromas of Malian cuisine. We ordered a variety of dishes, including Tiguadege Na (Malian peanut butter stew), and grilled fish. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

Reflecting on our day, I was struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Malian people. Everywhere we went, we were greeted with smiles and open arms. It's a testament to the country's rich cultural heritage and its commitment to preserving its traditions.
I did miss my portable phone charger today! It would have been nice to capture more photos and videos throughout the day without worrying about the battery life. And a rain jacket would have been useful as well, as we experienced a brief but heavy downpour in the afternoon.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore La Dune Rose [see tomorrow's itinerary]. I've heard it's a breathtaking sight, and I'm excited to share it with my family. We'll start the day with breakfast at Mr. K's Burger, followed by lunch at Soukhothai by Siam. In the evening, we'll have dinner at Le 365 and perhaps enjoy a drink at Bla Bla Bar. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery. I am already looking forward to sharing that with you as well!
Today was a reminder that travel is about more than just seeing new places; it's about connecting with different cultures and creating lasting memories with loved ones. As we drove back to our accommodation, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family. Mali is a country of contrasts, but it's also a country of incredible beauty and resilience. I'm proud to be Malian, and I'm excited to continue exploring all that this amazing country has to offer.
