Art and Heights: A Day in Tokushima
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the artistic with the natural, the historical with the modern. I explored the depths of human creativity at the Otsuka Museum of Art and then ascended to the heights of Mount Bizan for panoramic views of Tokushima. It was a day that engaged both mind and spirit, leaving me with a deeper appreciation for the beauty and culture of Shikoku.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Yoronotaki Gomenten. It was a great way to start the day, fueling up for the adventures ahead. The local flavors and cozy atmosphere set a positive tone for what was to come.
Otsuka Museum of Art: A Journey Through Western Art History
My first major stop was the Otsuka Museum of Art. This museum is unlike any other I’ve ever visited. Housing over 1,000 life-size ceramic reproductions of Western masterpieces, it offers an immersive journey through art history, from ancient murals to 20th-century masterpieces.
As I wandered through the museum's vast halls, I was struck by the sheer scale and ambition of the project. The reproductions are incredibly detailed, capturing the essence of the original works. It’s like stepping into the Sistine Chapel without having to travel to the Vatican, or admiring Monet's Water Lilies in a serene outdoor setting.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
The museum is laid out chronologically, starting in the basement with ancient and medieval art, including a full-scale replica of the Sistine Chapel. I spent a considerable amount of time marveling at Michelangelo's frescoes, feeling a sense of awe at the artistic achievement and the sheer scale of the work. Moving upwards, I encountered Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces, including Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. While it’s a reproduction, seeing it in person, at its original size, was still a thrill. The outdoor exhibition of Monet's Water Lilies was particularly impressive, offering a tranquil space to reflect on the beauty of Impressionism.
The museum’s collection spans across different eras and movements, providing a comprehensive overview of Western art history. From the Villa dei Misteri in Pompeii to El Greco's altarpiece, each reproduction is meticulously crafted on ceramic boards, a technique that preserves the colors and shapes for up to 2,000 years. This innovative approach to art preservation is truly remarkable. Knowing that these reproductions can withstand the test of time, unlike the originals, adds a layer of significance to the experience.
Spending hours in the museum, I realized that it was built to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Otsuka Pharmaceutical Company. It is located in Naruto Park, offering beautiful views of the Seto Inland Sea. The setting complements the art, creating a harmonious blend of culture and nature.
Lunch at Ombelico: A Taste of Italy in Tokushima
After immersing myself in art, I was ready for lunch. I headed to Ombelico, an Italian restaurant in Tokushima. As someone who enjoys trying new cuisines, I was eager to see how Italian flavors were interpreted in Japan. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the aroma of freshly baked pizza filled the air. I decided to try one of their pasta dishes, which was delicious. The ingredients were fresh, and the flavors were well-balanced. It was a satisfying meal that provided a perfect break between my morning and afternoon activities.

Ascending Mount Bizan: A Ropeway Journey to Panoramic Views
In the afternoon, I made my way to Mount Bizan, a prominent landmark in Tokushima City. To reach the summit, I took the Bizan Ropeway, a cable car that offers a scenic ride up the mountain. The base of the ropeway is located on the 5th floor of the Awa Odori Kaikan, which made it easy to find. As the cable car ascended, I was treated to stunning views of the city below. The Yoshino River snaked its way through the landscape, and I could see the distant mountains and the Seto Inland Sea.

The ride to the top took about six minutes, a pleasant journey that felt like floating through the sky. At the summit, I found Bizan Park, a well-maintained area with walking paths, gardens, and an observatory. The panoramic views from the observatory were breathtaking. From this vantage point, I could see Awaji Island to the north and the Kii Peninsula to the east. The city of Tokushima lay beneath me, a tapestry of buildings and streets that stretched to the horizon.
There was also a kaleidoscope with LED lights, creating a mesmerizing display. The summit of Mount Bizan is a perfect place to relax and take in the natural beauty of the region. I spent some time simply enjoying the view, feeling a sense of peace and tranquility.
Dinner at Tatsumi: A Culinary Conclusion
For dinner, I chose Tatsumi, a restaurant known for its local cuisine. After a day of art and sightseeing, I was looking forward to a relaxing meal. The restaurant had a welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were friendly. I ordered a selection of dishes, each highlighting the unique flavors of Shikoku. It was a fitting end to a day of exploration, a chance to savor the local culture through its cuisine.

Shopping at AEON MALL Kochi
Before heading back, I decided to do some shopping at AEON MALL Kochi. This large shopping mall has over 150 stores, including fashion boutiques, restaurants, and a supermarket. I was able to find some local products from Kochi, such as sweets and sake. It was a great way to pick up some souvenirs and gifts for my family back in Montreal. The mall was conveniently located near JR Kochi Station, making it easy to access.

As I reflect on today’s experiences, I am struck by the diversity and richness of Shikoku. From the artistic wonders of the Otsuka Museum to the natural beauty of Mount Bizan, this island has so much to offer. Each experience has added a new layer to my understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Shikoku Karst and Kochi Castle, continuing my journey through this fascinating region. I am looking forward to discovering more hidden gems and sharing my experiences with you. I am also contemplating whether I should spend some time at the tone dining bar, which I am told is a great place to unwind after a long day of travel. It will be another day of adventure and discovery, and I can’t wait to see what awaits me.
